|
Don't know if anyone has reported these comments by our Chief Executive but I was told several times last year that Adam was on the brink of running out of the kind of money needed to keep us going (thus the regular hand ringing of yours truly on here) this seems to bear out that situation and how close we got to being in trouble. Here Myler has credited our new owners with saving the ailing club.
"The staff have more confidence in what they can deliver because they've got assurances that we are safe as a club," he said.
"The reality is we could have been Salford. That's as harsh as it was going to get.
"We could have been in Salford's situation right now. We're not and are very thankful for Andrew and David.
"We all need to be better as a club and a business. I think we're on the right path again now which is a relief and an exciting prospect."[/quote:16tdrcoj]
I'm assuming Wilf, that you had more information than most of us on here about our precarious position last year (finger on the pulse as always). For those of us a little more on the outside it's difficult to escape the feeling that we sailed very close to hitting the iceberg and possibly sinking quicker than the Titanic with all hands on deck.
It really does look as if we have been rescued from the brink of the abyss, reading Myler's comments today. No wonder Adam has looked exhausted these past couple of years.
Whatever mistakes he may have made during his tenure, I have a feeling that if the full story of the recent past years ever comes out we will all appreciate his efforts and what he did for the club whilst in charge.

|
More from Steve Mascord
HULL FC CEO Richie Myler hosted a media briefing at the club's training base today.
OBJECTIVES:[quote:1l2k6ug8] "I just want us to be proud of this club again - everybody. And I want to have the respect of our opponents.[/quote:1l2k6ug8]
"Success is getting this club back to a consistently high performing level.
"I want a competitive team. I'm not saying we have to win every week. I don't think anybody wants to come to Hull and see a 50-0 drubbing.
"And I want to see smiles on faces ... if we can finish in a respectable position in the league and win as many games as we can, that's a success[/quote:1l2k6ug8]
Don't know about anyone else on here, but these words from Myler essentially sum up my hopes for the coming months. No-one is expecting to be frantically buying tickets for Old Trafford come October, but what we are looking for is commitment, desire, work rate and, most of all, pride in the shirt, the club and indeed themselves in how they conduct their business each week. If they can achieve even that, it will go a long way to getting the core supporter base back onside after the horror show of 2024.
I get the feeling, reading Myler's words today, that as a club we had become a standing joke last year throughout SL, virtually dismissed as even the vaguest of threats to anyone (coming within a hair's breadth of losing to London three times hardly altered anyone's perception of what a basket case the club had degenerated to). It is imperative that we start to regain a degree of respect within the game right from the off, and show people that we are once more a serious proposition and we are here to compete as a basic requirement if we are to make any progress from our very low starting base.
As always, the proof is in the pudding as they say. Ultimately it's results that matter in the end, but Myler's quotes show that everyone connected with the club is acutely aware of the enormous task ahead of us, but everyone seems to have rolled their sleeves up and are already getting stuck in. As (long-suffering!) fans we need to do the same.
With Hull Fc, you're either in or you're not. It would seem that, even after enduring the worst season that any of us have ever witnessed (by some margin as well), most of us are still in for the ride. I still think the coming months may be a hard watch at times, but I am more optimistic than we have reached and passed the bottom of the curve than I would ever have thought possible when last season ended, so we have to be thankful for at least that.
There will be ups, there will be downs, we'll fight and argue on this board as we always do on here!!, but that's what comes with supporting one of life's most bizarre, perplexing, frustrating, unfathomable clubs, they always have been and I suspect Hull Fc always will be!!
(PS I'm in full-on Wilf disciple mode tonight, hence the wordy missives!! ).

Well I was certainly availed of quite a few things and certainly was scared of what could happen. Suffice to say that thank goodness for Adam during that time, because despite what a lot said about him on here, for months it was debatable whether his health or his money would run out first, but I can honestly say that he stuck at it because he got the heritage stuff and the love there was for the club across the community and that was in the end, along with the desire to leave it all it good hands, what kept him going.
Some will always refuse to believe all that and just say he was a chancer who knew nothing of Rugby league but who cares, he gave some of us the best day of our lives and the FC live on. If the new guys care half as much we'll be fine.
PS Laidlaw and Charles injured

If anyone doubted the need to get behind the new owners and Myler here is further proof that they are all going for it on our behalf. It's early days but our new CEO seems to have plenty of time to talk to us and is saying a lot of interesting and enlightening stuff. Roll On Cas.

This isn't the same as saying he's going to be as good but I think there are glimpses of Keiron Cunningham with this guy.

Dread to think if Grix and Smith were still here. We'd probably be running with Cator and Fash at 9.
Needs to work on his defence, but he's a genuine threat from 9. An upside to Abdull getting released is Balmforth will probably be the 14 instead of Cust

Great news.
I think this could be the biggest blessing of Abdull leaving. Balmforth may have been stuck behind Bourouh and Cust and been swayed to move somewhere else. Hopefully now be kicks on and becomes our hooker for years to come.

That's great news on Balmforth, sounds like he's really put the effort in bought in to the new regime and coaching under Cartwright and impressed in pre season. Hopefully the promise he's shown will be nurtured under a quality Coach like JC and he will fulfill his potential.

Said the same when he broke through - that acceleration and power from a standing start was reminiscent of KC. However, this pre season, Balmforth has definitely trimmed up - be interesting to see how that affects his game

It could be that the way Balmforth seems to have gone in training, impressing JC may well have been a pivotal part in the clubs decision re Abdull. If both Balmforth & Bourouh have shown up well in pre season hopefully it shows the club are genuinely prepared to back the young lads coming through.
Also credit to Balmforth for backing himself and putting in the effort.

That'll do for me Richie and I think a lot of fans will agree.

Great news to get Balmforth signed up long term, he can now concentrate on his game. Some improvements needed of course but he's got a big future.
Thankfully an end to all the rumours of him leaving that have been flying about for a couple of seasons.

| Any rumours or news re a half back?
We've only got Cust and Sezer as senior players.
Below that is Kemp and Charles, the latter injured currently.
Not enough for the coming season I don't think

| Good news on balmforth. He's definitely a talent, just needs (needed) the fitness and concentration levels.
I think that the ability to sign players from other clubs in the final year of their contracts will certainly change recruitment and retention stances at clubs and we will probably see instances of it backfiring but it makes things interesting

| Good re-signing. Needs to work on a few things, but looks like he’ll have the time and opportunity now.
The Rovers trolls masquerading as Hull fans got this one wrong. Again.
Myler seems very switched on when it comes to recruitment and retention.

He is similar style and if he is half as good then we have a great player. One area holding him back was his fitness which he seemed to have worked on.
Really pleased he had signed and a long deal too.
One real positive of not getting Sneyd would be the gametome it should give him at the start of the year.

Probably something the club are looking at, but in reality there isn't likely to be anyone available and I'd rather wait tham sign a Reynolds or Richardson.

Ashworth needs a big start to the season and stay injury free, showed what a good player he can be, but that's no good if he is sat in the stands for 50% of the games. Signed by Smith and Clarke so probably a decent salary. Hopefully proves his value.
Think Wainhouse will debut this year and sign a long term deal too.

Agree re Ashworth but at the same time there's a real shortage of decent British front rowers, we seem to struggle to produce big forwards whereas the likes of Wigan and St's have them in abundance. Hopefully Ashworth will have a big start to the year and stay fit.

I posted on the pre season thread about Ashworth. Had a fantastic pre-season by all accounts. Hopefully will stand him in good stead for the season.
