It wasn't that clever.
A clever person would [unever[/u have used a semicolon where an apostrophe is clearly the correct punctuation mark to use when you are indicating the omission of one or more letters or a grammatical case used to indicate a relationship of possession.

| I love the attitude of, well he isn't doing anything for us, so him.
The fact that you hate union so much is also hillarious. If you actually were open to the idea of being able to watch both codes without prejudice, you might find yourself with more supporters. But instead you seem to enjoy insulting Union as often as possible. Pssst, heads up, Union fans couldn't give a toss whether you like them or not. The sport is doing just fine without you, could you say league is doing the same.

HE could have said. well I play the toughest sport in the world, imagine AF without pads, very few rests and constant hitting. He could have talked the game up in a way the Americans would have been interested in, even let the show know before hand so they could have had a compilation clips of big RL hits. I am pretty sure the audience would have been intrigued to know that a gay man plays the hardest game in the world, expelling many myths about gay men. What did he talk about?'"
So, here's how it goes. A professional in a minority sport, one not played to any extent in the USA, is invited onto a chat programme hosted by a big US TV star, a gay female, and asked to talk about his experiences coming out as gay. So Thomas says ' no way - I'll only come on US TV if I'm allowed to spend at least half my time promoting Rugby League'.
I'm sure Ellen's producers would have gone for that in a flash.

| Quote ="sally cinnamon"I expect its because Mickey Rourke is playing him in a new film. The Americans will treat this as a real curiosity, actually over here in the media I think this whole gay business is being overhyped, I don't know anyone who actually gives one about Thomas being gay, the real prejudice Thomas was likely to receive in RL is because he literally "played for the other code", so we all assumed he was a pansy boy who couldn't tackle, run or pass. Even at 35 he showed that some of those prejudices are a load of rubbish and he was easily able to handle himself in RL, he acquitted himself in RL far better than most of the recent RL converts to RU have done.
I remember when John Amaechi played basketball in the NBA (he's an English guy from Stockport), he ruffled some feathers there because he didn't fit the mould of their typical black basketball player who was supposed to play the role of a wannabe rapper, get in the odd scrape with the law, sound dumb, play ball and accept his paycheque. He turned down a massive contract from LA Lakers to stay with Orlando Magic because he wanted to stay loyal to the Magic for having faith in him (probably the biggest financial incentive ever turned down in the history of sport, he rejected a $17million deal to stay on a fairly modest contract at the Magic), he also turned out to be an outspoken intellectual with a PhD in Psychology and started speaking out against US foreign policy, and then came out as gay....this did not go down well in redneck America! A film on Amaechi's life would be great, they should cast Denzil Washington as him....'"
Just a pity that NBA is even more boring than wendyball.

i grew up watching both union and league
league got better, union got worse
and loads of rl fans hate ru.
there was a poll on another website and 50% of rl fans said they hated union
its only natural for many rl fans to hate union given the history
where i live, union isnt doing fine, its getting crushed
the way things are going the nrl is going to do a fair job of relegating union in australia and nz to an afterthought

I just can't understand why so many League fans are so accomodating with union. Those gits ban our game for 100yrs, try to wipe us out, then declare they are professional and all is forgiven? Not a chance, wipe em out I say, by fair means!!
Oh, did someone say Gareth Thomas is gay? How much cash is he going to make out of his sexuality?

This is again where you show yourself up as being a total idiot. The only people capapble of relegating union to an afterthought in New Zealand are the NZRFU themselves........you fail to comprehend that the only reason the Warriors get decent gates is because they are based in the part of the country with the highest Maori/Pacifica population.........Rugby Union is the National Sport of New Zealand...there are 5 S15 Teams.....14 ITM cup teams...the All Blacks are the most recognised Rugby Brand on the global stage.......but you continue to post bollox regarding League Dominating Union over here......you know nothing.
I meet once a month with the people who KNOW what the plan is.......I am fully aware of where RL is heading in NZ and it really has no interest in domination of a sport that is 500%+ bigger than it.
The NRL is doing nothing in NZ by the way......if they wanted to attract more fans and money to the game they would have the Wellington Orcas in NOW....but that would only go to highlight the lack of depth in their competition.........NZRL is a seperate organisation and I believe that with decent funding/backing, the national competition here could start to attract some decent talent back home.....who needs the NRL when we have the talent pool here? Over 40% of the current NRL rosters qualify for NZ......not bad considering...and a decent backer/TV deal would see a fair few of them "come home".

