That was Rugby League Porn last night, as much as we criticise the Beeb you can't fault them for this, dedicating a channel to the Greatest Game, nice one.



Now is this any sign that Auntie Beeb's move to this great City is having an effect already for RL? Just a though.

Thought the Waring Documentary was very interesting. A very forward thinking RL man in his day, caught up in the Celeb game in later life.

I feel that the dislike of Waring by a lot of RL is a microcosm of RL and its ties to its Socialist roots. Something that still holds sway to this day. A guy who got caught between his love of the game and his own career and always thought he was doing the best for both.

All in all, a great evenings entertainment.

What an evening of the Greatest Game.

It was an enlightening doc re Waring, I certainly didn't know a lot about his background to be honest. Came across as a little bit of a visionary to be fair to him and it did appear that he was doing things for the good of the game in general.

K. Nine was quite superb too. He/she was nippier round the ruck than Alker has been for years



And the 78 final was spectacular viewing. Anyone who says that today's game is better than it was needs to watch this game. There was more invention and off-the-cuff rugby played in that 80 minutes than you see in 10-20 games of SL. Loved the scrummaging and the literally just luzzing the ball somewhere near to the scrum too!!

Was your grandad Ron Tierney then? who was also the match day announcer?

Oh aye. Does anyone remember the little fella who used to stand in the North Stand and smoke a pipe. The amount of smoke that came from his bore was amazing; like a chimney from 1800s.

Yeah, I've seen a few stills of him from that era but never a moving picture. That was rather cool.

I don't think the doc demonstrated convincingly that Waring was instrumental alone in having rugby league on the BBC in those years. It looked to me that the sports producer interviewed really saw RL's value. It did show how important Waring felt the game was (despite his interest in baseball and tractor racing). And I'm sure that Waring didn't want to people to poke fun at the game, but he did, I think, end up as a conduit for ridicule from the rah-rahs and others. He made it easier for them to laugh at the game by laughing at him.

It's sad, but I've probably seen that clip of Don Fox more times than I've seen any other bit of recorded rugby (apart from the cup game where we beat Wigan ten years ago which I have on a well used video). I wish the beeb would leave it alone now.

A smell etched into my earliest memories of watching Salford. Wow, I can remember it now. I also rmember some fella periodically shouting "come on Sollyyyy." Ha. Good times!
