Well... if it's for a good cause...
Come on bullman, fess up and tell us who you really are!
Anyway, back on topic. How can League Express improve? We're always keen to get feedback from supporters.

publish on a tuesday with the OPTA stats in. that way all the match reviews of certainly the SL games will have more analysis rather than just reporting what we will have read on ceefax or in the sunday papers.
You will also have up to date injury news and information on who has been cited from the games. All of this would give us more than we get from all the other 24 hour media you are up against.
You can also preview the upcoming games in light of the last weekend results.

| Quote ="bullman"Don't get LE myself and don't see that changing either. Looked at it today and not only was it as lazy as ever (stories just cobbled from the net, shocking design etc) but the price had even gone up. Why?! League Weekly is still the same price - 20p cheaper - and is better anyway. I think Ian Millward's column is great and Andy Wilson is one of the best RL journalists there is. That paper has improved loads and they keep adding new stuff, while LE is just the same old clap trap full of Martyn Sadler's ridiculous pontifications. He's obviously so self-righteous that he thinks he can churn out that rubbish AND raise the price. No chance. LW for me.'"
Like Tom, I would suggest that if you want to make silly comments about your rival publication, you should come out of the closet and reveal your identity.
Anyone can have views on a newspaper, and some of the comments on here we find very useful. League Express can speak for itself, of course, but I would go to great lengths to defend our designers in particular from your ridiculous assertions. Everything is capable of improvement, of course, bu within the time needed to put out League Express I think the quality of design is quite remarkable, even if I am blowing our own trumpet. And the amount of information we have to put together each Sunday is phenomenal.
But the one thing we will never do is go onto messageboards disguising our identity for the express purpose of trying to do down a rival. Unfortunately by making comments that are so over the top, you don't do yourself any favours.
Apologies to the other readers of this thread for pontificating once again.

| I agree that moving the release of LE to Tuesday would be more practical and allow more time to write match reports, injury and team news, and gather more information etc but the downside would be that many of their regular readers would just pick up a copy of Weekly on the Monday instead and then not bother the following day with Express.

Living in the NE it is pot luck if i find either to read. so i get what i can find
For me though the important thing would be about the quality of what is in it rather than when it comes out. About 80 % of what i read in both RLE AND LW i have already read or seen in the Huddersfield Examiner, Gaurdian or Independent , boots and all the tries, Ceefax, or on here or the other forums
If i was reading something different along the lines of what i suggested i would be more likely to subscribe. things like analysis from an EX ref about the weekends reffing contoversies. To do that properly though you have to allow for a bit more time between the end of games and the issue.
Reading some of the weekly RL papers is a bit like reading the pink un or the green un on a saturday at 5.30 pm. Once i got ceefax they became obsolete. Unless the papers tell me something i did not know or challenge me in some way then there is no real incentive.
Just my personal view

| I work for Asda and read both LE and LW on a Monday morning, when they arrive in store. Not too fussed about the match reports, but I enjoy the various editorials and columnists ......... and the letters pages are hilarious and an absolute joy; especially in LE, where the conspiracy theorists, and other assorted nutters, are able to "pontificate" at length.
The letters alone make it a "must read" paper.

| Martyn, I'd definately agree with some other posters and suggest that LE takes on more opinion related columns. Not that I know anything at all about journalism but most news, whether it be rugby, soccer or politics, most people have read online before you guys go to print. Im personally more inclined to read opinion based articles on anything rather than something i've read the day before and hence I rarely pick up news related publications. I almost believe people want to be told what to believe, hence my 'the bloke in the pub said' theory. Its something, personally, I believe you should look into.
I'd also agree Ian Milwards column is pretty decent in LW and one of the better columns i see about, tbf I quite like Stevos in your print.

| How about re-printing a random match report from say 10/12 years ago?People love a bit of nostalgia and it's nice to be reminded of some names from the game long forgotten.

I have to say the letters page is the most embarrassing part of LE.
It is like the worst posters on here putting their words into print. To be honest it makes the RL supporting demographic look embarrassing.

I'm pretty sure LE used to do a 'on this day' page, which was pretty good.
Incidentally I renewed my subscription for LE & RLW last week. Rugby League World has been really good recently.

| Agree with Wheels that the 'on this day' page should return.
Some sort of statistical preview of the following week's games would be good.
Also looks like Stevo's column may not be returning this year?

| Some people really have to ask WHY League Express actually came into being.
Then ask why Rugby Leaguer had to change and then why League Weekly came into being.
It's not difficult.
In fact the respective owners have been very open about their respective publications.
My only comment regarding both weekly papers is that the clubs themselves don't appear to help themselves, but then again that could be down to editorial policy.
No doubt the club's MEDIA Managers could enlighten the followers of the game in this respect.

I did make that same suggestion a couple of years ago via email to Martyn (in a thinly veiled attempt to pick up some freelance work, admittedly) but was told it wasn't something they were interested in doing - don't have the emails any more but I seem to recall it was something about being difficult to keep it topical given the tight publishing deadline for a weekly paper?

Could you explain as it is difficult giving a view without knowing the history. Pm's are fine
