No, I don't.
I have no doubt that as soon as the Northern Union broke away, the Union bods were seething and probably wanted to destroy it. Over the years they have handed out lifetime bans to players associated with league (whilst paying players...this I know about as I was party to it in the 1980's) and most definitely have carried double standards around for many years......BUT, since the Union lot went pro, they have pretty much ignored League.
The IRB havemanaged, since 1995, to get the world sevens circus up and running, increasing revenue and exposure, especially in places like the USA. Seen the RUWC become a massive TV event (in the eyes of the people who matter...TV advertisers), taken Italy on board in Europe, Argentina into the new 4 nations comp from 2012 and had the shorter version of their game accepted to the Olympics. They (and their individual unions) have managed to negotiate mega bux deals for tv rights and sponsorship.

England RL played France a few weeks back in front of less than 8,000 people. Italy....hardly a Rugby Union stronghold before professionalism, sold out their stadium (32k) for the visit of England and Scotland in last years 6 nations.........hardly suprising that I think the IRB couln't care less about league any more......the 2 best nations in European League attract 8k.....the 2 worst teams in the 6 nations (scotland/Italy) attract a crowd 4 times that size......

Internationally, League doesn't exist as far as the IRB is concerned.......and internationally is where the big TV deals come from........
England, PNG, Australia and New Zealand....not much interest outside those countries.

Loads of one sided matches here, but that's a world cup line up to make big hitting GLOBAL advertisers sit up and Japan and the USA are worth more to the IRB than any 4 nations competition is to League....\....so no, the IRB are no longer bothered by League...IMO that is

This is a thread about expansion...I didn't metion Union or any other sport for that matter, but as usual, when someone else did, they were jumped on.
All I am saying is that expansion is all well and good, but when competing with other codes, it is not just the same TV money you compete for...it is the advertisers/sponsors, the fans ticket money, the beer they buy at stadiums etc....and sorry, but some on here think the model that is Australia is the world.....it isn't. League is a minority sport apart from in Australia (anyone who says PNG I will ask for a full financial report on the state of that country...it's total income, expenditure etc.......IT DOESN'T COUNT as to how many people play the game).....and rather than worry about supposed IRB plans to kill the game off, they should worry about the ARL and soccer.
I am glad that ARL/NRL are looking at new places to try and get a team going...they should be applauded!

I attend more games of RL in year than you do in five. Perhaps you should actually supported the game you supposedly love. Commenting with your head in the sand from in front of a TV screen is hardly support? Those that do attend games simply discount your views in the way they do Dally Messenger as the ramblings of a hypocrite.

Unlike you with your head in the sand, I don't think the garden of RL is full of roses and as a sport we have much to learn from other more successful sports like soccer, rules and rugby union.

There has been plenty to talk about in regards to expansion and yet you wouldn't know it.

Just this year we've had 5 figure crowds in WA, SA and NZ, but no one wants to talk about it except a few and their posts get over run by trolls.

make a thread about TV rating, crowds, expansion and the trolls all come out and start talking about their fav sports all the while kicking RL and telling everyone more or less that love the game to get back in their box.

If you want to make a new thread about expansion, go for it, we'll see how far it gets and if it does get derailed by the same fools, something might get done.

Expansion is all well and good, but before you embark on it, you must look into the pro's and con's (no pun intended) of each area you you are going into.
For example, when SL started in the UK some 15 years ago, it was considered safe to assume that a london based SL outfit would pull in 10k minimum every home game........the amount of ex-pat Anzacs (750k) in the city at any one time would surely flock to see some League. What the organisers of Super League failed to consider was the general apathy that sports fans have in Australia unless they are talking about their favourite club side or the international team. Therefore, what should have been a roaring success, has in fact turned out to be an abject failure from a business point of view.
What Superleague failed to consider was the existing sporting landscape in London....the predominance of soccer at every point and the recent alarming decline of the London Monarch American Football team......
...what also didn't help was the perception that League was a northern game, played by miners with flat caps and pigeons in their lofts....the supposed north/south divide of wealth and all of the other things available outside of sport that was trying to attract the same disposable income.
So, Expansion for Expansions sake, doesn't work......what you need is a demographic breakdown of what you are up against, how well other sports (including Union and AFL) are doing and what REAL response you can expect from the local public. Christchurch recently had 20k for a warriors/Roosters game...that points to an audience being there.....but the same audience rolled up for the soccer team last year, so is that crowd just a one-off from an local population starved of decent first grade sport outside of Union, or indicative of what would happen every second week if a team were established there? Is there the financialbacking in place to support a full time pro team, or will Murdoch need to prop the fledgling franchise up (a la Storm)?
I don't know much about perth, but I would say that any 2nd NZ franchise would get gates of between 15 and 20k in its first year and dependant on performance, would settle at around 13k....is that enough to warrant a second NZ franchise? Is it enough to be self suficient? Would perth or Adelaide fair any better?
