there's only one possible winner this year. he plays golf and he's from northern ireland. there is a serious lack of back up nominees this year - or is it back to being a normal british year for sport after the riches of the last couple?

McIlroy is absolutely nailed on the win the main award. Not sure they'll get team of the year though. In Medina they were not favourites and won with one of the most memorable comebacks in any sport ever. This year they were strong favourites to win, and did so pretty comfortably. Not sure who will win though because there haven't been many stand out teams really. Yorkshire CCC? Team England at the commonwealths?

It would be nice to see Burgess on the short list, yes he's going to Union but he's still achieved what he has in league. He won't be nominated though.

Why does Sam deserve to be nominated more than Aaron Ramsay who was man of the match in the FA Cup Final. First realistic comparison I could think of

Mo Farrah is easily britain s best known sportsman at the moment and would should deserve the award, but the BBc will prefer to make sure a golfer gets the award over a proper athlete, especially a muslim one.

Rory McIlroy is every bit the athlete that Farrah is though, they just have different skill sets. If you don't play golf then it's hard to appreciate just what he does and how good he is. I guarantee he dedicates a lot more time to his training than Mo too.

Your comment about him being a Muslim is spot on though. Never mind the BBC, I don't think the general population would ever vote for a black muslim over a white man. I know Ali won the sportsman of the century but an a sporting icon he probably sits above anyone else there's ever been.

Quite how the BBC is supposed to recognise a player for SPOTY who conducts his business in a foreign domestic competition broadcast by a largely irrelevant subscription channel whose claim to fame (apart from broadcasting live NRL games which lag several seconds behind Bet365 internet feeds) is to show Belgian Soccer is anyone's guess.

Really can't see where you think McElroy is every bit the athlete farrah is. I' sure he practices very hard but not the same as a track athlete. That would be like compairing Phil Taylor with even a 70,s Steve pitchfork style prop forward. Golfers are not athletes.

McIlroy could never run 10,000 metres in 28 minutes, but Farrah could never swing a golf club at 125 mph either. In fact he could train and practice for the next 10 years and never get close. They are different kind of athletes, but they are both undoubtedly athletes, whose attributes are honed for their own sports.

Comparing it to darts is daft. A golf swing (a proper one) is an athletic movement, throwing a dart is not.

Obviously you don't like golf and don't regard it as a "proper" sport. I disagree but that's fair enough.

As for what has he done that's so special. Well he went to world number 1. He won back to back majors (only the 13th guy in history to do this) and a WGC. He also won the Ryder Cup.

Whether you like golf or not there's simply no one else who has achieved anything close to that this year.

Good job it's Sports Personality of the year then & not Athlete of the year. People running round a track is crap & boring & it amazes me how that is classed as a sport.
