| Its great to read post with some with sense, where have you been hiding Metsmagic? Once again i am in complete agreement with you.
Business is run on results not promises.
Maybe the people who post telling us we are not proper fans or to F off should wake up. Its amazing how so of many of them are now content to be second bottom when at the start of the season they beleived the chairmans' top eight predictions and best squad for a long time boasts.
Simple fact is we finshed fifth 3yrs ago and like normal Salford sat on our thumbs and went forward by not strengthening.
As to BBM saying to be positive and look at whats good, where is the up to date website (nothing on it about the stadium letter)? the online store? the club shop that has no stock? shall i go on?
Stick you heads in the sand but when you lift them up we wont be in Superleague.
As to this season, yes we compete and get beat! have none of you thought that other teams are signing players now and not standing still.

Did we?
I'd like to think that we're looking to follow in the footsteps of Cas. They had a couple of shock wins last year and got a similar amount of wins, although we could still go on to better their points total.
We were never going to take the league by storm - we lost half our players almost 2 years ago and had to build a team yet again. I think we've done fairly well considering our finances and the situation we found ourselves in.

| Castleford deliberatly didnt spend the salary cap last year so they could spend it this year and compete.
We wont spend it this year or next year and you can throw Bradford at me but its simple economics, if a team spends the salary cap they can afford a bigger squad to cover injuries or better players. If you dont spend that salary cap your behind the other already as you going to get injuries, even St Helens do. As Alec Murphy said you pay peauts you get monkeys
And the Cas youngsters want to stay unlike Myler and Turner

What a powerful combined mind...
Quote ="Gruffy"Business is run on results not promises. '"
Some businesses are run on a shoestring by extraordinarily committed people. Surviving is in itself a 'result'.

Is it really amazing how content many of us are given that 2nd bottom was the popular prediction for our finish? It's pretty obvious that you and your fellow dummy-spitters are the one's with deflated 'top-8' expectations...
Quote ="Gruffy"Simple fact is we finshed fifth 3yrs ago and like normal Salford sat on our thumbs and went forward by not strengthening. '"
Ahh, was that the season our crowds trebled on the back of our success (as we keep being told by dummy-spitters it will)??
We must've been rolling in extra funding (as we keep being told by dummy-spitters it will)??
Or were the crowds pretty much the same as previous, the funds pretty much the same as previous and the squad pretty much the same as previous?
Quote ="Gruffy"As to BBM saying to be positive and look at whats good, where is the up to date website (nothing on it about the stadium letter)? the online store? the club shop that has no stock? shall i go on? '"
Yes, go on?
But before you do, tell us all how much revenue the previous online store generated?
Also, given that it's now July - let us know exactly how much stock the shop needs to satisfy the legions of shopper banging at the door each week?
Quote ="Gruffy"Stick you heads in the sand but when you lift them up we wont be in Superleague. '"
And here's the point - We don't currently deserve to be there. The club has worked miracles to secure this franchise and all you, and those like you can do is criticise, bitch and moan.
Quote ="Gruffy"As to this season, yes we compete and get beat! have none of you thought that other teams are signing players now and not standing still.'"
Sh*t-the-bed, you're right! How much do you think we should go out and spend? I say empty the burger-stand tills and give Lockyer a bell! You?

| I will renew my season ticket next season & rejoin forever reds & will be there home & away, but this has not been a good season.
Yes some highlights along the way but the rugby has not been enjoyable.
Blind faith yes, I must have because I have not enjoyed this season, I am not happy with the way the club as kept us in the dark over the most important development in the clubs history.
Fans are frustrated & the view being expressed by some fans that they will not renew there season ticket I fully understand. They then should not be subject to being told to f... o.. because they are fed up with the false promises the club keep giving, all I can say is to those who say we don't need you, welcome to the empty stadium next year because this view is growing & this is not just the view of a few numpty's
I actually expected us to finish in the bottom 3 but it is the rugby we have played & the lack of progress by the club which I believe is causing the disenchantment amoung the fans
Wait for the abuse, I probably be told to go now that we don't need fans like me.

Sexy rugby it isn't but would you swap positions with Celtic? They've managed to throw the ball around a bit in defeat.

I have had no expectations about where we would finish & as a Salford fan I don't want to be bottom but don't kid yourself about the type of rugby we have played.
I have watched us come up many times & finish second to bottom on many occasions but fans actually still enjoyed there rugby, I cannot say that about this years rugby.
I will be there next season hoping as most fans do that next season will be better, but I am not wearing rose coloured tints & I was expressing a point of view that I understand some fans frustration at the brand of rugby being played & that they should be entitled to express a view without being told to f... o..

