Full Steam Ahead for WA League Campaign
The WA Rugby League is ready to take the next step in its campaign to become part of an expanded national competition.
It will open talks with the State Government next month, hoping to secure a $300,000 fighting fund loan to finance its bid for a side in the National Rugby League that is set to grow from 16 to 18 clubs in 2013 under a new television deal.
Perth has not had a professional rugby league team since the Super League Western Reds folded in 1997, but the WARL is armed with a business case study it believes presents solid arguments for a new NRL side.
It commissioned market researchers Synovate to prepare the report and WARL Bid project manager Ralph McManis said the WARL pleased with the outcome.
“There were certainly no surprises and many positives,” McManis said.
“We’ve done financial modelling on what we believe is needed for a national team and we are on course.”
The WARL bid has gathered strong support from within NRL ranks including chief executive David Gallop, who said earlier this year that Perth was a frontrunner in the race.
He said a new franchise would have to produce a $15-20 million a year turnover but McManis is confident they can achieve that target.
“We’ve punched the numbers and we believe we can jump through all the financial hoops,” McManis said.
“We believe it would be more than feasible otherwise we would not be proceeding.”
The report, that said a new side would pump $22 million a year into the WA economy, found:
- 38 per cent of the public support the NRL expansion into Perth
- 6 per cent of the public state they are likely to become members
- 31 per cent of 18-34 year-olds would attend a home game.
- 15 per cent of those surveyed follow the NRL
- 8 per cent were strong and passionate rugby league supporters.
But the report said that if the WARL was successful it would need to ignite an interest and passion in the game and build momentum and support among the public and business community.
McManis said he was encouraged by the number of 18-34 year-olds who would go to a game.
“That’s the next generation. Had the report come back and said the great bulk of support was over 50 then we’d have a problem.
“But when you know the next generation wants to come your way then that’s really good news,” he said.
“It’s also encouraging to see how many people would take up membership. One would think the possibility of 20,000 plus members down the track is not unrealistic.”
The three seasons of the Western Reds was clouded in controversy but McManis said lessons had been learnt.
“As far as the Western Reds are concerned they are history. They are confined to history. There’s nothing we can take from them,” he said.
The report says that rugby league trails rugby union by just 3 per cent in terms of interest, support and appeal in the metro area.

| I think it would be a success, currently I'm in Fremantle and have seen as many people wearing Rugby League clothing as AFL clothing.
Got speaking to a bloke who coaches down at South Fremantle Roosters and he said when the Reds were playing they had loads of amateur teams but with their demise came a shortfall in the numbers playing and with the emergence of the new franchise would be a dramatic rise. They get decent crowds when they stage NRL games here so I would say they would be a success, although they would need a couple of marquee signings to do so in their early years.
Thinking of moving here but would miss watching live RL, if they had a franchise here I would come for sure.

| because if its half empty it means its nearly time for a refill!
Back to the bid, we all have our fingers crossed that the WA Govt will stump up $300k to get the bid some real momentum. Can't do much at the moment as the bid isn't "official" as the NRL hasn't said it will expand or called for bids. At the moment the bid is being run by volunteers who are succesful businessmen in their own right so have limited time to put into it. Fingers crossed the NRL soon makes it official, the WA Govt gets behind it and the sports loving public of Perth give it the backing it needs.
Things are getting exciting!
(ps South Sydney can we have our millionaires back please!)

| Is it between the Bears and Perth for the franchise or are they looking at adding the 2?
If they choose Perth I'm moving here, thats the only downside to here is that theres no NRL nearby.

yeh only value of expanding will be to have an extra game to sell so it will be two or none imo.
Expressed interest in bids so far are:
CC Bears www.centralcoastbears.com.au
WA Reds www.waredsrugbyleague.com.au
Ipswich Jets no site
CQ ?? www.cqnrlbid.com.au
PNG ?? www.pngnrlbid.com
Bears are way in front but the niggling "keep Gosford for Cronulla" may be their only chance of not getting in, Reds would have to be next. Ipswich are newcomers so not much known about their bid. CQ and PNG have zero chance.

Too early if I am honest.
Whilst the turn out for the Kiwis v England game was great, the fortunes of Wellingtons soccer team, basketball team and both grade Union teams are not so good.
Phoenix had a crowd of sub 5k last weekend....Lions crowds were down 27% against 2009, Hurricanes down 20% on 2009 and the basketball team, that won last years championship, is in dire straits with no sponsor for the coming season...they may have to pull out.......the netball lot were terrible again and the only way that they got people in was with free kids tickets....
The wellington Firebirds Cricket franchise is in even worse condition.....less than 2,000 turn up for the 20/20 games...and nobody bothers with the 50 over games.
Funny city Wellington. They have a state of the art stadium 5 minutes walk from the CBD. It has loads of sport going on...yet the only 2 things assured to sell out are the 7's and the annual AB's game......the 7's when nobody watches the rugby....the AB's when you need to be well connected to get a ticket.
If the NRL are interested and Wellington RL can find a backer, then I would get the Warriors down 3 or 4 times over the next 2 years to test the water........I would also wait and see how the new national 7 Zone Comp continues.

Can't help but think that the three main things to effect who gets in IF they expand will be TV Deal, Independent Commission and what the other clubs want to happen.

Realistic view. Based on fact and actual attendances over the last year...........I have no doubt that the nrl will have a second NZ team.....just pointing out the facts as they are now.
Don't be such an idiot old dear.......you know who I work for......I told you in a reply to one of your many pm's.......I get paid when the 2nd team arrive. Its my job to know what the lie of the land is.......not rely on wishful thinking
