Guess the only logic tactic-wise was that if he could feed off great centre passes he would score everytime, but obviously theory and practice are two different things.
Maybe if Cas had signed Gidley too it would have worked.

There was (allegedly) some interest from Widnes, I think.


Essentially, our take on the trial (iirc) was he'd done well, better than anyone expected, but ATEOTD, he was 30, needed bringing up to speed on basics, before we could even think of getting up to SL level, and we didn't have the time or money to invest in that when we had a good crop of youngsters coming through.

Probably a fair assessment, but then with that being the case it was always going to be a fruitless 'project' wasn't it really (apart from the publicity). If anything I reckon it would have been bad for morale having him wear a Cas shirt (if only for a reserve game or two) when some local kids would jump at the chance to do so.
Not having a go though because it's not the first time such a thing has been tried (e.g. read somewhere before Daley Thompson had a brief go at football!
