Very interesting article.
I wish he'd given his solution though, it was just missing the EastEnders dum, dums at the end.
There is no doubt that trying to increase attendances is a very hard slog and the only "quick" way of doing something is to have some on field success.
It's no coincidence that those clubs that have won most in recent years have the best attendances, although KR did exceptionally well with numbers when they dropped to the Championship and in spite of their empty trophy cabinet, continue to get plenty through the turnstiles.

| Quote ="SaleSlim"To be fair to London, if they're averaging say 1000 home fans per match then taking 10% of their fans to Salford last week was a pretty decent effort. I'm a season ticket holder at Salford City FC (yes, the plastic club before anyone points it out...
) and for long distance trips (London & further south) we've been averaging around 100-150 and that's based on an average of around 2500 home fans. For "derbies" like Fylde, Halifax & Wrexham we took around 400-450. Those coaches are heavily subsidised by the club though and even for the longest trips we only have to fork out £15 (Dover is near on 600 mile round trip).
For Salford Rugby, we took in the region of 1500 to Huddersfield for the first game on a Friday night. Bearing in mind we have a core support of maybe 3000 that either means we have a lot of hard-core fans or we have a lot of people that will turn up for a few beers and a trip out 4 or 5 times a season when it's a local derby! I'd imagine for Wigan and Wire away we'll take 1000 or so which based on % of fans that's pretty decent effort. Will Wigan and Leeds be bringing a third of their average home gate (4k or so) to the AJ Bell?'"
1500 to Huddersfield ha ha ha.
Keep off those dodgy tablets sunshine.

I am not gloating. I am just stating a fact.
It is very sad. The club has a relatively new stadium. It is near a major city. If it was in healthy condition it should be drawing at least 7-8,000 per game and thereby at least breaking even.
Catalans Dragon by contrast, in a much smaller urban environment, regularly draws 8-9,000 fans to home games. Catalans in its pre-professional existence, before Super League, drew 1,000-1,500 per game. Toulouse now draws 1,500 French fans, plus visiting fans, and could be expected to emulate Catalans Super League attendances if it was promoted to Super League. Salford is also dwarfed in its fan base by the highly successful nearby clubs at Wigan, St. Helens and Warrington.
What this suggests is that Salford, despite over a century in existence, has lost its loyal fan base of years gone by and is destined to collapse for lack of financial viability.

You assume a lot here Bazza.
Firstly, Catalans draw their home fans from an extensive region and a certain number would follow toulouse if they were in SL, thus diluting the catalan crowds.
Secondly, Catalans are the only game in town, given the crapness of the local union side of late.......a resurgence of the union lot would again impact on Catalans crowd.
Then there is the impact of the Challenge cup victory........pretty much SFA in terms of a long term boost, the same as London and Sheffield getting to the CC Final......
Then in terms of Salford. Arguably 2 of the top 10 soccer sides in the country play on their manor.....they do struggle and you trolling does have a valid point, but given the region of France where your 2 darlings play is full of in-bred french farmers who acceded to the nazis in return for a free ride in 1940, I'd steer clear of slagging off english sides whilst alluding to them being replaced by either a french side who have been beaten twice already this year, or another side from Manchester who ply some of their home games in Canada.....

But look closer and last years game was on a Thursday night mid season compared to a Friday home season opener. 500-600 more people therefore isn’t really impressive and taking in the above factors I would say in reality it’s not an improvement on last year'"
Probably true but if the Leeds following had been even remotely close to the one Wigan will take to Headingly in the return fixture it would have been the 2nd highest attendance so far. The first being Saints when they played..... Wigan.
It's all a matter of perspective really. Ateotd it was an increase on the corresponding fixture last season. With a 20,000+ crowd due this weekend I think Wigan are the least of Superleague's problems.

| Well the situation would get better very quickly if the long-promised Metrolink line ever gets built...
Then Salford need to market it more - starting with the crowds that Sale Sharks get.
Having said all of which Salford have taken a prudent financial approach (IIRC they don't spend anywhere near the salary cap) and have done OK over the last 12 months.

Just a couple of points here jeannie, first of all your not stating a fact, just an opinion.
Secondly I see what you've done here, this thread is about your opinion of Salford and it's alleged financial difficulties and has nothing to do with catalans and Toulouse, but once again you have managed to turn this into another opportunity to spout your rhetoric about 2 ordinary mid table teams in their respective leagues.

This weekend’s game is irrelevant to SL and it’s problems as it’s just a one off fixture that doesn’t hold any baring on the 29 Rounds of regular season action. Wigan were averaging 15/16k 7/8 years ago and getting 17/18k for the Leeds home fixture.
No club has seen worst drops in attendance than Wigan over their last few years so actually yes Wigan are indicative of SL’s problems.

They don't announce away fans numbers but think it was around 1,000 give or take a few, good turnout.

| I AM A London fan who attended last Sundays game at the AJ Bell. We drove up leaving at 7.30 am. We got home at midnight. Okay, we stopped to eat both on the way up and on the way back, but it was over 500 miles for us and I would say it cost us over there hundred pounds for the day for the four of us.
Next weekend we are off to Hull, same again, but then it is what we do on a Sunday.
I might also add, I drive 140 mile round trip to a home game.

| We have always struggled with money, even under wiky (chairman before Koukash). The SAS meeting was horrible, we needed to raise 600,000 in 6 weeks then koukash stepped in. Think the council have helped us out a lot paying our rent for the ground (when that stops i will worry). Thing that annoys me was the likes of koukash, saying hes leaving because the fans wasnt backing him (many reason why the fans didn't back him) As for crowds, we have proven in semi final cup games and bank holidays that we can have a good crowd, success bring crowd in not a good run of games. Also marketing at salford apart from this year have been terrible

That’s a load of rubbish. Look at cas. Not had any success nor will they with a smaller catchment area than Salford yet still have much higher crowds
