| For years on these forums fans have called for the salary cap to be changed to allow concessions for those players from clubs' academies and should do more to keep our best players from Union and latterly the NRL.
Now the SL clubs have agreed amendments there are complaints due to the initiative coming from Wigan.
The SL club chairmen can't do right for doing wrong!

"We could go to Australia and get a middle-grade £100,000-plus-a-year centre but we don't want to do that.
"We would rather give young English players an opportunity. Darrell Goulding, for example, will get his opportunity again and Josh Charnley is another potential centre."'"
Makes me wonder why you chose to make it up then? Especially as you seemed to missed the most pertinent point about cost.
Hmmm....

So imagine your a coach/scout of a super league club and you see potential in a player and recommend/want to sign him for your club. You then find out that he got sacked from a previous club because he pooed all over a hotel room. Your telling me you wouldnt sign him just because he made a stupid mistake when he was 19 years old?
Anybody would think that the guy stabbed somebody FFS.

| The good news is he can play for England within a couple of years if he's any good. Then Wigan can get an exemption for him as well.

Apart from, he's not playing in the NRL he plays for a Toyota Cup team called the Vulcans. Keep trying Saddo, poor, poor effort.

| I'd love to know how Wigan are "abusing the new cap rules" full stop. There's a free quota spot and room under the cap. A 20-year old Toyota Cup player won't be on a massive wedge!

You really are obsessed. If you look at the players we have lost and look who we have brought in its no wonder we could fit it all in even with Sams increase in salary.
Hoffman, Coley, JTomkins and Deacon will all have been within our top earners, not forgetting a certain Martin Gleeson who will also have been part of this group.
Then bringing in 3 players from Crusaders and then a centre who plays in the Toyota Cup or something along them lines.
I think you should concentrate on your team and the how excited youll be at playing Paul Wellens at full back all season again.

If you knew anything about rugby league you would know the Vulcans are the New Zealand Warriors 3rd grade side.
New Zealand Warriors (First grade)
Junior Warriors (Toyota Cup)
Auckland Vulcans (New South Wales Cup)
They are an official feeder club and are comprised of development juniors and players not deemed worthy of a place in the NRL club squad system.

| If he'd been from the North West, It would be regarded as a triumph of scouting for young talent, on a low contract, low risk but high reward.
As he's from the Southern Hemisphere, he must be an average at best criminal who's on 48 Million a year, of which only £3.50 counts on the cap.

| How does anyone know he is on a low wage?
I wouldn't move to another country that is expensive to live for the sort of money people are quoting on here.
Really surprised if he gets a Visa with his lack of first team appearances, unless he has an EU passport.

How much is he on there?
Maybe he has to give up a decent job to come over, nobody knows how much he is on.
Very disappointing signing from Wigan signing a 3rd grade overseas player.
Strange recruitment by Wane so far at Wigan.

| I'm sure that the salary cap was changed solely at the insistence of Wigan, who cohersed the RFL into changing it for Wigan's benefit, by misleading them that it was to retain ST, and that the other clubs had no knowledge of it.
I just can't find the link to these facts. Maybe Saddened could help?

Although I've never seen him play so I can't comment on his ability he won't have been picked up by the Roosters if he didn't have something about him and he's only just turned 21. This is still all rumours anyway. Nothing official about Gelling from the club yet

We see these sorts of comments every year.
We signed deacon and only deacon 2 years ago, everyone was saying how his best days where at bradford. It turned out as a master stroke as he guided us to grand final and challenge cup success.
Prior to this we signed George Carmont similar time to Warrington signing King, everyone was saying warrington had got one over wigan and wigan where in decline! 4 Years on and hes one if not the best centres in super league.
At the end of the day centres are few and far between in the UK so we where bound to look overseas whilst the development of our own centres continues for next year when Carmont retires.
Brisbane took a punt last year on a lad called Jack Reed! Look how hes developed this year.
Leave Wigans recruitment to wigan and let's see whoose smiling at the end of the year, with good depth in the forwards with the signings of Lauaki, Dudson and Flower (2 YOUNG talents) and also now a 3rd on the way in Gelling we're clearly thinking outside the box a bit and looking for depth.
Wigans line up potentially next year could be
1. Sam Tomkins
2. Josh Charnley
3. Anthony Gelling
4. George Carmont
5. Pat Richards
6. Brett Finch
7. Tommy Leuluai
8. Lee Mossop
9. Mike McIllorum
10. Jeff Lima
11. Harrison Hansen
12. Liam Farrell
13. Sean O'Loughlin
14. Paul Prescott
15. Stuart Fielden
16. Gareth Hock
17. Joe Mellor
You will not hear this wigan fan complaining to see that line up! considering we've got players such as Gil Dudson, Ben Flower, Lauaki, Chris Tuson, Dom Crosby, Darrell Goulding, Stefan Marsh, Amos Roberts, Ryan King, Matty Russell all waiting in reserve for their shot!

Not being funny but this is coming from someone whos club has signed Brett Seymour, a guy who was sacked off from the Sharks from drunken antics and has been less than average at the Warriors making juist 22 appearances in 2 seasons, and again got into trouble over drunken antics.
Oh yea and has been playing along side him at the Vulcans this year. At least this guy is young and has potential to improve and become a decent player, whereas Seymour will always be a 2nd/3rd grade player. Add in Tony Martin and Martin Aspinwall, and I would be more concerned at your own strange signings. At least we are looking at signing young players with potential insted of proven journymen.

| A massive 8 overseas players in the Wigan 17. Those overseas player rules are working fabulously I see.
How are teams able to add to their overseas contingent when the rules are supposed to be reducing them? Saints have done the same. Have the rules been relaxed again?
On Gelling it seems he's a decent player. The NZ Warriors fans seem to be of the opinion he's as good as the current NZ international centres and that he should have been in their first grade as at least a backup if not a starting centre.
They all agree that his future is in the backrow and not centre though. But it doesn't look like he's a bad player. He was apparently the standout in the Vulcans Grand Final win and was expected to step up to first grade.
Quite how a player like that attains a work permit is beyond me though. Do those not exist any more? I can remember days when NRL players with 50+ games were denied permits.

Thats something I will actually agree with you on. 8 is too many regardless of what loopholes exist. I would like to see all clubs limited to no more than 4 overseas signings, but you will always find ways to get around it as many Aussies have passports from other European countries.

| Poor signing if we are honest. Typical SL to fly a kid half way around the world to 'give him a shot' when there are kids throughout the country busting their s for a shot at SL.
You have to ask why a proud club like Wigan is looking in the NZ reserves grades for kids to mould in to SL centres, are there none in this country? Why not take a punt on Stefan Marsh or Darrell Goulding or Josh Charnley instead of a 21 year old NSW cup player.
Nothing to do with the SC though
