| The club said its looking for a big name but as always leave it to Steve simms if this is the case we have no chance getting a decent coach. But I can't see us attracting Ricky Stewart so we are stuck I feel with another average coach and get feeling it will be millword. It is a good dream for Ricky Stewart but that's all. I feel we need to get rid of simms or club is doomed

| Im not convinced Ricky Stuart is the answer and could we afford his wages? I like the idea of recruiting someone who is currently an assistant coach in the NRL. This is a very important decision in the clubs history. We replaced a very good coach (KH) with a very average coach (SM). Now we need another very good coach!

| Worrying. The issue is if we appoint from the British game: with both Messrs Simms and Wilkinson travelling to Australia, the rumour will start that we 've been turned down by our prime hopes and having to settle for second-best ([size=85and the game thinks we are not good enough[/size).

In the newspaper it mentions several applicants from Australia, why would people assume that all those overseas coaches who applied for the job in the first place turned the club down?
This is hypothetical until an announcement is made.

Farcical. If he has applied for the job how can he be turning down the club before the Chairman has even arrived and any proper selction process has been applied?
Furthermore why is it so public that this guy has been seen and this decision made?
The process already risks the suggestion that the appointed coach was not first choice!
A chance to make a clean start already smacks of rank amateurism and poor management. salford fans deserve better.

Did he apply for the job or was it all just paper talk?
Has anyone from the club made it public?
Has anyone from the club said he was first choice? Has anyone from the club said he was [iany[/i choice?
The answer to your fourth point depends on the answers to the previous three.

| I've heard a suggestion that Wrigley was advised to give Salford a wide berth by an NRL club official who used to work over here - they suggested that there may be better jobs coming up than the Salford one.

It is a botched job bearing no resemblance to a professional selection process.

| Or could it be that potential coaches price themselves out of it by asking for too much money?
It seems to me that the club is in a no win situation. If there is no statement then we get anxious because we don't know what's going on; if it drip feeds information along the way then people put a spin on these statements and may come up with the wrong answer.
In the mean time we are left with rumour and speculation. Other clubs looking for a new coach manage to carry out their selection process in relative secrecy as they haven't had a coaching vacancy so publicly obvious.
One thing I am certain of is that we need a new coach urgently and that coach needs to be a good one. The sooner it is all resolved the better. I don't care whether the new coach is perceived as first, second or third choice in some people's minds as long as he is good at his job and can get this group of players to perform to their potential on attack and defend with organisation, spirit and purpose.

I don't think it does. How could Wrigley be first choice before they even interviewed him or all the other applicants? Had he turned it down, had they offered him the job, then that would be different. From where I'm sat he's applied for the job and changed his mind before the interview. As it says in the newspaper there are still several others in Australia and England who want the job.

You may not care but some potential coaches do care about these things. and if simms had not cleared it with Wrigley that he was going public then that would be another c*ck up.

So it was NOT an interview but it WAS talks with Wrigley and talks with his agent. And as a result of these talks - not an interview - Wrigley says that he is not interested in the salford job.
And then the need for a public announcement from Simms.
The jabbering with the press by Simms shows he is out of his depth with such an important project. .

| I can't understand some of the comments in the past few hours.
I've never been to an interview and been the only person they see, surely prudence dictates that with Wilky, Clague and Simms in Australia we do proper interviews in any interested in the job and then use due dilligence making the biggest decision in decades by any Salford coach.
To me it shows that we for once ar going about things the right way rather than making a knee jerk reaction and appointing John Harvey mk11.
I'm willing to give them all the time they need to get the right man to turn us into a competitive top 6 side in bright shiney state of the art stadium rather than a shambolic outfit in a crumbling hole.

Did the Silver Fox bang your missus or something?!
Your comments about our search for a new coach are far more damning and potentially destructive than Simms' quotes in the MEN.

| [iPress reports this morning state Wests Tigers assistant coach Peter Gentle is more than keen to join the Reds, and from what I've read it's a two-year [£100,000 deal on offer.
Everything could be sorted out as early as Wednesday this week.

| Sometimes the press exadurate storys to make good news we will never find the real reason behind wrigley not taking the job. If gentle as the credentials to do the job then let's get him ASAP as he as a lot of work to do. I just hope simms don't make any mistakes

oh dear you are light on rugby issues. i must take a look at your past posts and see who you criticise - presumably they are all 'banging your missus'
if you think simms has managed the process well then please explain how so.
