Josh Morris is out for several weeks, he was diagnosed with a posterior cruciate ligament injury but still got up and run down Greg Inglis as he surged through the line.

| Both Morris brothers are out for Origin 2 and Brett is out for the series.
Billy Slater and Cam Smith are doubtful for Origin 2, Slater more than Smith, while Cooper Cronk is gone for the series.

No they're not. Advertisers pay the money as it's the only terms of reference they have.
OzTam works by ONLY 3,500 households in the whole of Australia that have a box to press every time they turn the telly over and who it the home turns over. That's it, then they multiply it and come to the figure. ALso a programme is registered as being watched if it on for a few minutes. Think about that from the over 150 mins on telly the other night.
It's not accurate, it's an average.

Don't shoot the messenger purely because you don't like what's being said. 1 in 5 people in Australia watched it live. Oh please.

That is the same method that all figures like these are based on.
Its a broad based number of viewers and they extrapolate the figures.
All Political Polls are done in the same way.
Do you think they can ask the 4 million viewers what they were watching and they all say "yes we were watching"?
Sponsors take the Oztam figures realistic enough to base their financial investments on.
That should be enough.

| It's mathematics. Sample and statistics.
"Only" 3500? If distributed across demographics randomly, such a sample size is extremely reliable when extrapolated. As I said, the error margins are within a few percent, at most. They would often be one perfect off reality.
Don't like it? Doesn't suit your own opinion? You had better challenge the foundations of mathematics then. Good luck. A Nobel Prize awaits.

I would love to hear your justification (regression analysis) to how 3500 makes a good sample size of what 20,000,000
I can't be bothered to number crunch, but true extrapolation probably requires somewhere between 10-15k to be within 12sigma limits as claimed. 3k is more than enough to get to 6sigma standard though

State of Origin is what it is.....a brutal contest that interests more Aussie sports fans than usual because it's on a Wednesday Night......and advertisers because it delivers those sports fans. 4 Billion ( )4 million or 400k.....it's worth what the advertisers and TV companies are willing to pay for it.

Is a much more important (and better) way about thinking about it
We can use "mathematics" (it's actually statistics, and thus would win a fields prize medal not a Nobel prize and would require disproving some pretty axiomatic statistacal theory!) all we like, but any show, sport, rugby or otherwise is as successful as companies are willing to pay for it. The tv company's won't get that figure wrong, even when ofcom do

3,500 homes in AUSTRALIA.
Yet the last census shows that there are 1,720,333 private dwellings in the greater Sydney region alone.
As I said, it's the way it is. It's what they have. If you believe that 1 in 5 people in Australia watched it. Then that's up to you. Good luck with that. Just also remember that in those 3,500 Oztam homes, you only need to be on a channel for several minutes and not a whole programme to be regarded as having viewed it. So they can give far reaching, roughly based averages to advertisers. And as shown previously Oztam say they are ESTIMATES. Yet the journalists version doesn't point that out.
State of Origin I was a ratings winner for the NRL with the game posting a record audience for an opening game of the series as 4.053 million viewers tuned in around Australia.

| I've always said its bullox. 500 boxes in Perth for 2mill. When you get to small numbers it is nonsense. For example according to oztam NRL rates around 25k a game on Friday night in Perth. Now one box equals about 4000 people. I know at least 20 households of my friends and family who watch NRL and don't have a box. If just half of them happened to be chosen NRL ratings would be over doubled.
It might be more accurate for larger samples but in states like WA it isn't close IMO.

Point of Order.
90k in NZ and no other accountable ratings anywhere, so it was watched by 4 million in Australia but nowhere else was it watched by anything like "millions".....Premier TV still only have 6k in the UK.......it's unlikely it was seen "live" by more than 5 million globally.

| I guess some we are attempting to talk the game up and report the great ratings as a positive thing.
It seems its all a load of rubbish based on dodgy figures by a corrupt auditor owned by the TV channels.
Rugby League fans are their own worst enemy.
I am not sure why Gutterfax posts here beyond being vindictive about not getting a Job with the English Rugby League some time ago, and living in a backwater that no fans in Australia really cares about.
Rooster Booster has a Job in the NRL and I am not sure if its Jeans description of water carrier for the Newtown Jets but he never seems happy and takes every opportunity to lay the boot into his Employers/League/Country of residence.
How can that be a healthy outlook with fans like these?

Ok, fair enough.
Do you account for 3500 to be the number representing households, rather than individuals? Where you could safely assume the average household contains at least 2 people?

Average household in Australia ~ 2.6 still isn't close enough to get within the 98-99% sigma level - but as I say, still more than enough to get into the 98-69% standard , which is all that really matters with statistics!
That's not to say these still aren't great (projected ) figures for origin I - long may it continue...

His non-specific credentials have no bearing on his point of view regarding tv ratings collation. As for my role in "your comments".....either get a room or PM him if you want privacy.......in open water you are fair game and your antagonistic approach is there for all to see. So speaks an expert!
