| I believe a Name change would do nothing but increase the disillusion, Despite what many believe , Salford RLFC is not just a sport for many it's an identity . It's a personal fabric that you wear proudly despite our on field failings. I personally believe I would lose my love for the club if it was rebranded as Manchester , simply because I am a Salfordian who has chosen to support Salford City Reds for nearly all of my life. I have no love or affinity for the name Manchester. I like Manchester as a CITY but for me I wouldn't be happy seeing my clubs 140 year heritage go down the drain, just to try and sound more "attractive" . The only way Salford will be seen as an attractive proposition is by starting afresh NOT in name but in the way it acts, interacts and manages itself . Bring back the family club we once loved, Embrace our history, run with the rebirth of the Devil (which is rightfully our moniker ). Manchester would gain nothing from being associated with until now, a perennial struggler of a RL team, Manchester couldn't even sustain a fairly successful Basketball and Ice hockey team; whom actually would have a huge marketing presence.
Salford as a CITY must have a strong Salford City Reds, The public of Salford deserve a successful sporting team , Civic Pride is the key!

| Quote ="theredshed"That's OK thats what these forums are about. What do you actually define as Salford in your 90%? Central Salford or the entire city that covers 37 square miles? The thing is anyone that answers Manchester is technically right because Salford is in Greater Manchester. Probably what I should have said is if 100 people from Salford were abroad on holiday and asked by someone from say Scotland where are you from?, I think 90% would say Manchester. Although I wouldn't be one of them because I always like to give Salford a plug.
Ask people born in Salford where they were born and that would be a completely different answer.'"
I define the full triangular37 square miles as Salford from Blackfriars to cadishead to Little Hulton, And the people who answer Manchester are indeed technically VERY wrong as Salford isn't in the city of Manchester but in the county of Greater Manchester.

I didn't say Salford was in the city of Manchester, why would anybody think that one city can be in another city? If you read my post I said Salford is in Greater Manchester. 'Greater Manchester' being the 'metropolitan county' and not the city.
Quote ="GT"Lancashire.'"
Lancashire is a non-metropolitan county and Greater Manchester is a metropolitan county.

Greater Manchester was created for administrative purposes. The old county boundaries were never changed.

| Fair enough so TheRedshed's comment regarding people from Salford referring to being from Manchester are indeed technically wrong then.....
It doesn't really bother me which county we belong too however it does bother me when people born in Salford answer to being from Manchester regardless of whether we have a city centre or not.

How can it be wrong for someone born in Greater Manchester to say they are from Manchester? Manchester just being a general answer that is not specific to city or county.
Would it be wrong for people born in Greater London to say they are from London?

Because Greater Manchester is not the same as Manchester. That would mean it would be OK for people from Oldham, Rochdale, Wigan, Bolton and so on to say they're from Manchester. They're not and I doubt they'd ever claim to be.

| What are you lot on about?
It’s a hypothetical situation brought about by a misunderstanding!
We just love to argue about anything on this site and we all need to grow up!
As I can’t see that happening any time soon so I want in.
No one wants it to change to Manchester, but if it did, would people stop going or fall out of love with the club? You’re a fickle lot.
Oh and Lancashire.

| This has been doing the rounds since the mid 90's SL mergers were discussed.
Clubs adoption of brand names - Bulls - Rhino's - Warriors & Reds were in a way to offset dependance on the town name for SL audiences, old fans chant the town name , new fans rattle their merchandise and chant the brand name . The ultimate manifestation of this is American Football teams where teams are moved at will :-for instance Rams - started in Cleveland - then Los Angeles - now St Louis.
~However RL support is extremely parochial , not metropolitan , and a brash name change to the city the other side of the Irwell will only ostracize the faithfull and have little if any impact on attracting new support .
It is the same misnoma that led he club to believe a move to ground visible to a motorway would raise our profile and attract more support #utterb*ll*x
Quote SKY IS THE LIMIT,( D Tarry )The report shows that in real terms the move to a new stadium will enable Salford City Reds to draw from a much wider pool of support and provide Super League with a club that capitalises on a regional, Greater Manchester audience – something which the current location is unable to achieve.
For more than a decade now the club has asserted that in order to make any great advances a new stadium is more of a necessity than a luxury. In Salford City Reds case the club cannot break out of its inner city doldrum without breaking out of the inner city – this stated aim will, without any doubt, now be achieved before the end of 2011.
As I noted in our last submission, it is important to realise that the Sportswise report highlights that we can expect to attract an average of at least 8500 supporters in the first year drawing solely from within the boundaries of the City of Salford which has a population of 220,000 people. This would be a return of just 4% from the club’s traditional target market. When you consider that the population of the Manchester region is in excess of 2.5 million, we need only to attract a little over 0.1% of that extended market to take our crowds beyond 12,500 (and indeed beyond the phase 1 capacity of the City of Salford Community Stadium).'"
[urlhttp://www.sportswise.info/[/url
it's this blind adherence to these BS management consultantants that has led us firstly to a muddy field with diabolical parking , and nearly to it's collapse after another bunch of toffs came up with blindingly obvious statements about the way the club was being led & marketed then argued over the bill.
What a report should have said :-
Put the best team you can out on the pitch
make the club approachable , and affordable
don't buy gob-e Australians who think they're bigger than the club
END
It's normal when things in Salford become Successful & Popular they get labled as Manchester anyway - The Lowry Centre - Media City -
So If Salford become a more successful team ( Define success? [iWin more than you lose , Be a regular Playoff team , get to a final , maybe even win something [/i)
they will automatically become ' Manchesters ' RL team , but just calling ourselves ' Manchester ' is pointless .

| I hope that if and when this so called deal is done, that anybody who as been involved for the past 30years within this club is issed right off.The damage these people have done is unforgiveable. The decline of amateur teams, the kids not playing our sport, the lack of interest in the people of Salford who could`nt care less about how Salford are doing.Moving away from the Willows to some god forsaken smit hole, you could`nt make it up.No plan, players wanting to leave left right and centre, players sueing the club, its a complete uck up.How long its going to take to get this stink removed i don`t know, but it needs a bleeding big broom. And don`t` give me Moon as turned down Leeds to stay here, because?
