| Quote ="Dunbar"First of all, at risk of sounding like a play ground fight, if you check the thread you will find that you started the ‘contributions’ around spelling errors – I was simply trying to help you understand the differences between spelling and grammar. I guess I’m just a helpful soul
Back to topic. We cannot expect Gareth Thomas to promote the game of Rugby League on national TV in the US – perhaps we would if it was a UK programme but the vast vast majority of the US public don’t know there are two forms of rugby (in fact the vast majority probably only have a remote idea what rugby is at all)
I’m sure that the producers would have loved it if Gareth started the interview with... “Well Ellen, in 1895 the Northern clubs met at the George Hotel in Huddersfield to discuss the emotive topic of broken time payments to players etc etc etc”
When I go and visit my Italian in laws, they know I enjoy rugby so they mention the six Nations/RU World Cup and so on – I don’t bother trying to correct them that they are not talking about the right form of rugby because (here is the important bit) they don’t know and don’t care, they are just being nice! (my wife of course knows all about the differences because I bang on about it all the time... but that’s her fault for marrying me)
You really should just try and calm down a little'"

HE could have said. well I play the toughest sport in the world, imagine AF without pads, very few rests and constant hitting. He could have talked the game up in a way the Americans would have been interested in, even let the show know before hand so they could have had a compilation clips of big RL hits. I am pretty sure the audience would have been intrigued to know that a gay man plays the hardest game in the world, expelling many myths about gay men. What did he talk about?

Wow – that's some achievement, to find an accusation of being anti-gay in the post you quoted. Is there something you're keeping, so to speak, in the closet?

You could have a very valid point there. Apart from the fact that gay people tend to recognise one anothers sexuality by typing almost exclusively in lower case there are some other tell tale signs about in his other posts.
I'm getting a whiff of 'jilted former gay lover' in this one.

| I see dally messenger continues to contribute to reasoned debate on these boards..........his recent conviction for Drink Driving (which he seems proud of in another thread) seems to have given him more time to join in and derail debate over the appearance of a current RL player on American TV.
For those who are unfamiliar with dally messengers pedigree....his abusive post with the comment "f**k him" had nothing to do with which way GT bats.....and everything to do with the fact that GT was a union player.....dally messenger does not have any time for anyone who dares watch, speak of, read reports of or even mistakenly turn over channels and glimpsed3 seconds of Union.
He is very knowledgeable with regard to Gridiron though....he thinks the up'n'under/bomb/short high kick and chase is a tactic that Australian RL players adapted from American Football
Back on thread......Ellen is a openly gay TV celebrity and stand up..........she has no interest in RL/RU and neither to the demographic of her audience......but "social issues" like this one, which is close to her heart are of interest to this audience. As for Russell Crowe.....he OWNS a club that is a major sport in Australia......he doesn't play for one. Of course he will try to grow the game.....GT is picking up a couple of years salary at the end of his career......he is interested in his fitness and maybe the growth of the game in Wales.

Nothing to do with them.......more to do with my 6 years in boarding school playing union and being educated as welll as being taught how to be tolerant of others opinions. This enabled me to make the decision myself that I believe league is the better game of the 2 rugby codes, whilst not developing an unhealthy hatred of the other code.

...says who? A keyboard warrior like you He was on the show because he is a heavy contact sportsman who is openly gay......your average american wouldn't care.
Who cares what Crowe says on an American talk show....seriously? The NRL is full of pacifica talent, SL is full of over the hill Australians and yet just because an OK actor blows the bunnies trumpet to talk show host some people think it will be the start of a RL explosion stateside.....it won't!
On the point of endorsements....I have a bit of bad news for the Australian Tourist Bods that thought Oprah would be good for the tourism in Australia....in fact, a few bits of bad news.
Of Oprahs audience that flew to Australia.....78% had to apply for their first passports to make the trip.....4% more then the number of Americans that don't have a passport (74%). Of the 26% of nationals that do have a passport........72% do so because they are employed by the Government....ie, Armed forces etc.....
Lastly...and I know this might be a tough one to grasp....just because Australia is bucking the trend and has a strong economy....the rest of the world is pretty much buggered.........and at the front of that lot> The God Old U S of A......

It wasn't that clever.
A clever person would [unever[/u have used a semicolon where an apostrophe is clearly the correct punctuation mark to use when you are indicating the omission of one or more letters or a grammatical case used to indicate a relationship of possession.

