| Quote ="jools"Other incidents have been mentioned on here with claims nothing was done---- did anyone complain to the rfl or players' club about these incidents or did folk just witter about it on forums? Everyone is looking to the rfl for this- Wigan as a club should take the lead.
Hutch maiava did something similar to the hudds crowd a few years ago- that incident was reported to hull fc by members of the crowd including me- and maiava was disciplined by fc, who dealt with it very seriously - all credit.
My kids idolize all rugby players I don't want that sort of behavior to be a role model for my kids, if that comes across as sad I make no apology for it. I expect my kids to show respect for others no matter what - players as professionals should be leading by example. I didn't see eorl crabtree sticking v signs when booed and called names by saints fans last week.
sam is getting stick - but he has himself to blame for it - if he can't handle it then perhaps wigan should organize anger management classes. That young man is very lucky I suspect if he didn't have rugby he'd have nothing as he wouldn't last two minutes in other employment.'"
The Eastmond incident has also been referred to as being similar. Eastmond was suspended by Saints while it was investigated, hardly treated lightly by the club.
It will be interesting to see the stance that Wigan take.

| i undertsand some people are a little upset, but coming out with crap like 'i cant wait for the aussies to smash him' does nothing except give more defensive ammunition to those who would blindly defend this completely unacceptable behaviour. Nor does the punishment(or lack thereof) given to someone else in a completely unrelated incident in a different game, involving different teams have any real bearing upon sam tomkins actions yesterday. precedent is a cop out, what he did yesterday is just unacceptable regardless of what lee smith last season or the guy who bullied you at age six got away with.
its just not on, it cannot be reasonably defended and the actions of others at other times are no justification for doing it or going unpunished.

| If he was good looking, had some charisma and wasnt a complete dick he would be the perfect poster boy for RL. Even his petulance and childish behaviour like this would be excused.
But he has the unfortunate correlation of both looking like a scratty little kid who would have his tracksuit bottoms tucked into his socks and coming across like he has the personality of table with a persecution complex.
Sam Tomkins could have been RL's David Beckham, he is unfortunately closer to RL's Phil Neville.

With a name like Grego you would probably do best to be careful when joking about injuries and such obtained during the course of Rugby League being deserved.

Since when did we start injuring players for swearing... unless you're trying to equate a player hurting himself during foul play with it or something, in which case had Tomkins broken his fingers trying to swear, that too would have had more than a hint of poetic justice.
If you don't refer to the McGuire incident I'm sorry but the comment was lost on me.

| If you can't take it don't give it out. Trotting out the 'family game' stuff when the lad gets all kinds of abuse from the terraces is laughable, family game when it suits. A nothing incident that is being blown up out of all proportion.

Good point, I personaly think he could deal with the abuse in a clever way with some witty comment or by just playing harder & better. I would be unhappy with any action against him untill the hundreds of morons at all clubs who think it is normal to hurl vitriol & spite at players are got rid of as well. Maybe he could bring charges against the next person in the crowd who swears at him? now that would start somthing.

The Wigan fans lack the intelligence to realise why he's hated. He acts with no class at all and is an embarassment.
What does he gain from acting like that?
The truth with Tomkins is that he's not able to cope with the abuse he's getting. He cannot channel it well and it is affecting him. It might be a relatively minor incident but it's one that further downgrades how the public perceive him. He has guaranteed that he will be booed when he next plays for England next and he is backing himself into a corner with all these acts of utter petulance. And he's got no one to blame either, it's his own fault people will abuse him.

It doesn't seem to be affecting him that badly as he adds another medal to his collection. Why should he care what those on the terraces think about him and why should he not be able to give a bit back? It seems that those who are most upset by his behaviour are those that try and provoke him in the first place and I would suggest it is them who have the problem not Tomkins.

Because one side pays their money, the other is paid their money.
Tomkins would do well to remember he is a paid representative of the game, and his behaviour will be judged so. If Tomkins cant behave in a way befitting a professional player he will be punished for his transgressions (though in proportion to his offence, 1 game and £500 is probably about right in this case)

So because you pay your money you have the right to use foul and abusive language and/or gestures? However, if you are being paid then you have to accept foul and abusive language and/or gestures? Absolute rubbish always makes me laugh when those dishing it out get a bit back nad then go crying to the stewards/police/mummy/internet forum. If people are seriously offended by what Tomkins did and find it a disgrace then I suggest that they stop going to rugby games as it must be a very traumatic experience.

I agree, the punishment should fit the crime. It's just whether any punishment is forth coming.

A 1match ban and £500 fine would probably be a fair punishment for his behaviour. Im not sure we should be involving the police or mummy (especially as its Sunday, she should have a roast on the go)

| It is for how it has made our game look to the casual viewers on the BBC that he should have the book thrown at him. The RFL play heavily on the family game aspect for TV rights, sponsorship etc and he has damaged that.

I can think of plenty of things that make the game look far worse than a player sticking 2 fingers up at opposition supporters. Looked like he was just giving a little bit back so the 'petulant baby' stuff is an ott response to a bit of banter.
