| Quote ="middleman"not wanting to heap any pressure on Phil Veivers , but with the sort of names & money mentioned . and with the likes of Brian Smith , Brian McClennan out there without a club , how long before the pressure to put a named Coach in charge that will attract named players become the inevitable?
If we aim to afford a Jamie Soward for 2014 , then why not a Tim Sheens ?'"
When I posted this on 26th Feb I didn't expect it to be as prophetic in 5 days
On reflection Veivers chances of being retained at the the end of the season were minimal , not down to recent results , just down to what's written above, they ( Chalmers & Lowe ) were over here to watch the last two games HKR & Broncos then fly back to NZ and were going to make the decsion at some time this season , why not now ?
They've already admitted they plan to restructure the club from top to bottom , a third of the cuurent squad out of contract at the end of the season are unlikely to be retained. not point trying to keep sweet a squad they are not happy with, no point bringing in new players under a coach they were unlikely to retain .

| I was thinking after the London game , how can we be so different after the KR match! This time last year we had a stronger squad and weren't doing any better.
The Doc has his mind set on whats best for the club and wants success. Maybe this ruthlessness is what we have been missing for a long , long time. He aint been successful in his past ventures by being Mr. nice guy!!

| Maybe the shocking performance on Friday is partially down to layers having a good idea PV was on his way.
Would hope for a new coach to be brought in before new players as I'm never a big fan of anyone other than the head coach bringing in players.
I think most of us would hope got an English coach but I can only see one being brought in until the end of the season, a Kear or Noble type would do me. I saw someone mention Edwards earlier in this thread and I'd love him to come back to RL as think he'd make a world class coach.

| Was only a matter of time til Vievers went. Surprised by the speed of it but in the long run it will turn out for the best.
Despite the terrible off season it was frustrating to see the same mistakes being made on the field, mainly no line speed in defence, not being able to defend kicks and having to suffer Howarth at 9 every week.
Interesting to see Hunte put in temporary charge over Long. A nod towards youth development or just a case of him being at the club longer?

I think a good example of an ambitious club with money not being ruthless was Warrington a few years back with Paul Cullen. You could cut the guy in half and he would bleed Warrington but he wasn't the guy to take them to the next level. They then made the decision to bring Tony Smith in (love him or loathe him) and the rest is history.

Thanks for the info.
Just been reading Paul Anderson and Tony Smiths comments regarding PV. " A rash decision from people with no history in the game" ?? Someone should inform them that the likes of Ed Farish and Graham Lowe are now employed by the Dr.
Seems our doings and dealings are ruffling feathers throughout. So be it I say. Seems to be sinking in now that we mean business and the Salford City Reds are slowly but surely rising

Don't think so as Paul Cullen was not at the club. He might have thought about James Lowes who he succeeded Small point but one that needed clearing up.

| Good luck Phil thanks for standing by us during the terrible times when we thought we were going under
But we now live in a different world and 1 win in the last 12 isnt good enough for the doctor.
The Doctor is ruthless and will cut out any bad eggs / wrong people involved he wants to succeed like we do
i have no idea who we can attract hopefully somebody who has been a successful head coach before and not a novice assistant like we always seem to get.

| Harsh yes but inevitable? Definitely.
Veivers did an OK job considering what was going on, but some of the recent displays dating back to July last year were awful to say the least. Your squad is a lot better than what has been churned out weekly, so for me it was just a matter of time before Koukash said his goodbyes to Veivers.
If you could somehow persuade Shaun Edwards back into RL I think you'd be on to a winner there.
Holding out for Tim Sheens though would be a masterstroke. You'd get your big name signing through him.

