So there must be at least you would assume a reasonable chance of him obtaining a visa!

you would have thought the NRL & cronulla representatives would have looked into his chances of beating his charges before banning & sacking him too...cos if he's found not guilty he can sue the both of them for for the aussie equivalent wrongful dismissal..

I'm not aware of the contractual obligations between Bird and Cronulla.

I think I read that his g'friend is saying it was an accident (she must have slipped and fell into his glass!) and so the whole dodgy affair of trying to get his mate to cop the charge is what they are hitting him with.

It wasn't just drink driving that carney was convicted for, he was also involved in a police persuit, where he failed to stop.

Not necessarily.

Pending court cases can be a reason to refuse a visa, or at least delay it until after the case is heard. Plus he will be assessed under the new points-based system which came in at the end of November. The fact that he is currently banned from the NRL may well exclude him under the 'established at the highest echelon of the sport' clause.

what are the implications of him firstly getting a visa as he is innocent till guilty etc, then being found guilty in court but not getting a custodial sentence.. will his visa become invalid due to his conviction ?

We have one of the best, if not the best pack in the League. Two decent half backs who can create chances. That leaves our backline a little short, but still good enough to create and finish chances off.

Hardly means our 'problems' as you so delicately put it on and off the field are solved.

Whilst I'd listen to what most Leeds fans had to say about the Bird signing, I find Hetherington's comments extremely time-consuming and frankly, boring. Bird isn't banned from playing in the NRL, Cronulla simply didn't want him playing for another club because they knew he'd have gone somewhere else.

It is simply a matter of which clubs decide to do what. Leeds stuck by Ryan Bailey, as did Bradford over Leon Pryce and as Saints probably will do know. The signing doesn't de-value or make the Super League lose appeal at all, because Greg Bird simply hasn't been convicted of anything.
