Has Awesome League been suggested yet?

You do realise that the "League" part of "Super League" is in reference to the competition being a league, and not to the code of the sport don't you? (ie Premier League in football).

And you do also realise there is a competition in the other code called "Super Rugby", so even if it was referring to the sport, it doesn't seem to bother them. That would also be a lot closer to "über mega rugby" than "Super League" as well.

The sport was founded as Northern Rugby (Football Union). It was changed for a reason. "Rugby" should really have been dropped from the second we decided we weren't just another governing body of the same sport. "Northern Football" or "Northern Rules Football" would have been better, and would have drawn less parallels with union in the long run. Would have needed changing in the future though to stop the stereotype and allow us to be seen as less of a regional sport and more of a world game.

"Global Rules Football" or shortened to "Globall". That's some marketing right there for night games!

Considering many people refer to the RFL as "The Rugby League" in an informal manner, and considering you're claiming that "Super League" is non-specific (non specific to what might I ask?), I don't see how you can see the latter as confusing but the former not.

We have as much right to the name rugby as the unionists,it really gets on my nerves when the media refers the RUWC as the rugby world cup when there are no RL teams playing in it.

Does it bother you when they talk about the football World Cup as well? Or football in general?

When I mention the word rugby to me it means RL.

I would imagine it would to say the majority of posters on here,why should we change our name when it means as much to us as the union lot.

Them union fans on Planet Rugby forum(especially Aussie ones)are going mad at RL for using the name rugby,just for that reason alone we should keep it.

That we have just as much right to the name "football" as we do "rugby"?
And that the term "football" was around well before "rugby", therefore we should really be more annoyed about losing that from our name than "rugby"?

I didn't say "rugby football". I said just football. We were football before we are rugby.

I call the sport whatever the person I'm talking to will understand easiest. If I'm talking to an Aussie, it's footie. A union fan, it's league. A neutral, rugby league. And a league fan, rugby.

The fact that I have to differentiate the name depending on who I'm talking to (a lot) shows that there's an issue.

The team I follow are called Hull FC. The F stands for Football



People can call the sport what they like at the end of the day. But it annoys me that people justify the use of the word "rugby" by saying it's a right we share with the other code and that they shouldn't be allowed to steal it. But these same people let the word "football" go, which is what was used before rugby.
Answer this question: why don't you care about the loss of the word "football" if that's the reason you don't want to lose "rugby"?

Personally, I think we've got the right game, "rugby" may be an anchor tying us to something we no longer need, and it affects our ability to market ourselves properly and differentiate ourselves to the competition.

It just seems too late to change now. It's a pity we let the name Northern Union go.

We're all codes of football, that is just a name of a team sport featuring two teams and a ball developed in this country. We've all the right technically to use it, but one game above all the others got so popular that we're going to have to admit defeat with that one. A rebranding is a tricky, risky issue, but in years to come it could at least provide us with a chance to branch out from the perception that we are merely a minor offshoot of a dull as dishwater scrumfest.

We're really the ultimate sport. Getting our message out is the important thing.