The fact that you hate union so much is also hillarious. If you actually were open to the idea of being able to watch both codes without prejudice, you might find yourself with more supporters. But instead you seem to enjoy insulting Union as often as possible. Pssst, heads up, Union fans couldn't give a toss whether you like them or not. The sport is doing just fine without you, could you say league is doing the same.

So, here's how it goes. A professional in a minority sport, one not played to any extent in the USA, is invited onto a chat programme hosted by a big US TV star, a gay female, and asked to talk about his experiences coming out as gay. So Thomas says ' no way - I'll only come on US TV if I'm allowed to spend at least half my time promoting Rugby League'.
I'm sure Ellen's producers would have gone for that in a flash.

| Quote ="sally cinnamon"I expect its because Mickey Rourke is playing him in a new film. The Americans will treat this as a real curiosity, actually over here in the media I think this whole gay business is being overhyped, I don't know anyone who actually gives one about Thomas being gay, the real prejudice Thomas was likely to receive in RL is because he literally "played for the other code", so we all assumed he was a pansy boy who couldn't tackle, run or pass. Even at 35 he showed that some of those prejudices are a load of rubbish and he was easily able to handle himself in RL, he acquitted himself in RL far better than most of the recent RL converts to RU have done.
I remember when John Amaechi played basketball in the NBA (he's an English guy from Stockport), he ruffled some feathers there because he didn't fit the mould of their typical black basketball player who was supposed to play the role of a wannabe rapper, get in the odd scrape with the law, sound dumb, play ball and accept his paycheque. He turned down a massive contract from LA Lakers to stay with Orlando Magic because he wanted to stay loyal to the Magic for having faith in him (probably the biggest financial incentive ever turned down in the history of sport, he rejected a $17million deal to stay on a fairly modest contract at the Magic), he also turned out to be an outspoken intellectual with a PhD in Psychology and started speaking out against US foreign policy, and then came out as gay....this did not go down well in redneck America! A film on Amaechi's life would be great, they should cast Denzil Washington as him....'"
Just a pity that NBA is even more boring than wendyball.

This is again where you show yourself up as being a total idiot. The only people capapble of relegating union to an afterthought in New Zealand are the NZRFU themselves........you fail to comprehend that the only reason the Warriors get decent gates is because they are based in the part of the country with the highest Maori/Pacifica population.........Rugby Union is the National Sport of New Zealand...there are 5 S15 Teams.....14 ITM cup teams...the All Blacks are the most recognised Rugby Brand on the global stage.......but you continue to post bollox regarding League Dominating Union over here......you know nothing.
I meet once a month with the people who KNOW what the plan is.......I am fully aware of where RL is heading in NZ and it really has no interest in domination of a sport that is 500%+ bigger than it.
The NRL is doing nothing in NZ by the way......if they wanted to attract more fans and money to the game they would have the Wellington Orcas in NOW....but that would only go to highlight the lack of depth in their competition.........NZRL is a seperate organisation and I believe that with decent funding/backing, the national competition here could start to attract some decent talent back home.....who needs the NRL when we have the talent pool here? Over 40% of the current NRL rosters qualify for NZ......not bad considering...and a decent backer/TV deal would see a fair few of them "come home".

What Union has done to league in the past shouldn’t be forgotten, but it’s time that we forgive the Rugby Union establishment of today for what its ancestors did. I highly doubt that anyone is still around from 100 years ago who sanctioned such outrageous bans of our game. There’s probably the odd Union Bigots about today, but I’d like to think that a majority of rugby union fans are a civilised bunch who watch the game because they were bought up on it.
I don’t think you’ll find many Union fans that make a conscious decision to choose Union over league because of what happened over one hundred years ago. Likewise I didn’t start supporting League because some old man stopped me in the street rambling on about Northern Pride and how the evil southerners want to get one over us.
However we must not let this get in the way of the fact that Union is in debt to rugby league – mainly the damage that was done in France. I do wonder if there’s ever been an official apology from a rugby union establishment on the behalf of what was done in the past?
Either way, I’m sorry for the union bigotry that you’ve come across in your life. I’m sure that all league fans are salt of the earth, friendly and have no airs or graces. This reminds me of going to house party on my estate where every bashes Asians because they’ve had a bad experience of a few people who happen to be Asian.

100 years ago? Those decisions were still being made just before they "turned" professional. Do you know there are still lads about with LIFE bans, preventing them from playing Union? The crime was of course having the nerve to play league!!
