| WARRINGTON WOLVES U20s 40 34 SALFORD CITY REDS U20s
Warrington Wolves maintained their position at the top of the table after a thrilling high scoring victory over Salford City Reds in the Valvoline Cup at Wilderspool Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The game was end to end with both sides showing some great attacking flair and it was the home side who managed to record the win despite a very brave effort from a Reds side who never gave up.
The Wolves opened the scoring in the fourth minute when hooker Jon Clarke went on his own from dummy half and shot through a gap before finding scrum half Jordan Burke in support to race over under the posts. Stand off Bobbie Goulding added the conversion but the Reds hit back eleven minutes later when good hands by second row Jack Spencer and stand off Tom Whitehead created room for winger Jon Ford to slide over in the right corner. Scrum half Craig Noon landed a fine touchline conversion to level the scores.
Salford took the lead on the half hour when half backs Whitehead and Noon combined to find centre Brad Hargreaves who put Ford over in the right corner, Noon again converted from wide out but the Wolves hit back three minutes later when good work by Jamie Peasnell, returning to the side after a long layoff with a knee injury, saw him make a break before finding fellow substitute Liam Hulme who scored at the left of the posts. Goulding added on the goal points.
Four minutes before the break a kick by Burke was fumbled by the Reds defence and centre James Mendeika swooped on the loose ball to score wide out on the left. Goulding converted to give his side an 18-12 interval lead.
Three minutes into the second half Salford hooker Gareth Owen intercepted a Wolves pass and raced forty metres to score wide out. Noon converted but four minutes later a lovely flat pass from Burke on the last tackle found Mendeika who rounded his opposite number to score on the left. Goulding added the extras.
Again the Reds responded when good work out wide saw the Wolves defence stretched and a smart pass from centre Max Viper put winger Scott Wilson over in the left corner, Noon goaling to bring the scores level again but then Wolves winger Ben Hellewell intercepted a Salford pass and raced sixty metres to score under the posts and give Goulding the easiest of conversions and then Hellewell used his strength to reach out and score in the right corner despite three defenders on him to stretch the Wolves advantage to ten points.
Wolves' winger Ryan Shaw made a great break down the left wing before kicking ahead and Burke won the chase to collect and score. Goulding added the conversion to give the Wolves a sixteen point lead but the Reds still refused to buckle and when Whitehead rounded the cover to score under the posts and added the conversion himself the deficit was back to ten points.
Seven minutes from time Salford got themselves deep into the Wolves half and a great offload from second row Toby Adamson put Hargreaves over in the right corner to set up a grandstand finish but the Wolves ensured that there would be no further scoring as they held out for a 40-34 success.
After the game Wolves Under 20s Head Coach Richard Marshall said:"To concede thirty four points at home is disappointing but credit must go to Salford who put up a really spirited performance. They rattled us at times and played some really good rugby. Usually when we score two or three tries we pull away from sides but they never let us do that today. Having said that a win is a win so we have to be pleased with that aspect.