What Union has done to league in the past shouldn’t be forgotten, but it’s time that we forgive the Rugby Union establishment of today for what its ancestors did. I highly doubt that anyone is still around from 100 years ago who sanctioned such outrageous bans of our game. There’s probably the odd Union Bigots about today, but I’d like to think that a majority of rugby union fans are a civilised bunch who watch the game because they were bought up on it.
I don’t think you’ll find many Union fans that make a conscious decision to choose Union over league because of what happened over one hundred years ago. Likewise I didn’t start supporting League because some old man stopped me in the street rambling on about Northern Pride and how the evil southerners want to get one over us.
However we must not let this get in the way of the fact that Union is in debt to rugby league – mainly the damage that was done in France. I do wonder if there’s ever been an official apology from a rugby union establishment on the behalf of what was done in the past?
Either way, I’m sorry for the union bigotry that you’ve come across in your life. I’m sure that all league fans are salt of the earth, friendly and have no airs or graces. This reminds me of going to house party on my estate where every bashes Asians because they’ve had a bad experience of a few people who happen to be Asian.

100 years ago? Those decisions were still being made just before they "turned" professional. Do you know there are still lads about with LIFE bans, preventing them from playing Union? The crime was of course having the nerve to play league!!

It is the only sport in the world I can honestly say I hate, the sooner it crumbles the better for me. It is brilliant being in oz and seeing RL starting to suffocate it. Hopefully a combination of the IC, massive TV deal and SA pulling out of S15 one day will see it relegated to the ranks of baseball or basketball in this country. Force watch out the Reds are coming! for over 100 years the rfu waged war on RL
professionals were banned from RU, but only one type of professionals - professional rugby players
professional boxers and other pro sportsmen were allowed to play RU
the bans were to stop RL growing
then after 100 years of fighting a war banning professional rugby players the RFU itself adopted professionalism without so much as an apology to RL for what it had done

You'd better start praying that Leeds win their Image Rights test case against the Inland Revenue then, if we lose then we can all probably kiss goodbye to professional RL in the UK and the already dominant position that the English RU have will be cemented firmly in place (they already have IR agreements in place)

| worse than that the S15 is going backwards. When the Force were brought in the ARU could afford to give them $12mill start up grant. When the Rebels got the nod they asked them to not receive any funding for for the first year and have been ok'd to recruit 10 overseas players as there isn;t the RU talent in Oz fo another team. Inglis was the perfect marquee signing for them, he was available yet they weren't in with a sniff of getting him. In years gone by the ARU would have swooped for him in a heartbeat.

You are kidding right.
What happened to me was about 15-20 years ago in which I decided to try a game of union when a work colleague asked me to go down to his local RU club.
I had a couple of training sessions and they decided to give me a game in the 2nd XV.It went quite well(although in saying that I touched the ball twice as I was playing centre) and even scored a try.
Anyway we was in the clubhouse and the 1st team coach came to me and asked if I played RL anywhere and I said I played for my local amateur club. You should of seen the look on his face and within 10/15 mins of our little conversation I was asked to leave the premises.
As for saying that all RL fans are salt of the earth etc what has that got to do with anything. The reason I started to watch and play RL is because I fell in love with the sport.

You either have an incredibly over active imagination or you eat a lot of cheese at bedtime.
Your story sounds like the intro to one of those made up letters you find in a gentlemans magazine.
I almost expected you to go on and say that when you left the premises you walked back to your Ferrari Testarossa on the car park only to find the 1st teams coaches wife (who was Lucy Pinders body double) lying naked on the bonnet wearing only a St Helens jersey waiting for you.
