Check ou this website where a number of amateur physicists try and explain what the Ausies are getting at.

So it's not really a whinge there is actually a science behind their thinking.

| The weather is against Australia. The referees are against Australia.
Jesus Christ. What next? The gravity pull of the earth? The oxygen levels in Manchester? The green kit colour? Ghosts? They're supposed to be the best team in the world. It's one of the main sports in Australia, the number one sport in several major cities, something we can't nearly say. They don't need excuses to be better than us, the priorities of the aussie public pretty much guarantees it. They have advantages over us from the offset yet they could moan for the commonwealth.
Grow up kangaroos. We all saw how neutral an aussie ref has been in recent years, you want to bias the tournament at a cost to its credibility just because you need to win.

Probably Sheens who put the seeds of doubt in the journalists head in the first place, then denys it.
I'm sure if they lose they will blame something or someone for the loss, and not give England any credit.

| Now its a thread whining about The Australian Coach whining, Sheens is not the mouth piece of the Nation and is disliked by many Australian fans.
It seems every year its the same old same old.
We will win we have better forwards.
The Aussies are not as good this year.
The Aussies want it all their own way.
They will find an excuse if they lose.
I do not recall too many Aussies whinging when they lost the final last year or in the last World Cup, the Coach may have moaned because his job is on the line and he has a view that is affected by every small decision and every rub of the green, but the fans accepted the result of the day.
How about if we wish for a good game and the best team on the day wins and the Ref is almost invisible?

Did it?
If that's what you can remember from 19 years ago you need to get out more.
Princess Di's death, why the comparison?

| The rain won't do them any harm at all. As somebody pointed out their handling skills are better as are the majority of their 'basics' like a kicking game, a kick chase and general defending.
None compare to their moaning skills though. They're simply the best at that and I don't really see why they feel the need to be.

Fair enough Jonesy. I do tbh. It's just a regular occurence and quite unnecesary to make any comments about British people (and kiwis) love of playing in wet weather. As I tell players here. Look at my hands, we have much bigger webbing as we've evolved them whereas Australians didn't evolve this amazing bodily function.

Your memory appears to be a bit shady about the "dodgy" penalty try call though. Or you live where you didn't see any media after that final. Do you recall ads in the Daily Telegraph where you could buy a limited edition Kangaroos World Cup Winners memorabilia. Thing is, it was in the paper on the day of the final itself!

Ooh let me see, a thread about whether we have an inherent advantage against the Aussies in the rain. Probably our biggest win in over 30 years where ET was falling over like a circus clown might be relevant.

| I don't see how we're any better equipped to deal with wet conditions than the Aussies, unless the weather has got significantly worse since I left. I can count the number of times I got -wet through at a Superleague game on one hand. Honestly the way some people see it you'd think we played in the rain every week!

Who are these Aussies you are talking about?
Just the Coach or people you know?
It rains very hard for a short period in Australia, its either Tropical or Sub Tropical the rain is nearly all in the Summer months.
Its not Manchester drizzle it often like a monsoon for a couple of days, that's what gets the rainfall average up.
The Winter (when the NRL season is played) is the "dry" season.
Climate and geography is complex I know.

You are right I was not there.
Both the World Cup final and last years four Nations I was tempted to go but only if it was Oz v England and I did not have the confidence that England would make it. (I was right)
No real desire to see Oz v Kiwis its just like another souped up NRL match.

| Quote ="a geek"It is not the same. If you walk under the rain, you get the rain from two direction: from ahead W1 and from front of you W2.
W1 is proportional to the the time you travel : the longer you go, the bigger W1
W1 = S/V*A1*J :
where S : the distance from A to B
V : your speed
J : the flux of the rain (drop/m2/sec)
A1 : cross section area of your body according to vertical direction (perpendicular to)
W2 is calculated as follow:
W2 = A2*J *sin(actan(V/Vo))*S/V
where A2 the cross section area of your body according to the direction you go
Vo : speed of the rain drop.
I think (W1+W2) will depend on V and may be we can find its max/min value.'"
Clever stuff, but I'd suggest that this man has never seen a girl naked.

| What a great example this thread is of turning a fairly innocent response to a reasonable question into something way more significant than it should be!
Even the most biased England fan must see Australia as the far better side so its not unreasonable for Sheens to be asked whether certain conditions eg. the weather may improve England's chances. He's batted that back with a reasoned response and refused to take the Aussie media's bait to 'get his excuse in 1st' and we still slag him off for 'whinging'!
Incidentally, note Sheen's didn't suggest wet weather would suit England more because we're more used to it, rather he suggested it may be seen as a benefit cos England have a big pack and traditionally wet weather is seen as favouring the stronger pack.

Canberra is slightly different to Sydney I am sure you would agree.
I said "It rains very hard for a short period in Australia, its either Tropical or Sub Tropical the rain is nearly all in the Summer months"
This was in relation to NSW and QLD.
Sydney is classed as Sub Tropical or Temperate depending on where you go.
Rockhampton is on the line of the Tropic of Capricorn.
