| Quote ="AaronBull"FWIW I'm all for a quicker game, it will benefit the game in England tremendously, and if something can be done about it, in regards to a "crackdown", it will be something that has my backing. Although a quicker ruck against Wigan is something I'm not looking forward to defending against Sunday!'"
I'm not sure that it is better simply by virtue of being quicker, to be honest, particularly as the RFL's motive for wanting speed seems not to be so that the fans get to see a greater number of quality sets of six per game, but rather that there will be more tries due to there being gaps in the defensive line as markers are caught off side or not square.
There has always been the issue of the player playing the ball stealing a yard or two as he's regaining his feet, only now the tackler/marker cannot exert any influence to keep him on the mark without being penalised; and this would be fine if the referee's calls of "held" and "release" meant that both defender [iand [/iattacker had to submit and begin the next play. Instead we have a situation where the attacking player is still struggling to move forward and the defender must allow him to move off the mark and end up off side or not square. Without any complimentary clamping down in this area it leads to a massive number of PTBs that are a bit of a shambles and breaks that come off the back of stolen yards rather than actually breaking down the defensive line with skill.

Jon Wilkin has been a Saint by name and a Saint by nature recently. When was the last time he was involved in anything remotely dodgy? In fact he's even working with the RFL in order to root out the unsavoury characters in Super League.

Can you help clear up my confusion, other than Lima in his first SL game which has been dealt with. What exactly are the officials going to crack down on? What cheating are you on about?

| Face it, the way Wigan played the game last year was boring* to watch, one of my team's games against Wigan was the least entertaining game of rugby league I have ever seen. The turgid wrestle after every tackle leaves me miserable watching them. It was a sad day for rugby league when these tactics were rewarded with a championship, I praise the referee's controller for making a decision to crack down on these tactics before everyone else started using them.

While we're at it maybe we could crack down on tackles above the waist, keep that ball flowing freely, eh? And turning the ball-carrier on his back over the try line does nothing but prevent entertaining tries, doesn't it? In fact, let's go the whole hog and shorten the whole pitch by 20 metres and have two players from the defending team leave the field. That will be "entertaining" won't it?

| McLennan started it, McGuire evolved it, everyone else struggles with it, and surprisingly Leeds, under a new coach, are not as obvious.
It's down to "what you think you can get away with" and of course if you are "caught" ........ 'Want me guv honest' you (match official) are being biased/inconsistant/ not competant etc., etc., but it never ever is my fault.

I think it's you who is being shown up as knowing nowt. How many times have you walked away from a match where your team scored lots of tries and said "That was boring wasn't it?"
Last year Wigan were superb in attack. Flowing moves, spreading the play from wing to wing and scoring plenty of tries. That is why Wigan fans keep mentioning scoring lots of points. Because the way we scored them was ENTERTAINING to watch! If they were boring 5 drives and a grubber kick, or stick it up your jumper and let a prop fall over the line we wouldn't keep harping on about the number of tries we scored. Even I'd be bored watching that all the time. But they weren't. They were entertaining for us to watch.
Maybe it's just boring for fans of lesser teams to watch Wigan scoring so many times against them, whilst they can muster nothing in attack. Back in the season that teams were beating us easily every week I was bored. The only thing that kept me going in some matches was singing with all the wigan fans "always look on the brightside" but I bet those opposition fans were entertained and enjoyed the match when they scored so many tries.
And with the defence last season, yes there were wrestling tactics used to control the player hitting the floor, but there were also massive hits, ferocious tackling and dominant sets that didn't let the opposition make more than 20 metres sometimes. Again, watching some of those hits go in was ENTERTAINING. (Seeing a pattern yet?)
The one that annoyed me the most about this moaning last year was Kear, when he said "it was like watching paint dry". In that match we'd scored a few length of the field tries, and our attack was a joy to watch. Yet because he can't coach to any standard that even comes close to what he saw Wigan do, he spits the dummy out and says it was boring. He sounded just like a little child who loses badly at a game saying "I didn't want to play anyway, it's a stupid game!"
Anyway, yes I've had a bad day and that is the end of my rant. I'm going for a brew to calm down

Boring boring Wigan. I'd appreciate what your saying if we actually were boring. I'm quite sure in the top 10 rugby games viewing figures last season, Wigan figured in 7 or something like that.

| Here we go again, coaches not being able to grasp that the play the ball is an extremely important park of the game. Clearly the clubs who are taking advantage of the play the ball techniques are dominating the league.
Wigan are doing nothing illegal, they are dominant in the ruck meaning other teams have to show actually a bit of rugby skill to score and not just scoring off the back of a quick play the ball.
It works for the aussies who are clearly better than us. Why can't it work for England? Because we are afraid to move with the times and realise that slowing the play the ball down significantly benefits the team.
And just to add- Super league titles:- Maguire 1-0 Potter! actions speak louder than words mick!

Aussies are speeding it up again and started doing it when they introduced 2 refs, they got bored of all the "wrestling" rubbish. So as per usual England are at least 3 years behind the Aussies.

To make matters worse, the aussies always have the biggest say on how an international game is officiated.
Potter can say what he likes, if he gets into the head of the ref then it's a job well done and he's earned part of his weekly wage.
I hope he takies the moral high ground next time one of his players is banned, will the club appeal it? probably.

yeah what next are they going to get wigan for, trying to score tries and kick conversions

| Wigan were the best team in the competition last year - FACT.
In my opinion they were one of the most entertaining. Yes, they slow down the opposition - that makes the opposition less entertaining, not Wigan themselves.
They will probably crackdown on the wrestle element this year, it will even up the comp and let more teams play expansively.
Wigan took advantage of the wrestle tactics being allowed more last year, fair play. This year they won't be allowed so much - but from an outside P.O.V Maguire doesn't seen the type of coach to sit on last years success and hope it works again - he'll evolve the Wigan team to play to the whistle again this year. They'll be up there again, and deservedly.
I agree with Potter on the 'dirty' tactics like pressure points etc, but I reckon there's too many on here condemning the whole wrestling idea. That's not what Potter's doing, just the bad ones like Chicken wings. Wrestling in the tackle will remain, not as much as 2010, but it'll still be there. The teams that adapt fastest to the whistle this year will do the best.
