In 1977 on the Queens Silver Jubilee visit to the area they dropped large blocks of blue dye into the canal to disguise the orange coloured water.
The tunnels TF asks about: As Middleman says there are about 45-50 miles of water tunnels under parts of Salford. They were built for shifting coal from the various collieries. The tunnels were designed to be low height and width allowing the barges to be moved by workers laying flat on there backs and using their feet to move the barge along. This transport mode was known as 'Legging it'.