A Letter to EX.SALF.UNI
I wont reply to your post with any other comment except as to answer you questions.
1)Combined Mind - very funny, glad the university education worked.
2)I have never doubted the boards commitment to the club, but it still doesnt make them effective. You may think surving is a result but they dont.
3)If you want to know i thought we would finish bottom so i am extatic that i am wrong.
4)3yrs ago saints attendence 7000 (and im sure on SKY) this yr 5000, difference 2000 Why people thought it would be a hammering and stay away. 2000 people paying lets say on average a £10, £20k difference on the gate over a season it could be as much as being conservative £200K with the "glory fans going". You work it out. As you have been to Uni read Fortunato, J. (200icon_cool.gif or Shank's book (2005) on sports marketing. People dont watch rubbish
5)online shop yes i agree no demand and it never worked, have a look at the guidelines on the superleague letter released about the ground, it clearly says comercial ( www.superleague.co.uk/article.php?id=14771). Are online shop and merchandisng etc looks really good on our bid doesnt it?
6)Getting a franchise is past, Superleague are talking about the next one the letter is a warning get it sorted, yes they worked really hard on a bid, but unfortuanlty if the promises on that bid are not meet its not going to matter much what we put next time, cos the league wont believe us.
7)as to going out and splashing the cash, its not there, i no that but my point is this
we are behind the league now, they all spend more or have more superleague experience as we have only just come up. We are therefore probably going to struggle next year as everyone else is spending more and we will probably struggle the year after. Celtic wont be kicked out so who will? Us CAS or Wakey?
WHICH IS WHY THE CLUB HAS TO GET ITS OFF FIELD MANAGEMENT RIGHT AND NOW.
You make a joke about the burger stand tills, i wonder if the club owns them or are they are franchised out, reducing revenue further.
Yes we are not a big club but when ppl within are giving downcast messages and they are in the know, what do you expect others to think?

I've been around a few years myself so I expect we've watched many of the same games. I have never known us to be a particularly free-flowing side in the top division. But that's a little beside the point - all rugby fans crave an entertaining game, I'm no different. The greater problem (on here at least) are the seemingly growing number of delusional folk who seem to understand we have limited resources and crowds yet they whinge beyond reasoning when we can't break the bank to sign/keep players. Pretty basic logic to me?..

| I understand the points you are making but let get past some of the posts not worth reading on here & get to the point!
Too many fans are unhappy with what is happening to our club, & I mean good fans we cannot afford to lose.
EX.SAL.UNI we probably have the same feelings for the club & the same passion but I am not prepared to put my head in the sand anymore & say everything will be alright?

I will continue to buy a season ticket, continue to be a member of the forever reds.
I will hopefully raise concerns I have through the forum & as I have said before I am prepared to contribute increased contribution to the forever reds if it meant funding some of the accademy players
What more would you like me to do???

I don't want you to do anything, let alone anything more?!
My question was a genuine one, not a sarcastic dig at you.
There seems to be loads of people on here saying 'enough is enough' and other such things but no-one seems to be actually doing anything about it.
I suppose the obvious/easy option would be to stop attending matches/supporting the club but there's no sign of anyone doing that, or at least not in significant numbers.
Personally, I'm quite relatively content with the position the Reds are in so I willl keep doing the same as I've ever done but expect that some those who seem less happy would take some action.
Perhaps it's just apathy (something long associated with Reds fans) but there's plenty of moaning and no evident action. Maybe it's a cultural thing, because staff where I work are much the same at present too.

| I think the condescending attitude of some posters on this and recent other threads is disgraceful, there is a certain holier than thou feeling, and it seems to come from people who see no wrong whatsoever from within the club, and they try to talk down anyone who speaks up! "There not fans" ,"we don't need them" (have you seen the gaps in the terraces?) and to retort with the words "f *ck o*f !!!" if it doesn't toe the party line, is in it's basic form pathetic not to mention disrespectful to our "non we don't need you fans"
Yes we have won some games maybe saints/leeds hasn't helped really, the brand of rugby is awful, the crowd gets worse week on week, the lies and bulls*it from the club is at best not very funny, that reminds me where is my centenenary shirt?. I pay for my season ticket when there are freebies everywhere, even a Cas fan said he could have had as many as he wanted for a tenner!!!!! Not to mention Floridagate, player power, the stadium debacle etc I could go on .
I love this club like the next person but don't accept people being told to Fu*k off because they say something controversial..
Of my 43 years 39 of them have been a Red I've seen it all even the really great times !! Please don't treat our fans like lepers, we still live in a democracy not a dictatorship.

