Nobody has argued that if players break the rules they shouldnt be punished. Simply that if when they break the rules, they are punished and that is part of the game and not to the detriment of it.

Why would anybody want Leigh in SL ? Certainly not me

The argument wasn't just that the players break rules , it was that coaches coach players to cheat ( that is what deliberate breaking of the rules is , don't pretend it isn't ) , and club owners are quite happy for players to cheat and for coaches to coach cheating

No. They dont. If a team 'cheats' then they will be penalised out of the game, will lose, and the coach would be fired. Coaches are will coach players to play right up to where the rules allow. If they step over it, the referee will punish them. This isnt to the detriment of our sport.

Deliberate breaking of the rules is cheating simple as , and cheating is detrimental to any sport , simple as

Players do it , coaches coach it , owners are happy to allow it , and fans are happy to watch it , as long as it is their club getting away with it , I don't recall the south stand shouting " forward " when Sinfield or Burrows throws a forward pass

I dont think i have ever seen any player, fan or coach defend deliberate cheating or say it shouldnt be punished.

People are happy, whether it is their team or another, to see a club who cheats punished.

People have different interpretations of the rules and apply different weightings to different offences but i have never heard anyone ever say that cheating shouldnt be punished because it is their team.

An update on Potters view of Wigan...

Anyone who thinks Wigan are 'cheating' is a moron, and/or doesn't understand what's going on.

Potter's comments and my post were about his allegations that Wigan deliberately employ tackling methods that they know are dangerous to the ball carrier. The excessive holding down is another issue and one for the referees to handle.

Not many of the goons on here have the intelligence to realise what Potter is saying. He is referring to the use of pressure points and joints that risk serious injury to the ball carrier. Not many of the responses have mentioned that issue but instead taken it as a "Wigan are better than us so they must be cheating" rant which it clearly wasn't.

And what about Potters post match comments Sadact?

Roughly translated as "My boys took one hell of a beating today". Not one mention of any dubious tackling techniques, simply because apart from last week they don't exist.

It just that most of us don't believe Wigan are worse than any other club. They all do it to a greater or lesser degree.

Well seeing as not one single Wigan player was even charged with any of those "questionable" tactics during the whole of last season, never mind banned - some people are obviously talking absolute crapola. Potter - I'm surprised at, you - not at all.

Interesting to see no mention of dubious tackling/chicken wing/wrestling in Potter's post match comments, just that they were well beaten.

There are two completely different issues here that most people on here, and Potter (probably deliberately)seem to be mixing up;

1) Defenders intentionally doing something that may cause serious injury to another player. As far as I know wigan haven't injured anyplayer with a 'chicken wing' in the history of the game. And until Lima was penalised twice ast week have had very few if any pens against them in the past. Other teams have had just as many if not more pens against them - the fact that wigan have now been penalised now makes it 'open season' against them.

Just like last season when it emerged that they were the first team to do something called 'wrestle' - despite the fact that coaches like Millward had been boasting about it years ago as though he was a genius for introducing it........

2) Defenders slowing the ptb down to alow their defence to get set. Which every team does - without exception.

I can't see what agenda Potter had other than a) try and influence the fans to get onto the ref to award pens against wigan b) directly influence the ref to give pens against wigan

He has a point I feel. How long are they going to let it go on for? The RFL must realise by now that Wigan are being coached to break every possible rule in an attempt to take advantage of the weakness of the referees in Super League. Do they wait for someone to lose a limb or potentially even their life before they act?



Again, absolutely spot on. Cooke clearly has me on an RSS feed. But again, like me, he is right. Young Sam is obsessed with cheating and it is totally to the detriment of his performances.



Again, very true. When are the RFL going to do something about it? It's not the blatant thuggery I'm concerned about, the referees and disciplinary committee can at least deal with those infractions to some degree as seen by the obvious bans handed out to the Kray twins. It's the constant attempts to hurt the ball carrier through forcing joints as Cooke mentions. This shows people with a lot of knowledge on the game have made the same observations.
