Maybe a few years back.....but not any more IMO.
This week he and his side-kick got the name of the warriors second try scorer wrong.....then they put it down to all the warriors backs "looking the same" ...I think the term used was "there's a fair bit of looky likey in the warriors side".....shows what era he comes from.
There was a spell in the first half when it was all warriors that they didn't commentate on the game for about 7 minutes, but instead reminisced about bygone days at Leichhardt Oval.......
Chris Warren is languishing away on Fox Sports News back in Australia......he was always a good MC at the Broncos when he was in London.......he might be worth a shot, but not his old man.
John Wells is most certainly one that SKY need to keep hold of.....

I'd still say RW is far better than Eddie and Stevo.

Remember Chris Warren did well as an anchor for SKY, not sure how many games he did, last one I rem was Federation shield so that was 6 years ago, and he kind of lost interest at the Broncos towards the end, think he could see the direction the club were taking when Lenagan jumped ship. Always good on Boots n' All when he did that, and I for one don't have an issue with an Australasian voice in the Sky team, I'll tell a man that for nothing, esp when the union pundits inc Sean Fitzpatrick and used to (I assume following stroke) inc Michael Lynagh. My feeling is that Brian Carney is being groomed for the captain of the Sky team, but he is no lead commentator, so that leaves Bill Arthur, Rod Studd or retain Eddie Hemmings as commentator only and get him to focus on that. Shaun McRae and Paul Cullen always seem to interject with some decent points whenever they're on, and John Kear too. Jon Wells is a fixture, and Barrie and Terry seem alot better than they used to be, esp when kept apart.

| Quote ="Ferocious Aardvark"Thought it was done very well. Having just been promoted to the prime Sky Sports viewing slot, there are bound to have been many footy viewers watching for the first time, and good on Eddie for welcoming them, and making a bit of an effort to big up our sport. Not to mention some personal pride for having become, for the summer, the main commentator on Sky's flagship sports spot. Give the man a break.
Also, it was a pretty good game with a big crowd, some good tries, fine weather, and a great night all round, so all in all, a good result for rugby league. I thought we filled the spot exceedingly well, and Eddie played a big part in that.'"
100 % agree..............there will have been people watching that game who may not have seen a game before, why not explain to them what's happening.

| Only me who likes stevo then? cant help but think he reads these forums i always laugh when i hear him try and make sure he says his "chip over the top" line at least once a game. Eddie is the problem the mistakes he makes it was only last week he was calling Huddersfield Saints. I remember seeing Jeff Stelling doing some Rugby league work before he was big we should try and get somebody like him doing it , Stevo does a bearable job he just needs a decent lead commentator beside him.

| Eddie is awful. What tickled me was how he hept saying "for those tuning in expecting to see football...", as if the world and his wife doesn't know that the Premier League ended 8 days previously! I don't mind Stevo as much as his passion and enthusiasm comes through very well but his commentary pretty much consists of his own archaic catchphrases that he trots out whenever they're remotely relevant to the game, and sometimes when they aren't, and getting almost every video ref decision wrong

Just watching Boots n All and he has asked Paul Cullen what Widnes have done for Michael Witt to be out all season. As he plays for London I'm not sure they'll care.

| Quote ="Solly"He was going on like thousand's of football fans were tuning in cause the PL season had finished, they do it every other week explain the rules 'in case new fans are watching' last night was particularly cringeworthy, do my head in.'"
Oh absolutely, perish the thought that anyone fairly new to the game might be watching, if they are then fsck 'em, I say, why should we pander to these newbies eh?
Quote ="RLBandit"RL needs to be presented like a mainstream sport to be accepted as one. Commentary should assume that the listener has decent knowledge of the game. Newcomers will soon pick it up, they don't need patronizing.
'"
But it's not like the commentary was an 80 minute primer though, is it? 98% of it was just match commentary, don't know what you're moaning about.
Quote ="RLBandit"We sound desperate, and as for comparing how hard our players are compared to soccer...the worst thing you can do in marketing is to insult a thing that people like. Soccer fans don't want to hear that comparison, even if its true.'"
Nonsense. Stop being so precious. What would you prefer, a paean of praise for soccer every 5 minutes? And if any soccer viewer doesn't appreciate the difference between the sprawling, "I'm-in-agony-and-about-to-die" antics on the football field, then that would be blind from birth ones. Good on Eddie for bigging our players and our game up, as well as for very fairly and rightly casting aspersions on the dishonest rolling about tactics that are such a feature of many soccer games.
And the thought of some football fan indignantly switching off in some fit of faux insulted indignation really is funny. Honest, you needn't worry about this.
As for the Aussie NRL commentaries, honestly these are different, because they are different commentators, but I don't see how you can say they are any better. The best commentary is one that doesn't grate, and I think Eddie does a decent enough job. Comparing him with Ray Warren in his prime is a bit of a pointless exercise. What next - David Gower isn't as good as John Arlott?
Stevo's buffoon impersonation is, though, well past its sell-by, all he ever does is quote from his compendium of cliches. It must be what Sky want - they can hardly miss it. But they do seem to be successfully watering him down at times with others chiming in who are less annoying. The only thing I'm not sure of is whether Stevo is being bad and annoying on purpose, or whether he thinks his comments add something. At any rate, he is by no means the main commentator, that's Eddie, and he's OK.

| OK there's plenty moaning going on but not many credible suggestions.
How would YOU present it, and who would you have doing what jobs out of the CURRENT crop of RL presenters/pundits/commentators in the UK?

Main Commentators : Barrie Mcdermott/Brian Carney
Analyst : John Kear
Touchline Reporter : Southern Guy (Can't remember his name...)

Damian someone? Mixed race bloke off the BBC?
McDermott and Carney aren't commentators. McDermott's a pundit, Carney is a presenter.
Out of the current lot you've got something like this...
Presenters - Eddie Hemmings, Clare Balding, Brian Carney, Mark Chapman (Martin Offiah at a push)
Commentators - Eddie Hemmings, Dave Woods, Bill Arthur, Ben Proe, Ray French
Pundits - Everyone else.

That would be even worse than Eddie & Stevo! Carney struggles to get his words out at times and Barrie just struggles to string sentences together full stop.

| I prefer Bill Arthur's commentary to anyone else's. I'd like to see Eddie as studio anchor, Arthur as main commentator, Carney pitchside and a rotation of McRae, McDermott et al as pundits. I'd also like to see Stevo, Clarke and Wells dropped down a fooking mineshaft.
