Half a dozen good International games vs fifty major honours - domestic and non-domestic (3 x WCC Final wins, one of which tore Brisbane apart on their own ground in front of over 50,000).
Yeah, course you did.

Absolutely, I did.
International RL is far more important than domestic club games IMO, and it also separates world class players from the more ordinary domestic players. In this particular example, it distinguishes world class players like Schofield from domestic club class players like Edwards who failed to shine at international level because they were only domestic club class players.

| I don't think anyone is disputing that Edwards wasn't a great player who won trophy after trophy.
But Schofield was better and performed home, Oz and at International level

| To those blinkered Wigoon fans who harp on about Edwards far greater haul of domestic honours than Schofield, does that mean that the contributions of by the likes of Hanley, Gregory, Goodway, etc (all vastly better players) have been over rated then, because Edwards genius apparently won them?
As a non Wigan fan the players I feared when facing them never included Edwards or the thought that he'd rip us to bits. Sure he would make hay if his pack was well on top but in the rare close games it was others that pulled them through.
You really don't know how unrespected Edwards is in Australia. Being a leading British half back (which he undoubtedly was) does not automatically rank anyone in the ARL/NRL. Indeed he found his level there pretty quickly, back up on a good team and possibly good enough to start with side near the bottom of the table.
If anything Schofield's ability to shine in some poor teams is another plus for him.

| Edwards was a professional player who stood on the shoulders of giants.
This was shown most plainly in is abject failure to make an impression down under, when he jointed Balmain. This was in marked contrast to other British halves of the time such as Gregory, Myler & Schofield.
So for me there is no contest.
Schofield was by far the better player.
NB: i would say that Edwards was the more professional.

Indeed.
And Edwards couldn't even dislodge this bloke from the Balmain halfback spot.
Who?
Exactly!

| I would put Edwards on a par with Danny McGuire in terms of ability where as Schofield is more like Jonathan Thurston. The difference between a good half back and a great half back.

| Have a look on that video sharing site at Schofield playing for GB. He was a world class centre (scored two amazing tries against Aus aged 18/19 and later 4 in a game vs NZ) who became a world class stand off (look for the 33-10 win vs Aus for his best game there). Look up Edwards' international highlights and his most memorable effort was getting sent off for trying to take off Clyde's head - we turned round and produced a great defensive effort with 12 men to win.
If I was building a SL team I'd probably pick Edwards as someone to build it around, but Schofield (who at Leeds sometimes seemed to spend entire games looking for the big intercept rather than just play the game) was by far the more talented player.

| Quote ="Exeter Rhino"Edwards didn't come close to making the impact Schofield (not to mention Hanley and a few others) did in Australia. Ask any Australian from that era who was better. Edwards may have won more trophies, but then again Ian Kirke has won more pots than Sam Burgess.
What Schofield has or hasn't become since being a player shouldn't have any bearing on this debate, but sadly I fear it will - as will the fact that Edwards played in the all-conquering Wigan team of the early 90s.
FWIW the OP needs to learn how to spell the names of both players'"
Why would anyone need to ask Australians??? Schofield was a brilliant attacking player but had a pants all round game. His defence was amateur standard. He also was subject to being a dressing room trouble maker. Edwards was also a brilliant attacking player and in addition, had superb defensive skills, with a brilliant at times, all round game. No competition really, Edwards by a fair distance.

I can answer that. The answer is NONE!
However...
<flat-track bully mode on>
Edwards did score 17 tries against France which is 3 more than Schofield did.

I wish you would stop trying to judge a players entire career by how many tries they scored
But, if you insist on doing it, Garry Schofield scored 31 tries for Great Britain in 46 appearances (67% ratio) while Wally Lewis scored 11 tries in 33 appearances (33%) and Andrew Johns 7 tries in 24 appearances (29%) for Australia
By your method, Schofield was clearly a better player than either Lewis or Johns

How many Tries did he score against Australia?
I will sum up this thread, he was poop at Test level and only looked ok in the Wigan team that was stacked with stars.'"
honestly how many times did you watch him play for wigan? youtube doesn't count.
and to ask how many tries did he score against australia as a point to prove who is better is just ridiculous! this is like asking who was better cunningham or newton? for the majority of people it will be cunningham but terry actually won against the aussies unlike cunningham or roby (correct me if i am wrong not sure about cunningham) so there for newton must be better :S? you know the aussies aren't all ways the bench mark to see if a player is good or not.
maybe edwards didnt like hes time in aus? or even didnt enjoy hes time at the tigers?
some peoples ignorance is terrible but yours is horrendous!
edwards had a proffesional attituded through out hes career and in hes personal life by the looks of it to compare the two men is stupid anyway. they was different type of players and played different roles for there teams. its like asking who is the better player between kevin sinfield or tim smith (for EVERYBODY sinfield is the better player but tim smith is more talented).
for people on this board to actually try and rubbish edwards shows they still haven't gotten over the sour grapes of watching wigan win everything for so long and Edwards was a massive part of it!
