Not to mention Danny Houghton being consistently referred to as Danny Hawton.

| I think its amazing we're as big as we are considering how we get treated in the national media. You'd think premiership tiddlywinks was bigger than us as far as the papers go yet not many other sports would have a 25k wigan saints derby and hardly get a sniff of a mention the next day.
And rock god, that is how it's typically pronounced

Is it? It's not how I would typically pronounce it.
Even if it was the case that every single other individual by that name pronounced it 'Hawton', you would think that the a BBC commentator would know enough about the sport to pronounce it properly. I reckon the name 'Kearney' is typically pronounced differently to how the Bradford half pronounces it, but it's a commentator's job to know that.

| errmm yes? The Hull FC player is the first of many of that spelling that i've heard that way. I have 5 or 6 friends with that name and not one of them pronounces it the way the hull player does. Weird.. its probably a NW/NE thing maybe?

Maybe it is. The point still stands: French should know what players are called and how their names are pronounced. That's the very least I think we can expect from him.

I don't think he bothers with any research and just turns up an hour before KO and reads the team sheet. That's how it seems anyway.Nor does he bother, obviously,to listen to his own previous commentaries in order to improve and eradicate mistakes.

| Reading this thread, I'm glad that I was at an Aunt and Uncle's Golden Wedding celebration do in West Yorkshire this weekend (including an excellent curry on Saturday night in Bradford), so I didn't get to see the games!

Are you not a Rugby League fan then? The Warrington Wigan game was one of the best I have seen in 25 years watching the sport

Yes, I thought the coverage was great
I have no chip on my shoulder, simply recognising the fact that a game on BBC1 will attract more casual viewers than one on BBC2
The Warrington Wigan game was a great advert for our game - why is it wrong of me to want as many people in the country see it as possible?

everyone that has BBC1....has BBC2 too......its the next channel up
as for the coverage, thought chappers was excellent and surprisingly knowledgeable..where as with clare "baldwin",while enthusiastic, you often get the sense she's learning something and theres alot of explaination about the game and has a result it can be quite patronizing imo

Claire Baldwin is this really good looking girl who lives close by me. She should be on the telly at every opportunity. Claire Balding should also have been in the studio.

I think he trying to say you are a bit of a muppet if you think people will not bother pressing button #2 if there is nothing worth watching when you press button #1

| More viewers = More money for the sport
If you don't think the channel the game is broadcast on influences the viewing figures then you are an idiot
Promotion ahead of broadcast and the time of broadcast itself are also important to viewing figures, the challenge cup gains no favours there either
why are 6 nations games on BBC1 saturday prime time? to catch casual viewers! how many casual viewers does the Super league Show get on BBC2 at 4am on a monday night?

| It is a well known fact that more people watch BBC1 than BBC2.
It is not a case of so called channel snobbery.

clearly its not nonsense then is it mate.. .....the worst of these people will flatly refuse to watch anything on BBC2 or channel4......and god forbid there's anything good on 5,bbc3,bbc4 etc...
incidentally the best thing i've seen on tv this year was 'our war' about british troops in afghanistan on BBC3..yet nobody watched it....but its gonna be repeated on BBC1 later in the year and 3-4million people will tune in...
'the office' is another classic example of channel snobbery....it did alright on BBC2 but it trebled its viewers when it was on BBC1

What the hell are you talking about - why am I a 'channel snob'?
I will watch RL on any channel any place - I am simply stating over and over again that more casual viewers watch BBC1 than BBC2 and it would therefore be better for our sport to be shown on BBC1 - can you really not understand that point?
