This year is the bridgewater canal 250th anniversary.

In 1977 on the Queens Silver Jubilee visit to the area they dropped large blocks of blue dye into the canal to disguise the orange coloured water.

The tunnels TF asks about: As Middleman says there are about 45-50 miles of water tunnels under parts of Salford. They were built for shifting coal from the various collieries. The tunnels were designed to be low height and width allowing the barges to be moved by workers laying flat on there backs and using their feet to move the barge along. This transport mode was known as 'Legging it'.

"legging it" means a whole new thing these days

The Duke of Bridgewater tunnels are an engineering marvel. I had a lecture about them a few months ago, twas really good. The tunnels are on several "levels" as well, like floors. They were going to try and open a part of them up as an attraction a while back, but the majority of it is deemed unsafe these days. I dunno if I'd fancy going in one
