| And while we're worrying about Quins sustainability, when was the last time that two teams in SL appeared without a main sponsor on their jersey? That's a big chunk of money that Quins & Crusaders are doing without at the moment.

| So after reading all of this and not being at the game. Was this the figure given out on the PA or is this the figure plucked from the Press Association who had a crowd of 800 and odd at Hull KR last year.
I find it hard that the crowd is so low considering the amount of advertising in the Metro for this game and ticket offers.
Like others the stoop is not a 15 min journey from Waterloo. Its a good 30 - 40 mins. Plus getting to waterloo in the first. Would mean and journey of 1 hour 10mins for me. Its like an away day every week.

| Quote Quote ="KensalGreenRL"Been around the London area for about the past three years and watched Quins in that time, getting a season ticket both this year and last (though I was initally not going to renew this year after the pain of last season- a factor that I think may have had an impact on today's crowd).
As an ex-pat Northerner, I love Rugby League and I love having a team I can watch (nearly) on my door step. I've met other ex-pat northerners and curious RU fans (who suprisingly don't all wear top hats and quaff Champagne- and often either have a high level of respect for League or simply apathy/disinterest). I don't know why more people turn up- it's an endless debate that has no easy answer. The only tangible way crowds would increase was if the club had a major backer (like they did with Virgin) who could pay for a top flight team and proper marketing. '"
I can't imagine any sponsor however big and ready to 'buy' a team capable of competing seriously in the top four dramatically changing the size of the crowds in London - can't we just face it,London dosen't want top class RL ? - not at the moment anyway,so does it deserve to have it above the likes of Fev & Fax or the other heartland teams ?
Maybe what's needed is a period of consolidation in the Championship for the Quins which will allow the apparent development of the game in the southern counties to take shape and re apply for SL status when the game has reached greater levels of interest in the London area ?
Quote With the rise and rise of Union since it went professional, and the media presence of both their National game and the Guiness Premiership, I don't think that's going to happen. If the RFL put money into marketing the club to the South you might see results- but then again, I'm sure that won't make them very popular with the type of people who post on here.
'"
By all accounts the RFL is making great efforts to develop the game down south, hence the vast increase in RL participation at junior level at least. This will take time to bear fruit however,so maybe a few years spent developing a strong Championship side along with the Skolars is the answer ?
Quote To all those complaining- the current chairman will only keep us afloat for the next three/four years (from the current lot of liscences to the next one), so its ultimately do or die for the club over the next three years. We actually have a core home fanbase of around 1500-2000, which, let's face it, isn't that much lower than a team like Salford (who will obviously attract more away fans). If the team fail to achieve anything and still attract crowds around the 3000 av. level, it's doubtful that we would find new backers and the club would probably fold to the delight of the flatcappers. The sport would go back to being an M62 curiousity that once attempted to be viewed as a national game, but gave up the ghost.'"
As a non-flatcapper (tractor boy from down sarf !) it wouldn't delight me to see any club go to the wall whether they be north, south or wherever. What's important is the game as a whole.Sky tv will still have as many southern based viewers if Quins are in SL or not. They just want to present decent games to their customers.

| Why do a lot of Quins fans always moan about how long it takes to get there? Is it not similar for fans of all clubs? London has one if the biggest & longest tube networks on the planet and within 3 tubes you can likely get to anywhere on any line!

After five minutes, the players shirts were so muddy it would have been hard to tell who was sponsoring them anyway.
Anybody know how much it costs to be the main sponsor of an expansion club?

120 plus Crusaders fans made the journey, averaging a 400 miles plus round trip each, just a week after an expensive weekend in Cardiff. I'm sure a fair few of the eighty odd thousand who will be attending a certain match across the road next week will manage to use the public transport.

When I lived in the east end, a mate of mine was on a course for a fortnight at the National Athletics Centre in Crystal Palace, so he stayed at my flat. As the crow flies, it's about 7 miles away. To get there, he had to leave at 6am, walk to a DRL station, get a train across the river, get an overground train, then get two buses. It took over 2 and a half hours.
As he pointed out afterwards, he was doing a course in SE London so he stayed with a mate in east London - sounds simple, but in travel terms it was like doing a course in Coventry, and staying with a mate in Preston.
Which is a long way of saying: no, its not like it is for other clubs. London is not one city, it is 100 towns all bolted on to one another with no gaps in between. It took me 3 hours to drive to Quins from Exeter (180 miles). It would take about the same time to drive (through the middle) from Tottenham (at least on a work day... about 15 miles).

| The thing is though we aren't talking about the difference between 10,000 & 15,000 fans into attendance which is where you may say you can't call London one place... We are talking about less than 1800!

You'd have thought if he was at a course at the National Athletics Centre he should have just run the seven miles in less than an hour.
Having said that...Crystal Palace is in some sort of space vortex from the rest of London. It might as well be the moon.
You could explain travelling accross London to out-of-towners in terms of population not distance. If you're going from, say, Hackney to Twickenham, you pass through about 3 million people a few miles either side of your route, the equivalent of going from Hull to Warrington. Every game is an away game.

| why is it that when it suits Quins are important as they represent the millions of London, yet when it comes down to getting to games they claim they are all too far away and in reality their local popualtion is about the size of Cas! Which is it, big city team or outer suburb park side?

If I was an actual Londoner, why would I have any interest in a club called Harlequins? If it was called London, I might.
And who spouted the bull about Quins RL being 6 years old? As a name, maybe, or a new company, or whatever, but as the face of London RL, it is many years older than that, under it's different guises.
They are doing a lot for the amateur game, by all accounts, which might bear fruit in the long run, but attendances are going a long way backwards, and unlike a lot of the heartland teams, there probably isn't a lot of part-time support to tap into (ie, if a lot of the established clubs do well, there are a lot of people who will turn up again). They need to sort it out, because it would look like a defeat for the game if London failed, but how long do we keep trying for? It is more than 30 years since Quins first started, if you work on the assumption that Fulham was the original guise, and we are no further on, apart from the amateur game.
What about moving to somewhere where there isn't a big alternative sporting presence but an appetite for rugby league. The Crusaders move to Wrexham was a good one, away from union territory and into an area where there isn't much local alternative for sport. What town around London would suit that? Hemel Hempstead was often touted.

Unfortunately, it's attitudes like that, that are preventing more support coming through. I've heard people say they'll only support us if we go back to Broncos and blah, blah but if you're an RL fan then it shouldn't matter what we're called.
As for people complaining about our location, we couldn't be closer to central london if we tried! 15 mins away from Waterloo on the train, one of the biggest tourist attractions in London. As for a new home, where are we supposed to move to then? The only other option is Brentford, and the Stoop is a much better stadium.
Dissapointed that the sole focus seems to be on a crowd anounced lower than was, as it was a good win and we played some good stuff, there also seemed to be a lot of new comers where I usually sit too. However I suppose it's virtually impossible for us to not be criticized by some. If it's not our performances, it's always something else.

| Slugger- If you were from London and liked football would you be happy to follow Arsenal?
As bad as the crowds are we are not that far behind well established RL icons! such as Wakefiled, Salford etc
Lets see who gets kicked out next year Slugger- Enjoy your trips to Batley.
Its only correct clubs with bad finances are removed from the top tier of the game-how about that? Lets not focus on one aspect lets focus on the whole club management- goodnight

| TBh if I lived in London I wouldn't support a club that has jumped into bed with RU, wears a stupid looking kit and based itself in the heart of Union territory. Call me old fashioned but Union is and always be the enemy as far as I am concerned and any RL club that stoops so low (excuse the pun) as to become a pseudo RU club wouldn't get my hard earned.
