On the one hand I agree, it must be hell. On the other, all players of all teams know what the score is regarding the middle eights and the possibility of relegation.

I don't think he's critisising the concept of promotion and relegation. He's critising a concept whereby 17 men have their, their team-mates and many more people's jobs on the line in one 80 minute televised event that has been created for 'entertainment'.
I didn't enjoy watching the match this year when my team wasn't in it. I won't enjoy watching it with my team in it. I won't be celebrating if we win either.

| Every team knew the score going into the season. If he didn't want to play in the game he should have played better and helped his team avoid it.
If you don't do so well in your job, you risk losing it. Why should it be any different for the players? It is a great opportunity for these guys, if you play well and win all is well, if you put on a performance and lose, another team might look at picking you up. If you are not worth the money you are being paid, and get a contract offer of less money with the relegated team, then you only have yourself to blame.
However, this all goes back to the failure of the players to have a strong players union. They could have negotiated some form of parachute payment for their contracts (such as being guaranteed the value of their contract for 1 year after relegation). They could also fight against the rising number of games, and lack of growth in the salary cap. But hey, what do I know. Just complain about all these issues when they happen to you, rather than proactively going out and looking for solution before they happen to anyone!

| Promotion and relegation has been a part of sport for decades.
Unfortunately we are a sport which may not have enough funding for clubs to stay full time if they get relegated, but it comes with the territory, if we (Hudds) had dropped I'd expect our better, higher paid players to find contracts elsewhere, the lower paid players would generally remain employed in the lower league.
I don't think that the world would end and everyone would be down at the job centre on Monday morning.
The implications however, could be bigger for Salford and their temperamental owner.

I sympathise with anyone losing their job but it happens everyday in countless other industries, sportsmen are not immune to it.'"
What about the non playing staff at these clubs. Must be horrible for them knowing that relegation could see them lose their jobs.

I'm not sure what is meant by non playing staff.Surely the plight of any relegated side is to get back in contention asap, losing non playing staff won't assist that goal.
Yes central funding will be less and thats a good excuse to get rid of somebody. Manual investment is required to get back to top filght, not sacking everyman and his dog.The question is who is willing to make that investment?

Typically any team trying to get back into SL will look to invest as much of their money in the playing side as they can/want (two very different things I suppose).
To that end they will look to try and trim their budgets elsewhere so it's the non-playing staff that face the axe. Marketing and social media people, office and admin workers, community staff etc. People that remain will be asked to pick up this or that bit of the job that so and so used to do.

But that's true of every league in every sport where relegation happens. It's just the nature of sport. Teams get relegated, players have contracts slashed, club staff lose their jobs, some clubs go under, but it happens all over the place. That's sport!

Don't contracts become null and void for players if relegated. Is there other sports that do this to the playing staff?

| For me you have to look at who offers the most to SL.
Unfortunately fans just don't want to turn up even when Marwan took over and brought in some better players (at that time, even if it didn't work out it was a statement that he was willing to invest in the club).
KR have a good following both home and away, their stadium is improving and for the Hull fans the derby game brings in more money and exposure.

| KR brought nothing to the LSV last season, granted the CC was priorty. But then again find themselves in the middle 8's this season.Salford's team by default shouldn't have been there this season.A cat only has so many lives regardless of Derbies. Not a case of what you bring to SL,its were you finish,is it not?
The bells rang out to replace Wakey last season, they learn't their lesson, some haven't.

| No one was piping up about mortgages when it looked like Wakefield were going down last year...
Ben Cockayne should put a sock in it, as all other players complaining. They knew the score since the start of last season. And ATEOTD, these players have been lucky to have their hobby as their job. RL is a relatively short career anyway playing wise.

| Now Webster has weighed in with his views on the 'concept'. After Peacocks view that money should not go to the Championship clubs, and Cockaynes foot stamping about the new concept. Webster pipes up with the implication that promoting someone from the Championship weakens Super League. A bit of info for you Mr Webster, both teams in the MPG were beaten by the club going up who will strengthen prior to next season. Also HKR have been beaten by 2, yes 2 Championship teams this season (Oldham the other) and Salford have been beaten by 2 also (London the other). So I actually fail to see how it can be said promotion of a Champ club weakens SL.

Oh come on, there was this sort of talk last year. Perhaps not hitting it on the nose, but there was the same sort of grumbling flying around from over your end. Wakefield are just incredibly lucky that they didn't croak out at the end of last season like they did this year.

Not quite mass hysteria but I clearly remember Nick Scruton & possibly Scott Moore mentioning mortgages....now whether this was before or after the final whistle I can't remember.
