I am aware that Gibson had many influences from the NFL including coaching technique from Vince Lombardi and others
But I wasn’t aware that the bomb was a tactic in NFL – I have seen many punts in American football to gain territory but I have never seen a bomb as an attacking weapon
Also, I would have thought that the tactic of kicking the ball high in the air and trying to catch it for your own advantage would have existing in Rugby League well before the 1970’s
You learn something new every day don’t you!'"
was watching an nfl doco. on one of their teams and they used the term bomb to describe those long high passes from quaterback to running back and i think gibson took that idea, realized you cant throw the ball forward in RL and adapted it to a "bomb" kick we have

So, taking the name of a play from sport and applying it to a tactic that had been around in rugby for decades

Are you for real
The Up and Under, Bomb, Garryowen or whatever you want to call a high kick with chasing players has been around since before Rugby in either codes or American Football. It is actually a tactic used in the Eton Wall Game...a game that pre-dates Rugby Football by at leats 50 years (1776).
Then, if you work on the basis that it has been used in Union since the game started, I find it funny that you see the need to make the association with a game that THROWS THE BALL FORWARD......
Your hatred of all things Union is blinding you..........to the extent where you are rambling and talking utter b0ll0x. What next? The shape of the ball comes from American Footbal too? The scrum is actually derived from hockey?
Get over it dally......Union spawned League..League is the better game, but it is derived directly from Union
As for your earlier comment about name calling.....have you had short term memory loss for long?

union did not spawn league my little friend.
in 1895 a bunch of northern rugby clubs decided theyd had enough of the hypocrisy, dishonest of the RFU and their attempts to block their influence in the game and decided to break away
for over 10 years the nu played the same rules as before
in 1906/7 we decided we needed a more attractive game and made most of the rule changes we associate with RL, but this was 12 years after our clubs left.
indeed many current SL clubs pre date the formation of the RFU so they are older than the union game.
in 1895 the game of rugby split into two. the rules didnt change just the governing bodies
heck the sport was even called NORTHERN UNION.
the genesis for modern day RL is 1906/7

...sounds like it all started with Union....therefore, Union spawned League. Thanks for trying to prove me wrong and failing miserably whilst also looking like a complete ballsack at the same time.....genius

where did I say it didn't?
Fact is dally you looked like a plum for suggesting the bomb/up and under was stolen from amaerican football and even worse, from the forward pass in said game. You have now tried to wriggle off the hook by getting into a history debate...and are looking even more like a complete banana with each post. Stop now before you resemble a fruit salad
Back on thread. NZRL needs only one thing from the NRL......and it's not an Origin type game.....it's a second franchise. The NRL won't do it though......they can't see farther than their own back yard.

Yes, the same rules that were devised by the RFU, therefore making it rugby union rules, and any variation afterwards would have been spawned from those original rugby union rules.

Should that not read “admit for once, that you're wrong” – a small but very significant difference

No, they don't.
A running back is mostly a ball carrier and would only ever receive short passes.
What you describe as a "bomb" is generally called a Hail Mary pass (on the grounds that it is so unlikely to come off that a prayer beforehand is advisable) and would only ever be thrown to a Wide Receiver.
It is also quite a different play to a bomb kick since it isn't an attempt to pressure the wing / fullback (equivalent positions cornerback and safety in Gridiron), the expectation is that the receiver will be well away from any defensive players.
Gibson may have got the term "bomb" from American football but he certainly didn't get the idea from it.

he took the name and the tactic and adapted it to RL. since we dont allow forward passes im guessing he thought a kick could replace the tactic.

the game of rugby was played before the RFU were around
union has no right to the game of rugby on its own, only an idiot would believe that
funnier that you deny your own history
have a look at the foundation date of your club Hull Fc. its well before the RFU were invented
there was one common game of rugby which both RL and RU originate from. in 1895 NU clubs split from the RFU and set up their own governing body. they played the same game as before.
