Jordan Rapana from Canberra is one of the form wingers of the NRL and will probably get a game too.

| That's a great try scoring record. And I'm sorry to bring this up, but to compare with Les you'd have to either add on all tries which were chalked off due to him hitting the corner flag, or remove from Solamona all tries where he hit the corner flag first in order to compare like with like.
Solamona definitely has the record from when that rule was brought in though.

While we're at it should we chalk off all the tries scored after a 40/20? And don't forget the free play.

Why on earth do you feel the corner flag is beside the 40m or 20m line? Most people with a basic numeracy level would realise the corner flag is 40m away or 20m away from those lines. Anyway....
Wingers generally score in the corner. Changing the status of the corner flag will have a direct impact on tries scored and tries ruled out by wingers (Les & Denny). Mags' tries generally were support tries down the middle, but if he had some chalked off in the corner, then it's not comparing like with like.

I think you miss his point, which is that the 40/20 rule was not introduced until after Vainikolo set the previous record. Therefore, your rationale means that any tries Solomona has scored following a 40-20 should not be counted as Vainikolo wouldn't have had the opportunity to score these.
However, given that we have kicked two 40-20s all season and neither have resulted in tries, it's pretty irrelevant.

| Great achievement.
Let's take it into account that back then Bradford was most likely well over the cap.
They had more money to play with and played in a less competitive league.
Let's back check all tries that could of come off forward passes.
Any shoulder chargers used were Bradford opposition lost the ball resulting in a try.
Yawn.
He's broke the record and done it pretty easily on the back of wonderful coaching to a bunch of players not regarded as world beaters who play for each other.
The achievement is outstanding.

the only reason I brought it up was that it's a single variable. Scoring a try, in the corner, is the corner flag in play or not? All the other straw men been raised are multiple variables - how many pairs of hands does the ball go through after a 40:20? . Nice attempt to obscure the point and avoid answering it dispassionately but, as you say, irrelevant.

What about the try/no try debacle? Without that stupid rule, there is no way Denny would have been awarded his try against Salford! It would have been disallowed in Vainikolo's day.

| Statistical spats aside - it's a fantastic achievement from a player who seems to have Gelling-esque levels of enjoyment in playing his sport.
Powell has done an amazing job with that squad - Solomona reaps the rewards of some genuinely thrilling attacking play.

I think the point is is that changing the corner flag rule was far more significant re try scoring than a marketing ploy in 1996. Why can't we simply refer to it as rugby league records, 1895 to the present day. If Sky want to extend their marketing to have everyone believe records began only when they took over the sport then let them, fans, like those in this thread, don't have to follow suit do they?

Quite, I'm sure that with better pitches, lighter boots and ball, no corner flag rule and 40/20s (sigh) he would have quite literally got a ton of tries. to get that many way back when should probably go down as one of the greatest individual seasons scoring feats in ANY sport, it's absolutely phenomenal.
As for the greatest RL try scorer, one of Brian Bevan's career regrets was not beating Rosenfeld's record despite scoring 796 of the buggers falling 8 short in all matches in 52-53.
Here's some footage of a 40 year Bevan showing a sprightly Clive Sullivan a clean pair of heels in a 7 a side comp in 1964
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ou2GX4ee88
As for Denny's try scoring, excellent record but St.John Ellis has the Cas try scoring record with 40 in the 90s though that was probably from more matches.

Singe scored 40 from 41 games including a hat trick against the touring Kiwi side. Denny is on 39 from 28 games.

I know SJE had played more games, as I said, he holds the record at that point in time, the appearancs don't really mean much in my eyes for one season comparisons, how much ball a player gets, how a team plays etc all changes from one season to the next. Or are you basically saying Solamona is a better scoring winger by putting up theappearances as you've done, if so why not just say.

| Yes - that is what I am saying. For the hard of thinking:-
Solomona's strike rate is 1.39
St John Ellis strike rate was 0.97

It sounds like there could be a bit of truth in this latest rumour. I hope he stays at Tigers but if that type of money is offered from RU I cannot see us turning it down. Wingers don't fetch anything near that amount and knowing Cas - they will snap their hands off.

Maybe so for that sort of cash, saw other posts saying Carney has been around a lot and him and Massey were seen joking together. Maybe something in that if Salford were to go down? Sure Powell would do like he did with Chase and ask the players opinions first

| 300k is a huge amount of cash for a winger and it would be difficult to resist.
Although Solomona has been sensational for Cas, many of his opportunities come from the service that he's had form Gale and Dorn and has as much to do with Castleford's attacking shape and Solomona himself.
Mind you, I'd be happy to see the back of him, he's scored 5 tries against us this season alone so good riddance !
Seriously though, the guy has pace to burn and certainly knows where the try line is but, 300k !!
