| can we start a petition to stop barrie saying kick the ball "off the island!"
i bloody hate it when he says it, if it was once a game, then i'd let it go, but any ball that goes into touch.
Bill arthur has started saying it as well when commentating.

| Barry and Terry are great for the other RL programmes, injecting humour into the sport, keep them off the live commentary though, just perpetuates the 'northern' stereotype.

Not so much that as they don't offer anything at all to the broadcast. They have no real insight or knowledge of the game, and unlike Stevo they are inarticulate and don't add any real excitement either. They are also borderline unprofessional, there have been several occasions where the other commentators have had to tell them off for condoning on-field violence. Being northern isn't their problem, being unintelligent is. Jon Wells is northern and he is a million miles ahead of Barrie and Terry, even Phil Clarke makes them sound like utter morons. In a different era they could've probably got away with it but they stand out like a sore thumb on modern sports broadcasts.

Plenty of RL supports condone on field violence.
Many a dull game and a quiet crowd has been jumped into life by a fracas.
It's not all clean play out there!!!
But I would suggest that by your name you already know that.

There's a difference between getting excited at a blow-up in the way that Stevo would and actively condoning someone being punched in the face. Especially in modern sport with the issues surrounding concussions, in fact the NRL have banned punching completely yet here we have commentators egging players on, commending them for "standing their ground" and including potentially dangerous acts of foul play on their highlight reels. RL in this country really is still in the dark ages in a lot of ways.

Couldn't agree more - and now it's got to the point that when there is foul play, Eddie jokes with them about the fact that they'll celebrate it in their 'big hits' reel later in the week.
I like Barrie Mac in some contexts - if Sky had bothered with any kind of magazine show to complement the SL games, he'd fit right in as comic relief; but the other fella is cringeworthy; it's baffling that Wells is consigned to standing in front of a big telly in his overcoat, whilst O'Connor continues to get a commentating gig.

| I mute the TV every time Phil Clarke opens his mouth, he seems to start speaking with no idea where his sentence will end and just keep talking. He can't make a succinct simple point about the game without making it into some incredible defining fact.
'In my opinion Warrington will have to score the next try to have any chance of winning this game and I think the next team to score will definitely win the game and go on to win the match because of their ability to score the next try of the game which could be a season defining moment for them and see them go all the way to the grand final and transform the club into a global superpower of Rugby League, or either code of rugby for eternity and maybe the whole universe. Possibly. Over to you Eddie.'

| Terry O'Connor is the Michael Owen of rugby league.
"It's about turning up for one another"
"Big guy isolating the little man"
"Running harder than your opponents"
"Putting in the big shot to lift your side"
"Making the hard yards up the middle"
"Trying to kid the referee"
"Taking the juice out the tank"
"Insert x coach - will be saying we need to be better in the second half to win this match"
"Muscling up in defense"
"About saying to the opposition, you are going to have to run harder than us to win this match"

| Wells is perfect for the analysis that has to be his role, he does it well and i look forward to his segments.
Carney is the strongest of the lot, he needs one of the main jobs and should partner Hemmings until he retires.
Clarke should be given his own show that isn't the live games or partner Wells instead of Carney with the analysis. Clarke to his credit considering the grief we give him is very good at seeing the minutiae we all miss.
Baz and Terry should be on a programme like Rugby AM, ex pro's that think more like the fans and are allowed to share their non pc views of the sport as well as the more comedic element of sport.
Cummins...pointless get rid.
Bill Arthur does the pitch side stuff very well and he should keep that role.
Hemmings should be made to do the home Catalans games too, it's not hard to do from a studio surely?

Just because they've played and been involved in the game doesn't give them an insight or knowledge of the game outside their own careers on the field. Neither does it make them good commentators.

| Carney and Wells to go forward with another "Pure Commentator" like what Eddie is supposedly employed to do. (He used to be good at it too). Then keep one of Barry Mac or Clarke to do touchline, the second game they show side by side now and the Catalan game. Get shut of the rest.

this would work!
too much courting controversy and offering opinions, that should be left to the studio, not the commentary box

| Quote ="ploinerrhino"Headhunter writes . they have no insight or knowledge of the game
er they were both internationals and have worked in several areas of the game since retirement'" So what? They both retired 10 years ago and neither have ever offered any type of insight other than totally arbitrary comments that even the most oblivious of fans could make. I wouldn't mind if they injected some type of excitement like Stevo does but they don't even do that, in fact more often than not they take away from the excitement, O'Connor in particular is deadly boring and has a tendency to talk for 30-40 seconds at a time about some long-winded and irrelevant point while ignoring whatever is happening on the field, which is inevitably more interesting and exciting than whatever he's talking about.
Bottom line is they just aren't intelligent or articulate enough to commentate on serious matches. I agree with the earlier poster that Barrie can have some use in a minor (non-commentary) role as comic relief and adding a 'non PC' opinion. Terry is completely useless and has no place speaking on television.

| The last and best ever RL commentator was Keith Macklin, Hemmings et al are not and have never been fit to put the cover on his microphone.
There are a few radio commentators that I'd put in front of any of the current lot, at least they can describe/commentate on the action instead of continual arguing/disection and random witterings as we have now.
The supposed great John Motson is a micturate poor 'commentator' he is incapable of really describing what happens when it's happing but just states what happened after the event during the replay.
Hull's very own David Doyle Davidson is let loose with the mic still for our games. It's like listening to somone with memory problems and whom has little grasp of English language. .it's beyond awful
