He was shocking even more so when you consider we sacked off Greg Austin to bring him in.

| Don't remember Misili Manu or Blake Cannovo playing many, if any, games at SL level. For me, a player who actually played games but was absolutely terrible was Troy Wozniak.

TBF Goulding looked a world beater for the Kiwis the year before but why you would release such a prolific try scrorer was a bit baffling!
Dave Hoskins must be up there for HKR.

We've had quite a few at Widnes over the years...Kyle White, Boycie Nelson, Marty Moore, Shane Wilson, Brian Jellick, Sam Hansen, Anthony Singleton...the list is endless!.

Him and Sully junior were a deadly partnership.
As you say why anyone would want to break that up is baffling.

| Totally wrong on that one JB, Michael Smith ran over players like they were not even there. His fitness and commitment to HKR was always going to be in question as it has been all his career wherever he has played but he was nowhere near this category by his performances on the pitch.

at Maccas! "conditioning not the best" now there's an understatement. I thought the days of players of that size were over when Brendan Hill retired but Smith kept the "portly" legend alive! I believe he was on a fair whack of money and imo did little to earn it and certainly showed his committment by keeping himself in prime shape!

| Your distance certainly puts you at a disadvantage on this one JB. Usually your pretty spot on with most things HKR but Michael Smith was a star performer in most games he played for our club. Numerous man of the match awards among plenty of times James Webster took them when probably not playing better than Smithy. His offloading skill was something no other National League club then had while his unstoppable runs coupled with Makali's barnstorming ones really put us on the front foot, none more so than the NL Grand Final in 2006.
I am with you on the larger frame, it was a long time ago that this fitness regime worked however for him in the lower league it did. I would also say players like Feka and Solomona are not too far off being the same size as Smith. Oh and lets not forget Michael was on the reserve list to play for New Zealand whilst playing for Rovers.

| Abraham 'Butch' Fatnowna - so much talent, so little effort
Kyle White - a complete ar5ehole on and off the pitch
Lafaele Filipo - big man, small heart
Richard Henare - space cadet extraordinaire
But none of them even came close to the atrocious David Fraisse who's faults would require a whole new thread.....

| Back in the 1980s Bradford Northern got a bloke called Mario Fenech who wandered about looking lost and without expending any great effort. He lasted about two games. There are some people (with, perhaps, shorter memories) from Bradford who put in a claim for Nick Zisti, who was also pretty undistinguished, but he was in a different league to Fenech who took being useless to amazing levels.

| haha Mario is now on the Footy show and equally as lost! I think that ball to the head , hence his nickname Falcon, knocked what remaining brain cells he had left out!
There is a classic wind up of him on that well known video site, look for "Kurt Gidley pranks mario fenech".

| Same as previous Wigan fans it would have to be Doc Murray. He was useless bar his debut in a boxing day friendly against Saints when he got mom.
It was all downhill from there.

Manu did once scored a 90 metre try in a cup game for Leigh against Leeds, mind.
We've had a few. Jason Ferris, Luke Issaka (who played the sum total of 25 minutes in a two year contract IIRC), Alan Mason...

| We have had a fair few at Cas, but for me Brent Sherwin was the worst value for money player we have ever signed. Massive wages but never even attempted to get match-fit when he wasn't injured.

Will have to agree to disagree JB. IMO Michael Smith was a critical part of our promotion season. If we hadn't made it that year we probably wouldn't be there now (Cas would have been hot favs to go up in 2007, as they did do). Therefore Smithy was worth whatever we were paying him.
