One more hurdle ?
A 'formality' as the original plans had been agreed in principle by the Secretary of State, but there has been a change of Gov and a new secretary of state who prides himself on reigning in local government spending ...

It's Eric Pickles - just tell him that all food concessions will have a wide selection of pies available.

Nobody gives planning permission for huge car parks these days. I'd wager that the site of the proposed retail space (the building in the foreground above) will be used for parking for a good few years though.

Good idea not to do it p1ssed. We could do without a delay in building due to aircraft being drilled into the pre-work.

| I must caution you Salford fans on the timescales so far stated.
All the Mps are on holiday at present and so Mr Pickles wont get off his fat and do anything until he gets back off his MP Jolies after 6th September.
He will probably have a lot on his plate (not food), with a backlog of work from throughout the summer recess, unfortunately he wont get much done then, because the MPs go into the conference season on the 16th September until 11th October.
I therefore think a decision from the Government to approve the plans wont happen until the end of October or November.
Once thats done, Peel and the council will need to go through the tendering process.
As Government/council money is involved, this needs to follow strict procedures, that follow European Union rules regarding competition and fair trade.
This can all take time and grind the tender process into the ground. For example Saints new stadium was approved in 2008 by the Government but tenders only got formerly signed off last month.
I hope for your sake that Peel are more professional and better organised at going through the tender process than Langtree or there agents appeared to be. I suspect they will be, as they are a far bigger organisation.
I think the timescales for the stadium opening for the start of 2012 season are optimistic, as i personally dont think you will see stadium construction start till next summer at the earliest. Thats basing things on Peel being really professional and organised at processing the tenders.
However i will say that the phase 1 development is a pretty basic stadium construction, so it may be possible to knock it up in 8 or 9 months, for example Warringtons ground only took 9 months to build. Hence if work starts by next May then you may be in for the start of 2012.
Otherwise i think 2013 is more realistic.

I thought city council approval was the last stage. Now I've got an awful feeling that after 10 years of blood, sweat, tears and buckets of money, some Tory/Liberal millionaire public school b@stard could kill off the stadium with the stroke of a pen.

The tendering's well under way. Notice was issued in February and shortlisted candidates should have been notified in July.

I think it's misleading to use the Saints tendering process timescale as an example because there were different circumstances involving Tesco and a new store. For whatever reason the developers of the Saints site decided only to start the tendering process some time after detailed planning approval. The tendering process for the new saints stadium would have also involved the Tesco store so it was obviously going to take a lot longer. The tendering process for the Salford stadium started a few months ago and they are already some way down the line with it. I understand that the decision of who will build it is to be announced in October with construction work to start in November.

Surprisingly, Eric Pickles comes from a working class family in Keighley. His family were all members of the Labour Party (when Labour were actually a left wing party) and Mr Pickles had strong communist beliefs as a young fella... Clearly he must've received a bump on the head at this point as he quickly went to the opposite end of the scale as he's now a scare-mongering, fear-fueled, capitalist, power-mad, s0d-the-poor-as-it's-their-fault-for-being-born-into-poverty, tory balloon!
Good morning world!

| This is getting off topic but Pickles joined the tories after the USSR invaded Czechoslovakia. I'm not standing up for the guy but something clearly changed his mind about the difference in the idiology and the reality of communism put in place in Russia at the time.
One thing that stands out for me is that a normal Polish guy Ryszard Siwiec was so upset about the invasion and political landscape that surrounded him. He set fire to himself and died as a protest.
Either that changed his mind or he was offered a well paid job and didn't feel so happy about equality any longer

I think you will find it (the planning app) will go to the secretary of states department who do not
take 3 months holiday and it is parliament that shuts down for the summer not government departments

all interested parties had to declare there interest by 2nd July.
All tenders were due in by 16th Aug in time for the full planning meeting yesterday. I'm confident the successful bidders awarded will be made public soon.

It has local government clearance, it's now down to national government (the ConDems) to pass it finally.
