In fact we should prepare a 7s team and once the RFU has got their squad together, challenge them to a few games in a blaze of publicity...
'"
Why RFU.?
The 7s squad for Olympics wont be the best players though.
they are not going to miss there countries tours.
and the clubs will stop them.
The 7s circuit are for fringe players/semi pro players and academy boys to get exposure in high profule tournaments.
If you wacth the 7s circuit you would realise this.
Wales very own shane williams is hard to stop with 30 players on the pitch let alone 14 in 7s he would be untouchable.

| Quote ="eels fan"No ones gives a stuff about 7's, it's not very popular on the box and I don't think the OG are going to change that.
There is stuff all money to be made from 7's and the Olympic 7's will look like a joke.
And as far as I can tell, the OG are falling in popularity every time they are held, I use to watch it all the time, but the last games, I seen 1 Aussie win silver in the 110 hurdles because the TV was on in the kitchen at the same time I was cooking.
Most people i know didn't bother watching it much either.
You can tell the people running the OG are thinking that too with the way they have gone on over the last decade saying they need more up to date sports included like BMX, Skateboarding and other stuff.
As I said, 7's is a waste of time and any country that goes into 7's 100% over the proper forms of Rugby are up for a real surprise.
I always get a massive laugh when the unionites all come out with " Kenya and Fiji blah blah blah always beat the Aussies, Kiwis, Poms, S Africans and all the rest, they are so suited to 7's"
Yeah I guess they are seeing as that's more or less all they play and when they go up against all these other teams, no ones ever heard of the players in the Aussie, Kiwi, English, Welsh, S African sides because they aren't good enough for the XV's, any pub team filled with 7 drunks from any of the established Union nations could beat them.'"
The players are not nobodies if you know your rugby. Wales are filled with regional academy players/semi pro players and 7s specialist. The same goes for all the teams.
James Hook starred in the commenwealth games 7s..!!

That lot tear up the All Blacks.lol.. they would be luck to beat the NZ 7s squad let alone the best of the all blacks ie carter, nonu, rockoko, mccaw, soilalo and muliania etc.!!'"
Why would the IRB govern a team raised to represent Great Britain at the Olympics? Would there not be a Great Britain Rugby 7s organisation raised?
And unless my memory deceives me, League teams have destroyed Union teams - playing Union - many times over the years without raising too much sweat. Wigan, Bradford and Saints have walked the Middlesex 7s without too much trouble. Bradford travelled down and did it the day after being thrashed by St Helens!! Just watch Wigan beat Wasps in the final - Wasps had taken the lead but once Wigan got some possession look at the lines they hit; they tear Wasps apart.
League is all about getting your attackers outnumbering your defenders. A lot of this is about running lines, dummy/decoy runners, runarounds, etc, etc - something that works spectacularly well at 7s, whether Union or League. I watch the IRB 7s comps all the time and they still don't run angles or hit lines like League lads; they simply rely on a few offloads and individual flair to create a bit of space and go...
Quote ="garethtaylor15"Why RFU.?

Well if your super-duper Union chaps are away on tour, it's a perfect opportunity to bring in some League lads, who after all spend their lives training for a game that suits 7s perfectly. Marcus St.Hilaire and Henry Paul represented England at the Manchester Commonwealth Games. Union players are great at Union, League players are great at League: it just so happens that due to the nature of the game and the space on the pitch, 7s suits League players.
Shane Williams - excellent player. Would like to see him give League a go.

But if the IRB see the inclusion of 7's as a way to maybe start a new 7's competition with club 7's sides then you can bet your life that their media mates will snap up the rights to televise it. Therefore, if ARFU decide it's worth spending a few bob to win the Gold medal NRL clubs will be offered hard cash to release players in the run up to and for the Olympics.
Not saying it will happen, but remember dally, not everyone is as blinkered as some when it comes to Union and like it or not, 7's getting into the olympics is a MASSIVE opportunity for Rugby (both codes) to grow [uglobally[/u.....let's just hope Rugby League are the ones to benefit in the long run.
Please don't reply with "it's a sh7t game"....or to call me a "union troll"......I am just putting across an opinion of what could happen and why NRL clubs might WANT to get involved.'"
the ARU havent got money for any new competitions
they are extending the S14 season by 30%, and playing more tests to keep their revenues from collapsing
union is gone as a sport in australia
its got more holes in it than a RU defensive line

union is a tiny sport that lies about its popularity
any time there is fair competition with RL it loses.
as this thread shows
union is going the way of test cricket.

I have to ask....
did someone from the IRB, RFU, ARFU, NZRFU, IRFU, WRFU, SRFU, or any other associated Union organisation run over your cat?
Dally...you are obviouly very passionate about league which is a really good thing, but for gods sake, do not use Australia as a barometer fror GLOBAL attitudes. Yes, League is far superior to league in many ways and yes, in Australia it is kicking ass.....but as a global sport Union have the media and everyone else for that matter in their pockets. Rant all you like, but the M62 sport that is English RL is a 3rd tier sport according to the governing body of UK sport......a sad but true fact. 6 months in NZ and I can see that league is a real threat over here, but in the UK it is considered a "0" sport. Tennis gets more coverage.......a davis cup match when GB are trying to beat the giants chile get's more air time on national FTA TV.........
stop posting outrageous statements about the WORLD OF SPORT when in fact you are posting about Australia......it's not proving anything apart from how insular your vision is.
as I say, you are a true league fan, if somewhat misguided in your posings from time to time.

png is a rl heartland, union is zilch
where does that leave union?
dieing off in scotland
mid side sport in wales, a tiny nation
mid size sport in ireland, a small nation
a small sport in france and well behind soccer in england, and in some cases beaten by league

| each week more than 4 million viewers will watch the nrl in australia plus around 100,000 fans at the gate
combine them and this is more than every single club union competition in the world.
the NRL on its own draws more fans than the combined total of club union globally.
nsw and queensland have very large populations
RL owns these areas.

No it doesnt SL average attendence 2009: 9336, guiness premiership 11786.
Shall we take participation numbers into account too? 3.5million people play rugby union worldwide whilst only 650,000 (of which 450k are in australia) play rugby league across the globe.
Rugby league is making great strides around the world but only in Aus and PNG is league king whilst in the other 128 countries that union is played, union is king.

little wonder our players are highly sought after by japanese ru, french ru, RU in england or even AFL.
