Tightest or not mugs? We got a twin room in Holiday Inn Central 2 years ago and I'm sure they charged us around £170 a night (if not more). That's a ing disgrace tbh. It's got nowt to do with being tight, it's about the principle of not having the p*ss out of you.
When you consider you can get 9 nights in Lloret (twin room) for little over £200 p/p in July, for anyone short of cash which trip is a better option? I like Newcastle, the ground is great for rugby league, there are some good boozers and some decent eye candy, but I refuse to accept you should be royally bummed by hoteliers charging obscene amounts for a one off event.

| Quote ="SaleSlim"So that's pretty much anywhere in London then!
Seriously tho.... have you seen hotel prices down there? Unless you're willing to travel a decent distance then you'll struggle to find a decent room under £100 a night. Air BnB is the way to go if there are a few of you as definite bargains to be had.
As for Newcastle, they're robbing barstewards in the city centre. Best bet is to head out to Whitley Bay or Sunderland as believe they're the far end of the metro and one lad with us a couple of years back got a BnB in Sunderland for £30 a night. Either that or look for an Air BnB on the met line a few stops outside the centre.'"
Clearly you have no idea what you're talking about. A very basic search of the first website I clicked on reveals 170 hotels/guesthouses under £85 for Saturday 19th May.

Can you straighten that out a bit I didn't grasp pretty much any of the first sentence, oh hang on you only wrote one sentence.
£125/night, we aren't talking about that price bracket so I'm not seeing what relevance that has to the discussion? Do some hotel rooms not meet expectation, absolutely, that happens, on the flip side some of the best rooms I've had and most friendly were also some of the least expensive.
20+ years ago I stayed in one of the most expensive hotels in Jersey (4th most expensive from what I could see of the rack rate), the restaurant and food were fantastic, the front of house opulent, staff lovely, but the budget rooms were very basic, clean but basic. Geographically it was perfectly located.
ATEOTD the poster saying you can't get anywhere for under a £100*night in London is ridiculously off the mark. If you're not fussy you can get a bed and a breakfast for £32 about 4 miles away/35mins by DLR from the Olympic stadium

Anfield would be a good shout. But the Etihad and Elland Road are too close IMO. Part of the experience for me is visiting a city I rarely do aka Newcastle. Goodison, however is just a bigger Belle Vue or Wheldon Road.

| Anfield would be a good shout as it has a large park for a fan zone next to it and Liverpool has a lot of hotels as its already a big tourist draw.
the big problem as always is a lack of local marketing though. The first Magic Weekend in Newcastle they seemed to put some effort in and we were told that 10k tickets had been sold to local residents...what has happened since then? you can't expect the local population to remember seeing an article 5 years ago about a sport they don't follow and just hope they turn up.
disappointingly they haven't even put the top tier on sale for the Saturday, i'm sure it was for other years with just a few weeks to go. The RFL seem happy to lazily just accept flat crowd numbers rather than try and fill the ground.

tellins to Newcastle is about 30 minutes less than direct to wembley by car, it's a damn sight longer by train than to the capital by around a couple of hours.
You can apply that to most of the West of the Pennines teams. Hull to KX by train is 2:40 give or take including a change at Donny if you don't get the Hull train straight through which is a bit quicker, to Newcastle it's at the very most 20 minutes quicker and still with a change.
Leeds is quicker to Newcastle by car by a bigger margin but by train it's less than 30 minutes difference.
You also forget it isn't London Broncos fans but Southern based fans, you know those fans that make up 40-45% of the tickets sold at the big events in London.

I remember being in Newcastle months before the rugby union World Cup and they had a big sign over the Tyne bridge advertising the world cup.
Would be great if rugby league could do something like that.

Please please please never at Elland Rd. It might be in a great location but as a stadium it's bloody awful. I'm 5 foot 1 and a peanut and even I couldn't sit straight when I went there for the WCF a few years ago. The people I was with were considerably taller and ended up standing on the concourse watching the game on the TV simply because they couldn't sit down. You are there for hours so comfortable seating is a must, something ER doesn't provide unfortunately.

| Can't see it being at Newcastle next year as they're hosting union European final in May 2019, I'm sure I read it's agreed there'll be no other event near the time. All points towards the Etihad again, especially with it being the home of RFL now.

| I think its an enjoyable concept, and also one of the major USP's of rugby league in this country. We should celebrate this and really promote it. We just don't seem to do much marketing around it, or anything for that matter.
Could and should be one of the main events for the year of sport in this country if done properly. I think the idea of the expansionist teams playing there as well is good, and i think it should be the 7th game every year. You could even go as far as 8 games, 6 SL concepts plus two teams from championship and 2 from league 1. See who the forward thinking teams are then wouldn't you.
Be good if York Vs Bradford was first game of day 2 for example, they attracted 4 thousand earlier in the year and im sure a similar number would go across. Factor in the support generated by the dual reg teams if they have one would add to the experience, and open up some SL eyes to the talent down the leagues.
I'd also love it if we ( KR ) stopped playing FC every year n all. I know a lot of tickets get sold across both teams but bejesus playing them every week is annoying, and a distinct unfair advantage compared to other games which ain't local derbies.

I agree it is fantastic for me, I have been to loads of them, although I never got to Scotland.
the only change i'd make (and it's a big one) is make it challenge cup quarter finals, having said that i'm going this year, if it's on next year i'll be going too, and if it's at the etihad i'll even bully some of my friends from the wrong side of the hills to come along again.
The Etihad has been my favourite venue, but I think it may have been due to very very very kind weather!

| Interesting to read that the NRL will be having a Magic Weekend in Brisbane next year.
Obvious difference to ours is they've gone for an RL hotbed rather than an expansion area though. But of course we don't have a large stadium in an RL hotbed. Elland Road is too old, Etihad is as close as you can get to the heartlands but of course Manchester is a football City.

I think Newcastle is ideal really. Though I’d like to see more concerted effort toward the Magic Weekend actively assisting and helping grow Newcastle Thunder. Otherwise what’s the point.
The entire event should be plastered with Newcastle marketing/advertising, presence of the Newcastle players, maybe Newcastle play during one of the days etc.
I’d also like to see a follow up England game put there.
We have good ideas in RL but rarely do we follow them up properly.
