| Quote ="Roy Haggerty"This.
It’s not ‘expansion success’ or ‘heartland success’; it’s ‘expansion success’ or ‘heartland collapse’.
The problems of the heartland clubs are a direct result of a sport losing strength in the sports marketplace. The clubs we have don’t attract the money, the profile or the players to sustain the historical semi-pro structures. If Toronto, Toulouse, Catalans and the London and Wales clubs didn’t exist, Whitehaven would still be in trouble. Quite possibly in more trouble.
RL in this country is in serious decline on every indicator you want to look at. Our historic existing marketplace is shrinking and cannot support what we have, let alone what we want. We really are now in a situation whereby if we can’t find and develop new marketplaces, then we’re toast.
The expansion clubs aren’t hurting Whitehaven or other clubs like Whitehaven: they’re actually the only hope Whitehaven has of surviving in the long-term.'"
Spot on, that.
Although I'm still not sure how Whitehaven managed to mess up their budget by £60k. Their entire central funding allocation can't be much more than that.

| Being suggested elsewhere that the sponsor informed Whitehaven they were pulling out last season, and even paid this season's money up front. The club then spent that money last season, looking to gain promotion. If true, they've got no-one else to blame but themselves.

They haven't been given a parachute payment and haven't had the begging bowl(s) out like Leigh and Whitehaven in recent years.
It will be West Wales Raiders who provide opposition to Whitehaven, shortly.

It's obvious that West Wales are totally out of their depth both on and off the field, they are so far off the pace that they are almost bringing the game into disrepute and I don't really see how they can ever catch up in their current guise (but I hope they can). Not that it has anything to do with Whitehaven.

| What a surprise that within the first 4 posts, 2 Leigh fans have turned the thread into an anti expansion thread. They are getting absolutely tireseome now these Leigh fans. Every thread is turned into an anti France or anti canadian thread by the same posters

| Quote ="headhunter"No I don't have much sympathy when other clubs like York can get crowds of over 4,000, Newcastle can get four-figure crowds .'"
Bit disingenuous to say York have crowds over 4,000 and Newcastle have four figure crowds when both of these were achieved against the only big crowd puller in the division (Bulls)
Yorks and Newcastles were both boosted by the fact that Yorks was the first match of the season and Newcastles was the night before Magic weekend.
Every teams biggest fixture in that division this year is that match and Whitehaven haven't had theirs yet.
On a side note that this thread turned into I'm all for expansion and think what is happening in Canada is revolutionary but also find it really sad when a heartland club is struggling.

They must really be out of their depth off the field - perhaps you should inform Wigan Warriors.
The following is what it has to do with Whitehaven - They are in the same league. Therefore they are scheduled to play against one another - despite West Wales Raiders being totally out of their depth;in your opinion.( We'll ignore size of squads &,injuries.)
West Wales Raiders will be hosting Whitehaven,at Llanelli, later this month.
I have not noticed, anywhere, that West Wales Raiders will not reach the end of this campaign without any financial assistance at fairly short notice.
Perhaps a club, not named West Wales Raiders,is actually out of their depth.

West Wales recently had the all-time record scoreline against them, are conceding around 80 points per match, have shown up to away games with less than 17 players and had to cancel their home opener an hour before kick-off because they didn't have the correct medical supplies. Don't pretend things are ok there, even an insolvent, insular and miserable Whitehaven is way ahead of them at the moment.

| West Wales might be having a tough time at the moment but I bet they have more home grown players than a lot of “heartland” clubs.
How many years of trying was it until Queensland beat New South Wales?
Stop the hate towards the expansion clubs, RL family.

Three sentences that seem pretty irrelevant to the discussion, but also don't have much connection with each other?
Check out the Fax squad. Several local boys that have come through the reserves into the first team.
Btw, we don't "hate" the expansion clubs... we just want to beat them.

| West Wales seem to be actually improving they were 14-0 up in there last game granted they got hammered in the end but there is slight improvement somebody also put London skolars in with a list of struggling clubs whereas to me they seem to be a very well run club who have improved over the years and can we put to bed that Cumbria is this hotbed of RL the 3 clubs struggle to pull in 2000 fans between them there’s a big amateur scene in Cumbria but that’s it

Your point was about how many home-grown players were in the West Wales squad. How is having a few Welsh players in the Fax squad (most of whom haven't played a 1st team game) relevant?

According to their own web-site , they've conceded 426 points in their last 4 games and scored 0?

I suppose after 144-0 and 126-0 defeats an 20-80 result is a moral victory

| How many years of trying was it until Queensland beat New South Wales?
After the origin rules came in immediately with 3 straight wins. Before 1980 it was completely one sided the way of NSW, when it was a contest between teams picked from teams playing in Queensland and teams playing in NSW who had all the premiership clubs. Crucially QLD players playing for NSW clubs were not eligible to play in the game and the changing of that rule led to a competitive outcome.
The historical answer to this question is 14 years after the Queensland v NSW match was first played in 1908.

I won't bore you with the list of injuries to the likely first choice players that have occurred to West Wales Raiders this year, or the list of ill-luck that has engulfed the club.
Whitehaven have been in existence for a longer of period of time - they also seem to have had a number of issues to deal with.
I wish them every success in reaching the required amount stated, and hope the consortium continues the upward journey for them.
I look forward to seeing them at Stebonheath Park.Llanelli later this month.
West Wales Raiders seem to meet teams on the crest of the wave and dual reg players from higher league clubs on the top of their form.I expect Whitehaven to be full of confidence, with financial concerns gone,by time they arrive at West Wales on the 23rd.
