| In 1974, the newly formed boundary of Lancashire stole land from Yorkshire. The newly formed county of Cumbria stole land from Yorkshire. The newly formed county of Greater Manchester stole land from Yorkshire. Let's not even mention the land Cleveland and Humberside took.
Overall, God did bugger all.

| Paul Cullen would shake his head in disbelief and this geographical vomit. And then no doubt add some random words together to make up a sentence that doesn't make any sense but still fits into a Rugby League scenario.

| Both St Helens and Widnes are within a stones throw of Liverpool, yet neither are Scouse.
Just ask anyone from the City of Liverpool if the inhabitants of either town are fellow Scousers and you'll get the same answer...we are both dismissed as 'Woolybacks'.

Scousers live everywhere as I am based in Gloucester and a person I know has a Scouse accent.Does that mean Gloucester people are Scousers? Some say I have a Manc accent.Anyway I have some good Scousers friends and not all are annoying. Thought discrimination was banned in this country.

Anyhoo...who gives FF?
A little history lesson of it is at all required but the 'Scouse Migration' took place predominantly in the 50's & 60's due to so called slum clearances. The people who lived in the housing areas which were cleared moved to, amongst many other places, outlying towns such as Widnes, Runcorn, Skelmersdale and a little strangely Winsford. Newer housing estates, such as Upton in Widnes were built and Scousers moved en masse into these areas so, as they all sort of stuck together, the accent remained. I grew up in Upton and as such have loads of scouse friends and aquaintances.
Nothing wrong with Scousers as a whole although some can be opinionated and sanctimonious, a bit like Yorkshire folk in that respect

| To my Warringtonian ear the traditional Widnes and Sintellins accents are very similar. And it isn't Scouse it is rather unique.

Barrow used to be in Lancashire, Hull was technically a county in its own right between c.1485 and 1974 and if my neighbour's to be believed God is WELSH!

| Widnes is becoming more and more scouse all the time... My friend lives there, has done all his life, he has 3 children, all boys, 7, 11, 14.... They all go to school in widnes, play rugby in widnes, support widnes....ALL of them have a scouse accent.
if you speak with a scouse accent, you're a scouser.. It doesnt matter where you live or what your phone number is. Your ACCENT is the thing that defines you.

I can't say that I've heard any folk from Warrington speaking with what I'd call a scouse accent. I used to visit there regularly as we had one of our offices located near the Causeway, occasionally grabbing lunch out the office I didn't notice any scouse accents. I'm sure there are people out there who speak with more of a regional inflection than others even if they live next door to each other and that dialect will bleed into fringes of other areas due to population migration and who people associate/socialise with.
Certainly the way I pronounce my vowels changes after being back in Hull a few days though it soon gets to normal once I get back over the Southern softy borders..lol

To your ear, maybe. I lived in London for many years and was often accused ( especially by American business people ) of being 'from Liverpool' even though I'm Warringtonian. There are overtones of accents all around the area you grow up in, and you get elements in them in your own speech pattern. No Liverpudlian would mistake a Widnes or Warrington 'accent' for a scouse one.

| Very old friend of mine, originally from Widnes, has lived in Canberra for more than 30 years. Still sounds like a Widnesian to me. No way could he be considered a scouser. His wife, on the other hand, who is a scouser (from Everton), sounds like an Aussie.
I'm a scouser btw.

A nurse at a hospital in Bristol which my missus attends every few months has a distinctive scouse accent. Wife, whose own scouse accent is much diluted after not living there for about 50 years, asked if she was from Liverpool. No, she says, I'm from Cheshire.
Guess where.

Nonesense. My two children were born while I lived in London, at the Mile End and London Hospitals respectively. They are both technically real Cockneys ( born within the sound of Bow Bells ). Needless to say, neither of them has a 'Cockney' ( which most notherners for misread as 'London' ) accent, as we did not live long in the area after their birth. They are still, however, Cockneys without accents.

Scousers are from Liverpool, which is Lancashire. Birkenhead is Cheshire so technically she is right. Although the accents are basically indistinguishable from each other.
St. Helens and Widnes have very similar accents but sound nothing like scouse. Search 'Doug Laughton talking out his backside' on youtube.