| Well done to Captain Planet on his thread starter. Finally, someone who is a realist, not a fantasist. And to smarta**e Ex Salford Uni & Gruffy - you two should get a room!
Red all over - I think most people would appreciate your point, but a lot of people here (and more importantly in the ground) are sick of player and board abuse, moronic behaviour and general stupid expectations of what would happen this year.
So maybe mistakes have been made, but if we announced tomorrow we had the funding from the college (and the stadium was go) what would they winge about then? Because they weren't told the day before an announcement would be made? All of the five clubs are struggling because of the economic climate - hardly something brought on by Salford's board.
As for not spending a fortune on the team and making the club broke, well.... shoot 'em!
Keep the faith - the club is only here to throw mud at because of John Wilkinson. We have young inexperienced players in the team, who by definition are inconsistent, but overall are a joy to watch. The books are balanced. We are trying to get a new stadium. If we don't get it in time, we'll get in time for the next franchise - like Widnes. And for every Cas & Wakey away, think of Leeds away and Saints.
Worth every penny of my money.

| You talk a lot of sense, the majority of it ([size=75[iand not only this thread[/i[/size), laced with sarcasm. I agree with a lot of what you say, however......
Quote ="EX.SALF.UNI" I have never known us to be a particularly free-flowing side in the top division. '"
....this quote is inaccurate imo.
Unless of course, you have only watched Salford in the SL years, in which case, I tend to agree with you.
I may be in a group of just 1 here, but I personally don't find the type of rugby now being played in SL, as entertaining as it was in [i'the good old days'.[/i I don't think that it's just Salford who can't play free flowing rugby anymore. I'm unsure if that's down to the Aussie coaching techniques in relation to defence, or quite simply that nowadays, the sides with the biggest, fittest and strongest squads will usually come out on top.
My biggest pet-hate is the amount of kicking in the game. It's becoming more like RU as each year goes by. I absolutely despise the cross field kick into the corner on the last tackle. To me it it's a lottery and a poor way to score a try when all other ideas after the 4th or 5th tackle have proved fruitless.

| Listen There are too many "fans" spending to much time complaining about this great club. Yes there look like hard times ahead but lets not make it harder EH !
Has anyone thought that not turning up to games or the idiots shouting abuse at the players is probably harming the club more than anything !!
I have stopped bringing my son to games due to the abuse at the end of a game which is a real shame cause at 4years old he was really getting into rugby(just as i'd finally got through to him its not football there playing)
I wonder how many more people this has effected?
I AM HERE TO SPREAD THE LOVE AND GET EVERYONE'S GOOD SPIRIT BACK
"EARTH!"
"FIRE!"
"WIND!"
"WATER!"
"HEART!"
"Go Planet!"
"By your powers combined, I am Captain Planet!"
Captain Planet, he's our hero
Gonna take pollution down to zero
He's our powers magnified
And he's fighting on the salford's side
Captain Planet, he's our hero
Gonna take pollution down to zero
Gonna help him put asunder
Bad guys who like to loot and plunder
We're the salfordteers
You can be one too
'Cause saving our salford is the thing to do!
Shouting and abusing is not the way
Hear what Captain Planet has to say!

Good post.
There is so much at stake in SL these days that the sport has literally turned into the proverbial arm-wrestle. The sport has become a little too obsessed with statistics, percentages and the strategic side of the game at the expense of free thought and open rugby. Salford just reflects this trend and the sport is certainly a lot flatter than it was a few years ago.
It can still be exciting and physically it is immense, it's just that the game flows and changes with trends. It's no different from most pro sport these days. Creative flair is still there in SL it's just that sides are so much better at countering it these days.
The game we love is constantly evolving and that is why the Rugby is different from the free-flowing stuff seen yesteryear. Whether that is a good thing for us the supporters, who knows?

And why has all this come in it is because of Sky copying the yanks whose sport is so boring they have to have all these stats to show that something has happened. I now turn off boots n all when Cullen does his break down of the plays because apart from his dull monotone voice he is talking absolute b0ll0cks and seems confused, lets get back to attacking rugby and off the cuff moves Kenny Gill and Dave Watkins style.

as a professional economist...
thats the quickest way of going bust. spend more than you earn, and be the next widnes, swinton, oldham or rochdale...
