farcical situation with the lights and the game was very close to being abandoned i heard!

Nothing to do with the ball, it's the hands. Theoretically the ball 'goes forward' numerous times during a game when it's passed. Doesn't mean it's a forward pass.

Relative to the ground, that ball will have gone forwards.
