Quote ="davids"I think the Wakefield Trinity rebrand (back to Trinity) was fantastic.
I respect Saints for having not deviated from their original nickname and not modernised their badge too much.
Warrington have gone for something weirdly in the middle and fairly rubbish by comparison, with our American nickname and our proper nickname on the same badge - why?'"
Warrington tried to go full Wolves, from 1996 at the commencement of SL, but some fans just weren't having it, but it's only been in the last 5 or so years that the club has started to re-recognise and brand the traditional Wires/The Wire name again too.

The animal names seemed to have worked best in cities/towns where the RL club competes with the Football club for attention. For example you can now say 'I'm off to watch the Rhinos' rather than just Leeds which (and someone from Leeds please correct me if I'm wrong) could have meant United or Rugby before.
In Hull saying you were off to see Hull always meant FC historically, and Hull City were in the doldrums for years probably helped with that. Our Sharks name was never popular, though they did try and implement it when we were bottom of SL and bankrupt which didn't help matters.
At the end of the day a new logo only goes so far, its the performances on the field that matter most. In normal times I bet Salford would have seen good crowds this year on the back of the increased attention from their finals. HullFC's crowds were boosted by our 2005 Cup win, those kids in the stands celebrating that day could now be parents bringing their own kids along to games.

| At least Hull has a maritime connection.
Sale RUFC's adoption of the Sharks nickname was even more ludicrous.

Better change both Hull clubs then, they just don't cut it any more.

| Traditional badges are fine for football clubs so why not RL?
I don't see Liverpool, Arsenal or Tottenham failing to attract viewers because they have traditional (but updated) badges.
I think we're too ready to chuck away traditions in the hope of getting more fans, when some of those traditions aren't the problem.
Why are Warrington's gates up over the past two decades? Having a decent ground that caters for both fans who want corporate luxury/a nice family experience in the stands and fans who want to stand on the terraces, and a competitive team, not because they adopted an Americanised nickname.

Nothing wrong with incorporating elements of a coat of arms into a decent club badge, Wigan should have taken the castle from the centre of theirs and made something of it.

| The main problem with having the town coat of arms (I believe) is that the club can't copyright it, hence Wire dropped it from the shirts in 1991.
But you can have a variation on the town's traditional symbols and make it the club's own.
Which is what Man City do...
