I was at that game. Serious attempts were made to round up the animal at various points but it was just treating it as a game, waiting til people got near, then taking off only to wait again for more people to chase it. To this day, I'm not sure which would have presented the most farcical viewing - playing on, or transmitting footage of stewards, players and police trying to round it up. Believe me, I couldn't see it being caught quickly, short of shooting it. In hindsight, this might have been the best option.

I thought the whole evenings viewing was fantastic! The Game that Got Away was bloody good. Interesting to see how Salford hasn't really changed since then; relying on the clubhouse to keep the club afloat.

I loved the Wigan bit. With the stadium in the background it looked very much like a scene from The Damned United.

I think I may well have to email the beeb and congratulate them on a job well done.

eh? the feature was on salford and developing alternative revenue streams. the footage was from inside the willows variety centre which did happen (hence the footage from inside it!!!!) and is still there and operating today. it wasnt about improving the stadium per se, but about having a viable business model that obtained income and allowed the club to continue AND invest in quality players. its not a coincidence that the expert summariser on the later game (or whatever title existed in 197icon_cool.gif was David Watkins - a player salford poached from RU (with the associtaed costs) in the period featured in the previously documentary. Salford was, still is, a soundly managed club.

brilliant documentaries by the BBC i have to say, they should do more RL themed stuff,like maybe show a cup final in its entirety again?
on the eddie waring documentary, there were some moments of brilliance and humour "he's all over the place,but he's only small so he's not got far to fall" when the camera's picked up on an injured player for example, but also quite moving in the end.
i remember going to my grandparents as a little boy and hearing eddie waring on the tv but i probably remember him more doing it's a knockout,i didn't realise that he had so much resentment from rl fans though.

I'd love the BBC to make a load of the old finals available on iplayer, especially the saints bradford game of early 90s fame.

I'd be quite happy to buy them on DVD. Micron video used to sell copies of finals, I'm not sure if they still do, but they didn't seem to have a complete collection the last time I looked.

i'd love to see any old rugby league,scrumdown etc ,i suppose if we campaigned long and hard we might get some shown on espn classic as we did last year IIRC?
i have quite a few huddersfield games on VHS which im hoping to try and get onto dvd from the 90's always worth watching that 30-0 at keighley in the cup now and again

Think it is/was available on demand on BT Vision or summat along those lines. The differences in that era and the modern game are startling, particularly in terms of an attacking line.

Not only is there Wakey's triumph in the Yorkshire Cup '92 final against Sheffield on there, but there's also the semi final against Fev! Amazing stuff. My dad had taken me to a few matches before then, but that was the game that really got me hooked on RL. I was only seven and I still remember plenty, but I'm going to have to buy it.

BT does have some CC finals in their catalogue, but their sport section is horrendously organised. There's lots of stuff on there, but its all under the genre of 'football', so its near impossible to find stuff.

I dont want to pay for them from Micron, I already paid for them with my liscence fee.

The BBC should launch a 'classic sport' channel. They must have literally millions of hours of sporting archives that they could show.

Agreed. Or a BT Vision style catalogue on iPlayer. I would imagine large portions of their entire back-catalogue of broadcasting will be digital now anyway, so I can't see it uploading it onto the net being a massive chore or expense. Literally millions of hours of broadcasting with a sizeable core audience and little work or effort required on their part.

Heck, we could get a sort of club going on here; a bunch of us agree, for example, to watch the 1985 CC Final at 8pm on a Friday during the close season and have a good chat about it on here like what usually happens when there's a match on Sky. The next week it would be the 1986 CC Final. I'm sure there's others as sad as me on here who'd like that concept.

Don't be daft. Was a good, professional documentary. I'm usually one of the first to knock the BBC on its RL coverage, but even I can't complain about that documentary.

I don't know, but when the BBC interviewed the party leaders individually in the run up to the elections they did so in a large empty office. I thought that was poignant, reflecting all the offices and work places across the country that were now empty thanks to the way the country had been run.
