on Darwin, isnt it a fairly fast growing city. it should be able to have an NRL team eventually. and if the NRL were smart they would get in first like they did in the Gold coast.'"
the darwin / PNG idea would be brilliant
JB makes a fair point that WA and CC are the only genuine contenders atm though central queensland are soon launching a bid

no thanks! if a failing sydney team can't make it in a rl mad city like sydney they'll hav buckleys in a tough sporting environment like perth.
we want a wa club run by wa people that are in it for the long haul. we have already been shafted once by eastern states blow ins who cleared off when the going got tough.
I would like to see us act as a feeder for an nrl club for the next 2 years though as we continue to grow and move into the nsw cup.

Sharks will play 3 games on CC and 1 in Adelaide. They are deserting the shire one game at a time!
A bit of news on the WA Reds bid:

Quote WARL Board Annouces New Structure/Expansion
WARL BOARD ANNOUNCES NEW STRUCTURE/EXPANSION
At its meeting earlier this week the WARL Board confirmed a refining of its structure and the intention to expand the Board in light a future NRL bid according to WARL Chairman, Geoff Baldwin.
“Since I become Chairman of the WARL nine years ago the League has grown in numbers and we now have a substantial competition locally with more than three times the participants compared to back in 1999 – 2000, Mr Baldwin said.
“In addition to our local growth we have taken a pivotal role with the Affiliated States and have also entered a team into a home and away competition via Jim Beam (now Bundaberg Red) Cup.
“Naturally, with this significant expansion the work load has increased for everyone to the point where a complete restructure and expansion of the Board is critical to ensuring our local competition is given the focus it requires and to maximise our opportunities to re-enter a team in the NRL.
“In regards to an NRL bid it is imperative that we establish a dedicated and active steering committee for the purposes of strategic planning, fund raising, sponsorship coordination, events management and corporate/government liaison.
“In other words we need a committee of business people who fit the following criteria:
Passionate about Rugby League
Experienced with Rugby League at a higher level
Well connected in the local business community
Successful businesspeople who are willing to commit funding or to assist in raising funding and sponsorship.
Willing to work hard and long to ensure our chances of success are optimised at every step of the way.
“We have already begun assembling this committee and expect it to be up and running within the next couple of weeks.
“For me to continue in the role of Chairman of the WARL as well as focus on the ongoing viability of the Reds and an NRL bid there has needed to be some adjustment to the roles and responsibilities across the Board as well as an expansion of the Board.
“Our current WARL Directors have done a terrific job to this point but it is unreasonable to expect them to now take on even more work as we move towards an NRL franchise in the future.
“Having stated that, I am grateful to Mike Coleman who has committed to overseeing the role of Director – WARL Local Competition which will enable me to continue in the Chairman’s role knowing that our local game is in good hands.
“As we have stated from the start, anything we undertake must never threaten the local competition and must be approached with a focus on the expansion and strengthening of our game in Western Australia.
“With that in mind the Reds / NRL Steering Committee will report to the WARL Board at every step of the way and two members of the new committee will be invited onto the Board to ensure that connection and synergy.
“I consider this to be a turning point for Rugby League in Western Australia and I compel you to understand that it will not just happen without your support along the way.
“This is especially the case with support of the WA Reds right now in the Bundaberg Cup Competition.
“From that point of view we are well and truly under the microscope and any chance we have of succeeding with an NRL bid is dependent on attendances and support of the current Reds team.
“Pretty soon you will see our plan for the WA NRL bid unfold but meanwhile, it is important that you continue to support our local competition and it is critical you come along to our WA Reds games or better still, become a member today.

During the past week, that solution has emerged on the Central Coast. Following last night's historic resolution, Cronulla will now host five games over the next five years at Bluetongue Stadium, which offers teams a minimum $100,000 guarantee per match. At their present crowd average, the Sharks are losing about $25,000 a game at Toyota Stadium.
"We need to expand our brand and get into new markets to generate new revenue streams," Zappia said.

North Sydney Bears and Cronulla Sharks exchange barbs over Gosford move
If they think they can play five games and get 15,000 people, well it ain't going to happen. It is just destabilising rugby league in the area. As I said, they have stated this is purely a revenue-raising move."
North Sydney continue their push to start up a franchise playing out of Bluetongue Stadium. It is understood the Bears are close to announcing some corporate sponsorships.
"It's the same as the Northern Eagles. They played one game here a month and the Central Coast people voted with their feet and it all went downhill," Florimo said. "Everyone has recognised since day dot that this is a rugby league heartland area."
But Zappia was furious with Florimo's comments - saying Norths' concerns should be tossed aside given they aren't in the NRL.
"I find those comments disrespectful," he said.
"I find it astonishing that someone would make those comments when they aren't even part of the NRL."