| Twenty four hours on I have had some time to reflect, for what it's worth, on yeterday's decision.
I have to say that I feel sorry for Phil Veivers, who has had a very difficult time at Salford. When he first got the job he was second choice; he then had to soldier on as his better players were sold or jumped ship and then had to endure the uncertainty of not knowing whether the club would still exist whilst he tried to keep a team together. I did not see him getting sacked this early into the season.
That last sentence, however, says more about me as a die hard Salford fan who had begun to accept the disappointing performance as the norm. I had become used to losing; I had grown used to accepting defeat and disappointment.
I would guess that the new Board met on Saturday. I think this because Dr Koukash said they would review the game and I understand that Andrew Chalmers and Graham Lowe were due to return to New Zealand yesterday. During the review of the game and their discussions, the Board must have decided that what they saw was unacceptable. I don't think Phil Veivers helped himself with his post-match analysis when he claimed that there wasn't much to choose between the two sides. I would think that was noted. I also think that Phil Veivers' signings haven't helped him. I know that he didn't have much time and had little cash, but Ryan McGoldrick seems to have given us very little so far; Rhys Williams did little to impress and Jack Murphy has had a nightmare. Yet, as other posters have noted, Phil Veivers decided to extend his loan deal by another month when everybody I speak to would have said, "Thanks but no thanks" and have put Evalds in the team at full back. Indeed, nearly every Salford fan would have promoted last year's U20s and given them a chance.
If that is what Salford fans are thinking then it would be no surprise if the Board did not think the same thing. Perhaps that is why Phil Veivers was shown the door. Perhaps they thought he had made errors of judgement.
As far as a new coach is concerned, I doubt that we will be able to land a "big name" coach at this stage. Why would an Australian or New Zealand "big name" coach want to leave his club at the start of a season to come to work with the squad we currently have at Salford? I cannot see Tim Sheens giving up his job as coach to the Australian National Team to come to Barton. I think it much more likely that the existing Board will use their contacts at Manly, Gold Coast or in New Zealand to find the man that they consider is the best up and coming coach. Certainly, the new Board means business and if money's no object we may be able to attract an established, quality coach, but whoever comes is going to need time and more quality players in the squad if we are to achieve any success this season.
In the meantime I hope that Alan Hunte, as a Rugby genius, can get a much better performance out of the team at Wakefield next Sunday.

Tim Sheens offered a 'come and get me' to NRL and SL Clubs earlier in the month, saying he wants to get back into Club RL. Sheens has been over in the UK this week supposedly sounding-out venues and facilities for the Kangaroos during the WC. Sydney Morning Herald linked him with the job this morning. Money is not an object when it comes to signing coaches, so a decent contract and plenty of cash will probably bring in the right man.

| I’ve not bothered reading though the whole thread so apologises if it’s been discussed already.
Firstly I’d like to thank Phil for everything he has done in difficult circumstances, but the decision by Koukash and his very experienced backroom is 1000% the correct one. If we want to start building for next season and start attracting the very top players then we need a top coaching set up. I don’t think it’s too early for change at all, in fact it’s the perfect time. It will give the new man time to put procedures in place and sign players ready for next season so we can really start to compete from the off!
Also to the numpties I’ve seen on twitter and facebook who are calling for Alker and Goulding to come into the coaching set up arrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!! How stupid are you people? Why an earth do we need to go back? We need to look forward. We now have the chance to progress and move forward and really get some top quality coaches in place. People who really think Alker will turn us into a top team if he was employed in some form or other are seriously deluded, same goes for people who think the Former ROCHDALE HORNETS coach Bobbie Goulding would be a good choice. No no no.
The new man whoever that may be will be a world class proven coach and he will have his own world class coaching team and advisors he will want to bring with him of that I have no doubt. The time is now for this club to move from the dark ages of Alker and his cronies and move into a new successful era for Salford RLFC. If it doesn’t happen with this man in charge, it never will. He means business and to me it makes a refreshing change. A clear out is exactly what this club needed and that exactly what is happening!!
This isn’t a dig at Alker and what he did do for us IN THE PAST by the way, just a dig at the fans who think we should be employing him again IN THE FUTURE!!

| Can anyone, seriously, imagine Veivers coaching any other SL team either now or in the not too distant future??
Would the calibre of players we're looking at bringing in work under a no-name coach??
The one thing that I see as shining brightly here is that those in charge have shown that they haven't automatically given up on this season as the majority of us fans have done. They want to see results and quickly, not 3-4 years down the line. Ace.

I agree. If you have the money and want to be the best you have to pay for the best. I think we will all have a better idea of just how serious or ambitious the new regime is by the calibre of their appointment. Actions speak louder than words, a massive named proven coach with a great record of success or a gamble on a young coach with potential? Let's wait and see if they really do mean business.

Who was the last Salford coach to be recruited by a top level side? Ashcroft after his first stint? It's a rarity anyway.

Alan's done a good job in his role as head of youth development but doesn't have any coaching experiance at senior level. Personally I'd have thought Longy was the obvious choice considering his day to day involvement with the first team squad.
