As already pointed out, Tetley's no longer have any real presence in Yorkshire and Copenhagen is a long way from Leeds, where the decision will have ultimately been made.

Equally, I think most people are reading this current sponsorship wrongly in it's primary aim. Since Tetley's quit Leeds, sales in Yorkshire have noticeably dropped and the brand value and loyalty in Yorkshire has taken a real beating. This is about addressing this issue as well as raising brand awareness generally. That is why it the Tetley brand, and not the more nationally recognisable Carlsberg brand is being used.

Unfortunatley hasn't Wembley Stadium got an exclusivity deal with Carlsberg, meaning that you might not be able to have a Tetley at the Tetley Challenege Cup Final?

Both brands are owned by the same company, so that seems unlikely.

Why is the sponsor Carlsberg rather than Tetley if they are so closely entwined?

It's an improvement over Stobarts, it's a big brand name and its linked to a massive international company.

The RFL are targeting "sub brand", probably because they are not capable of getting deals directly with the parent company as a sponsor.

We have:

Big Soup sub brand of Heinz
Foxy Bingo sub brand of Bwin
Tetley sub brand of Carlsberg

Much prefer sponsors to be with the parents Bwin, Heinz and Carlsberg carries more profile image.

Our leaders did a similar thing a couple of years ago, announcing the Daily Mirror as our media arm for rugby league, the other nationals started reducing column inches after that.


The positive thing is that we are I hope getting decent sponsorship money, but someone down the line "image profile" is going to suffer and the game will have no value to attract big money sponsors who can inject a lot more money into the game.

Totally right, Tetley's image has taken an absolute slaughtering over here recently and there's no doubt they will have been looking for a good way to mitigate that. It may surprise some but Rugby League offers sponsors something rather than just being a pit into which money can be poured. This sponsorship would appear to fit perfectly for Tetley's current brand issues and plays to RL's strengths. And if the latter is its power in regional markets then that is something which has its own appeal to some sponsors.

Tetley's have probably ploughed more money into Rugby League than anyone else other than Sky over the past two decades, through Leeds and their previous Super League sponsorships and ongoing associate and beer deals with a whole host of clubs. It's good that the RFL have been able to bring them back into the central fold again in a big way. I'm amazed anyone can find fault with this one - it doesn't even fail the pointless "compare with Rah Rah" test.

Yes they were - when they started in the mid-90s I vowed never to drink Tetley's again, despite their involvement in RL and it virtually flowing out of the guttering at Headingley. This wasn't too hard to achieve

Good Sponsor for the Cup and as SL's official Beer....can't see why anyone would have a problem with this other than the RFL's insistance on acting like the IRB and not releasing financials.

They were yes. They also sponsored the then English RU club competition which was replaced by the LV Anglo-Welsh Cup you now see.

I think the logo looks great, but particularly happy with the fact that it is in the same style as the extraordinary RL stuff. Hopefully when the SL and Championship sponsors are announced the same style will be used, helping create a recognisable brand.
