There's still little sections of the old Irwell left in Irlam, one near the Boat House pub and a bit near Boysnope. The vast majority was taken up with the Ship Canal though.

as the worlds leading authority on the River Irwell, I can say the the old course does infact run by the Stadium, the river does enter the Ship canal near the docks, but rivers have a habit of still having old watercourses that are fed by groundwater as that is the quickest way back to the sea. it is all part of the Mersey Basin.
