ALTERNATIVE TO WHAT?
Seriously....alternative to what? 1 Bloke having a whine?
I have pointed out the link between paid advertising and editorial coverage and just because you choose to ignore it doesn't mean I didn't post it. If you have an axe to grind with me and my standpoint, then fine, but to continue with the "patronising" rubbish is simply inane.
There is no conspiracy against Rugby League by the Media and anyone who says there is needs their bumps looking at. This is the 21st Century.......there is a global financial meltdown taking place and Media bosses will dig up their dead grandmothers and sell them for revenue. If RL represented an opportunity to "turn coin" then Adrian Morley would be on every front page in the country......but it isn't and a bloke from up north standing outside the offices of the DT will not make 1 jot of difference.
RL and in most cases, RL Fans, need to ask themselves what it is they want for TGG. Firstly, I would suggest that all clubs, especially the one I follow, =#FF0000concentrate on filling their own stadiums. That costs money........no 2 ways about it. IL has worked wonders at Wigan, the guys at Hull FC have cracked it too and Bradford are on the right track.....
The opening round of SL in 2012 has a potential capacity crowd of 130,000 (and change)..... =#FF0000fill the grounds and repeat that and the Media will have to sit up and pay attention.
BTW, the bits in =#FF0000RED BOLD are an alternative to one guy who has already dropped off everyones radar except on here...HTH

| I would suggest if RL fans are unhappy with the coverage given to RL in the DT , the simplest way of showing that unhappiness would be not to buy it , that's how it works

| What would be the opinion of the posters on this thread , if I was to do a one person ' picket ' outside Red Hall to show my displeasure at the way the Championships are treated by the RFL ?
Would I see messages of support on these boards ? , or would I be considered a ' nutter ' ?

You'd get a mixed response as usual although I can at least agree that there is something worth complaining about and I'm sure others feel the same.

What alternatives are there for the fans to do? Write a letter to the RFL demanding they be more effective at publicising our game? Wear their replicas to work? I think that the fact that one man was passionate enough to actually go and do what he did may have at least reminded the editor of our plight. ATEOTD - we all know that RL gets approx 0% coverage in the capital and unless people actually do anything about it, the game will not be in the southern based medias conciousness if you like.

Did you read the bit in red in my previous post? FANS CAN ATTEND GAMES......Fill stadiums and the papers will pay attention.
As for him reminding the editor of "our plight"...WTF Rugby League is not a friggin' charity and shouldn't have to go cap in hand to anyone.
Southern media bias blah blah blah....show them some coin, or at least an audience and they will write about it.....but 3,000 at the Stoop, 4,000 at Salford or 10,000 for an international in Leigh isn't going to float their boat.
42,000 for the RL International RL Double Header featuring the worlds best 3 teams....Saracens got that for a Heineken Cup match recently......was it because the Daily Telegraph wrote about it....or could it have been the advertising the club placed in and around the area, as well as in the London Press? Saracens average about 6k at normal games, but they spend monsy, advertise and low and behold.....they get 7 times their normal crowd.....
I am sure if they got a disgruntled fan to stand outside the offices of the DT they would have filled the place

You are being rather melodramatic you make it sound like a large scale refugee camp stuck in the middle of a war zone with no food or water. Exactly what dreadful danger or risk are we talking about here?
Quote ATEOTD - we all know that RL gets approx 0% coverage in the capital and unless pe[ople actually do anything about it, the game will not be in the southern based medias conciousness if you like.'"
The paper in question before "the picket" had 28 articles (excluding blogs) during the 4 nations tournament purely about that tournament, this clearly is not 0% coverage and seems fairly good representation for a tournament that generates the level of interest that it does. London version of the Metro covers most of Quins/Broncos games and is on a par with most other sports except football, even the likes of the Mail and the Evenening Standard regularly have articles on RL. Radio London broadcasts most Quins/Broncos game live and a regular RL discussion program. Talk Sport regularly covers and mentions RL. BBC when based in London renewed rights to the Challenge Cup. Sky has been very generous to RL over the years.
Show me some major media outlets based in London covering sport that provides 0% coverage. You are clearly speaking from a position of ignorance, please check the facts.

well done, i was able to find it by going the long way too... My point is that the exposure we had before is now gone. We as RL fans know where to go for our RL news, but borderline fans who use the tele's website are the ones we could have reached here with such exposure...

...and my point is, as it has been the whole thread, whilst it is good to see a fan of the game making a stance, it will not change a single thing in relation to the Daily Telegraph.
I posted an article (2008 I think) that was published in the Sunday Telegraph where the author, a Union fan, wrote that he'd watched the coverage of the RLWC and had been taken in by the passion, speed and everything else regarding the game. He finished the article with the comment "I'm hooked"
I wrote to the RFL & Harlequins RL pointing out that the game had a new ally.....and he should be lauded and invited to any and every event in the hope that he could continue to publish pro-league articles......as usual, I was told it was a good idea and then,........er.....nothing...nada.
RL will get no help from anyone other than itself and its fans.....as I have said, start getting 130k a week throug the gates and the papers will have no choice other than to cover the sport in more depth, but don't expect a placard and a disgruntledf letter to get anything......other than a tab on the website for a week.
3K gates at the BroncoQuins and 5k to see Australia v Wales isn't going to shift many Landrovers and that's what the Telegraph (and their advertisers) want......The Bradford Bull campaign in 2011 is the way forward for some clubs, whilst the approach of Wigan/Hull FC works for others....any club that struggles (London/Salford) needs assistance from the RFL (Advisory, not financial) to get their grounds full......the point is that as Huddersfield and now Bradford have shown in recent years, if you are willing to spend, as well as taking a hit on income, you will get the fans through the gates....8k average at Odslum in 2010.....14k a year later....both years saw them finish 10th, but with 75% more fans in 2011 because the spent/took a hit........and not a copy of the DT in sight

Good review IMO....but point of order, it's not a "new" RL section...it's always been there, just it briefly had its own tab on the front page to get to it......which it now hasn't.

The Standard?
DT always had a RL section listed under "other sports".....and it's worth remembering that only 4 short years ago, the BBC site had league listed under "other sports" and still did less than 13 months ago on their mobile site

Ben Clissitt (Sports Editor) didn’t give any evidence to suggest that Boxing or Tennis were any more popular either. Strange how he didn’t have the results of many ‘surveys’ available.
You wouldn’t need to be particularly cynical to contemplate the thought that RL gets a disproportionately small amount of coverage in the sports section at the DT; I haven’t heard a convincing argument why that should be the case. Surely they can’t be biased against RL.
I don’t see there’s any harm in bringing this issue to the attention of the DT; as from the letter posted above: “Rugby League fans are extraordinarily good at keeping us informed of their feelings, something for which we are very grateful.”
Merry Christmas
