| Quote ="Chorlton RL"In fact, if I remember rightly Trin' were nicknamed Dreadnaughts, not because of their fearlessness on the field, but because the team were mostly pit workers during WWII. They were christened that because if you're prepared to climb into a big black hole in the ground to dig while you leave your family at home where they might be bombed and you could potentially be trapped underground after a bomb strikes there must be very, very little that spooks you.
That to me is far more inspiring than a walking, furry pillow that wonders about by itself not really liking anything or anyone around it and has a face that looks like someones just farted!'"
You remember wrongly. The picture is from 1909.

| I thought so Slugger. Cheers for that. I think Dreadnaughts is a reference to the pits though.
That's a terrific picture! I also like the really old one with a banner in the background that says "Up t'Trin".

| Quote ="headhunter"Agreed, the only thing in favour of Rhinos and Bulls is the fact that they are bigger clubs. I think the majority of people in the country have probably heard of 'Leeds Rhinos' in some way even if they're not entirely sure who they are, so it has a little more identity than something like Wakefield Wildcats which nobody outside of RL has really heard of. I agree completely with your point about the lack of reference to the community or seemingly anything at all. Does anyone know how these names were originally chosen, and why there wasn't massive ridicule when they were adopted?'"
I imagine marketing teams or club boards came up with them. I know Wakey got their's through a competition in the Wakefield Express. Fans were asked to send suggestions in and then, I think, the club picked one.
I think generally there was much ridicule of these names on the terraces, but the game was dramatically changing at a very quick rate. The code was sold to a TV station, Super League was forced on us and mergers were also nearly enforced. A lot of things had happened that fans couldn't control. The names were just another element of inevitable modernisation. There were also a lot of clubs struggling for money. It was difficult to argue against monikers when you had clubs like Bradford and Keighley making a success of it.

In 1906 a revolutionary type of new battleship was launched called HMS dreadnought, it was so advanced that other navies copied it and all these new battleships became known as dreadnoughts (with old ships refered to as pre dreadnoughts).

| But at Bradford, there was a helluva lot of resistance to changing away from "Northern", it was just that there were also very many people who actually liked the "Bradford Bulls" identity too, and so I think it caught on because popular culture accepted it. Many of those against it then ahve come to accept it now and very few that I know of seem to truthfully want a return to "Northern".
I broadly agree the lists given of those that have caught on, and those that haven't. The reason I say ours is accepted in popular culture is that both we, and supporters of other teams, are just as likely to refer to us in conversation as "the Bulls" as they are to call us "Bratfud", and the same goes for the Rhinos.
Whereas the opposite is true for "Wildcats" (does [ianybody[/i use that, even in Wakey?).
I propose a "down the Club/Pub" test. At my local, someone wishing to know if I am attending the game is most likely to as me whether I'm "off to 't Bulls". Nobody will ever ask me if I am off to watch Bradford, or Bradford Bulls, or Northern, it is always 't Bulls".
I am led to believe that in Wakefield the word would be "Wakey", though I stand to be corrected. In Warrington I'm pretty sure it is "Wire" and never "Wolves". Again I don't claim to speak for the Wire fans though and would be interested to know.
Maybe the answer is whether the nickname does or does not catch on with the club's own fans first and foremost, as if it does, that will mean it is going to spread far and wide whereas if (like Wakey) even the fans never use the nickname then apart from kiddy marketing, it's a dead duck. And I'm not surprised if the Wildcats name came from a newspaper comp. What a way to pick an identity! I expect the "judges" had a precondition that it had to begin with a "W" and had to be some form of animal other than a Wolf, which pretty much fscked it right there. What other options? Weasels? Walruses or Whales must be out? Whippets - er no. Wombats? Not really. Wildebeest? Too far fetched. Worms? Nope.
As the name Wakefield effectively means "vigil field", being derived from the Old English "wacu" meaning vigil or wake, I reckon the Undertakers would have worked. An alternative translation for "wacu" is "festival" so maybe "Jokers".

| With respect to alternatives to Wildcats, I vaguely recall Titans and Trojans were also in the running, both infinitely better options than the one the club ended up with.

As far as I can see, Wolves tends to only be used in everyday conversation by people who don't really know much about them. The chants are all either 'Warrington' or 'Wire'.
I hate our crest as well. Nothing wrong with just the coat of arms of the town (or a variation thereon), with Warrington RLFC on it. In fact, I think every crest should have RFC or RLFC or FC somewhere on it (even if small).
I like Halifax's- simple, traditional, elegant.

| I don't like the Wildcats. It could be adopted as an official nickname, to keep the mascot and other marketing stuff, but I really don't like the way the club is trying to drop "Trinity". The club website calls the club Wakefield Wildcats, and I think it is only fan pressure that keeps the Trinity in.
For those non-Wakey fans, the club was formed by the Trinity church, who formed lots of sports teams as a way of keeping young men fit and active, with the rugby team turning out to be enduring team. The stained glass windows in the Trinity church were red and blue, hence the club colours. So if you lose Trinity, you are giving away more than just a name. It's an integral part of the club's history.
For me, it's just Wakefield Trinity.

Fits in quite well though with the original ' Chemics ' through to its logical conclusion ' Mutants ' , don't you think
I never use the Vikings ' moniker ' , although it is far from the worst , I'd happily see the end of the Centurions name , although a survey of sorts a couple of years ago showed that that was the name the younger generation now use , doubtful we'll ever hear a chant with it in it though

Ah! And now I see another t1t to make it four.
I think you should use the name [iThe Leigh Lobby Gobblers[/i, with a plate of lobby on your crest. I’m not sure what you’d do for a mascot, but you could use a scruffy tramp, with a big fat belly, and call him [iThe Lazy Lob[/i?
The only problem with that, is he would be indistinguishable from the rest of the LSV home crowd.