What team could possibly relocate at right now besides the sharks?, so many areas which deserve / should have a team.
When Manly talk about relocating where are they thinking of going?

| JB if the sharks move permanantly to gosford, then perth will be in next time 100% with brisbane rather than fighting it out with them
the sharks shouldnt be allowed to use the area like that.
either move there full time now or die off.

NRL knocks back Sharks Gosford plan
THE NRL has knocked back a request from Cronulla for funding for the club to play five home games on the Central Coast from 2010.
An NRL statement said the league "is not prepared to embrace" the proposal, reportedly asking for $250,000-$350,000.
The NRL has $8 million on the table for any club prepared to make a permanent move to Bluetongue Stadium.
Thursday's decision shows the league is not prepared to fund a part-time move to the Coast.
"The partnership executive committee has only had the opportunity to look at Cronulla's proposal on a preliminary basis," NRL chief executive David Gallop said in the statement.
"It is not prepared to embrace the idea at this stage.

www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/s ... 66,00.html Great move for the future of the NRL. The team has to be there full time. If we put one there on part time basis and keep using the central coast league fans as 2nd rate people that should just accept and embrace what we give them, the NRL will lose its strong hold there. They want there own team and most of them are already full blown Bears fans waiting for the NRL to get them in there when the next TV deals are done. We must put the bears up there for the survival of the whole NRL along with a 4th Queensland team. We cant save the sharks and kill the league. Majority rules, so long sharks!

| You think the NRL can't survive with a CC team?
Where's the evidence that there are any Bears fans on the CC? In fact the Bears have done nothing in the last 10 years to have any affinity with the area. Why aren't they playing out of there now instead of letting teh Storm base a team there?
The NRL should give the Sharks some decent amount to repackage as the Southern Sharks and play 6 games in Adelaide and 6 games in Cronulla. Everyone wins then,
add Bears and Reds in 2013 and you basically have every major population centre (except greater Hobart) in the country represented by an NRL team. 2nd Brisbane and Wellington in 2018 and we have the perfect 20 team league. Incentive for a Sydney team to move to Adelaide permenantly after the Sharks 5 year deal.

| Perth needs to be in for there to be true expansion, Someone will have to relocate if there is to be anymore expansion otherwise it will probably be a second Brisbane team and CC. Who wants to see 1 team in 2 different places it doesnt make much sense. Sharks could take a gamble and go somewhere else all together.

with AFL going into gold coast, we need more queensland teams now so id go central coast and brisbane now, and perth wellington later.
of course if sharks go CC now, then its perth and brisbane next time round.

i have doubts about there being a brisbane team in the next expansion. if it was really in the pipeline for the next expansion then there would have been an official launch of a franchise bid by now would there not? also they would need 3-4 years to build a supporter base and do the ground work for a 2nd team there.

| The Secret plans the NRL doesn't want anyone to know about.
I have obtained a copy of a leaked document outlining the NRL's short term plan to tackle AFL, A League and Super 14.
I have it on good authority that they want more teams in Brisbane.
Relocations are high on the NRL agenda.
Secret notes obtained from the NRL state by 2013 the following teams will be in the comp:
1. West Brisbane Tigers
2. Brisbane Bulldogs
3. Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles
4. Nth Qld Cowboys
5. Central Qld Roosters
6. Central Coast Sharks
7. Gold Coast Titans
8. Melbourne Storm
9. Canberra Raiders
10. NZ Warriors
11. Perth Rabbitohs
12. Adelaide Saints
13. Brisbane Broncos
14. Newcastle Knights
15. Wellington Panthers
16. Riverina Eels
The Grand Final will be played at Suncorp Stadium 2 out of 3 years with the 3rd played at the MCG.
State of Origin will be played at Suncorp, MCG and Auckland every year.
All in all this will strengthen RL in Sydney and NSW, esp Western Sydney to fight the scourge of the Western Sydney AFL franchise.
IMO - this looks like the NRL is really going places. But seriously, I have heard whispers that the NRL is closely looking at the A league model, where most clubs will be scraped and new licenses dealt out, with Sydney 4, Qld 1, Central Coast 1, WA 1, with 2 others to be offered to the best other 2 bids( could be PNG or SA or another Qld team, but none in Sydney)
All the new bids and prospective licenses will only got to bidders with sound Finacial backing and that they must not affliate themselves with any current NRL teams in Sydney.
Only teams guaranteed a place, Brisbane, Nth Qld, Gold Coast, Newcastle, Melbourne, New Zealand and Penrith.
They believe this is the only way to decrease the number of teams in Sydney and keep the majority of fans, as they will follow a new team but will not follow another current team if their team folds or is ejected.
Believe it or not. Star League as proposed officially on Feb 6 1995
Twelve clubs, playing each other twice.
The Clubs are -
Brisbane
Sth Queensland
Newcastle
Perth
Auckland
Canberra
Illawarra
Sydney North
Sydney South
Sydney West
Sydney City
Adelaide
Melbourne
