| For some, its worked well, Cas Tigers, Leeds Rhinos, Bradford Bulls ect, Others it didnt work at all, Halifax Blue Sox, Hull Sharks ect.
Some of it was down to Marketing and Budgets as well as on field success.
Some clubs have made strange ways to add to the name, Leigh wanting fans to refer to Hilton Park as The Coliseum (probably due to its age and condition) was never going to work and they soon binned it. Or going back a number of Years, "Arena 84".

didn't the Leigh fans vote/protest to keep the Centurions name though?

Dont think the nickname is a bad thing, if its used right, the coliseum idea was ridiculous though, especially as there was talk of a new stadium at the time

| Quote ="reddan"If this has been discussed recently, I apologise, I couldn't see a relevant thread.
Basically all I want to know is how important or relevant you think the 'super league era' nicknames are eg. Rhinos, Giants etc. Do you think they're an important part of a club's 'brand', maybe help attract younger fans or would you rather see a return to the likes of Trinity, Northern etc?
Considering saints didn't bother, hull dropped theirs and two newish clubs (quins and celtic) have each taken a different option, what do you think about them in general, and in the context of your own club? Any thoughts appreciated.'"
I'm sure a "Hull FC" team played in the Hull & District league whilst the "Sharks" were going

| I don't have a major problem with them, however I prefer to see the 'nickname' as being relevant to the region of the club
For example - when the whole issue of the new Leeds brandname was being discussed, I would have preffered them to have considered the Leeds Rams or Leeds Owls. The Leeds coat of arms has a fleece and a couple of owls on it. Ok, so the fleece might be a sheep but its near enough. Although maybe Leeds Owls sounds a bit lame. Although they do have sharp beaks and are probably quite nasty.
At least Hull had a link to sharks in that Hull is next to the sea and sharks live in it. Leeds is a cold city in the middle of England, and Rhinos live in hot places like Africa. They don't have much in common.

Ive always known it as, Hull , R*vers and City as many do in the City.

| Modern nicknames only work well if the club are 100% committed to them, they choose a good one and they spend a lot of money marketing the name. Hence why Bulls, Rhinos etc have worked so well. Having said that I don't think us sticking with our traditional name and nickname has had any negative impcat, especially when you look at the amount of merchandise we sell.
Are Hull still the Airlie Birds or has that gone the way of the porpoise/shark?

| All this argument about appealing to the kids is ridiculous. If the only way your kid can engage with the fine sport of rugby league through the postering of some person in a mascot costume personifying a superficial brand, then good luck to the human species.
Personally, in the case of Wakefield. I think it's abhorrent the way they tainted one of the most famous and traditional names in British RL, and if we can't teach or at least convey the passion of tradition and heritage to our children, then forget it.
And to a degree, all this Wildcats, the Jungle, Warriors, etc... is probably insulting to most children. I know myself not being the brightest kid in the world would have been.

| What annoys me at Salford is the apparently deliberate attempt to distance the club from our original nickname of "The Red Devils". We almost appear to be ashamed of the name & are seemingly willing to let United run roughshod over us, the final straw being the removal of the Devil from the badge last year, a rebranding to Salford Red Devils would be hugely popular but will sadly never happen.

| I've nothing against Wildcats, Reds, Rhinos etc but I do object to clubs being renamed. Leeds should be Leeds, Warrington should be Warrinton etc. Trinity are slowly becoming Wakefield Wildcats which, in my opinion is just plain wrong. The nicknames should be just that - nicknames. They could stil be used as marketing tools but not as the actual club name.
Arsenal are known throughout the world as the Gunners but they're not "Arsenal Gunners".

| IMO teams such as Hull Kingston Rovers, St Helens, Bradford Northern, Wakefield Trinity never needed to change their names as they are very distinctive. However i can understand why a team just named after the town/city they play in would add a tag line to their name to make it more distinctive. Personally, the only one that works for me is Castleford Tigers.
