| I have worked in the finance market for many years now and have come accross provident many many times, Is it a lender i would choose to borrow from ?. NO !!!, Why ??. becuase i am able to borrow from a high street lender at a cheap rate, This is becuase i have been lucky enough to pay all my bills and keep my credit rating clean, Some people, through no fault of their own ( redundancy, illness etc) are not, this effects the risks they pose to potential future lenders, Provident and some others, greenwoods etc fill this gap in the market, Lets not pretend they lend £1000's of pounds at a time as most of the time they lend £500 or less and i would say 75% or more of their customers are people who are on limited income from benefits, We all know the price of pretty much everything has increased, and that most decent parents wouldn't see their kids go without, Provident provide credit for school uniforms, christmas, birthdays, washers & dryers etc. Yes they are not cheap but they charge the rates due to the risk the customers pose, With bankrupcy only lasting maximum of 12 months before being discharged and the CAB doing debt management plans for free where they only pay £1 per week its no wonder they have to charge these rates to cover the risks. It is not the company that is bad, Its the potential front line sales people who only see the commision coming to them. There are always other options in every town or city for example credit unions, Non profit making organisations who can only help financially excluded people within the boundies of their council to ensure the money made is put straigh back into the local communities, the problem is they do not have marketing budgets to let people know, the ones that do use credit unions NEVER return to sub prime lenders again, i worked for one for 3 years and doorstep lenders would be paid off 7 times out of 10, Only a small majority had bad words to say about them as they were helped when they needed it financially.
see the ABCUL website for credit unions in your area.
Well done Provident for supporting Bradford Bulls.

Well, obviously not, as they would soon be out of business.
Quote ="frank5613",like the collector's said once we have them we don't let them go,'"
No, like one remark by one collector in one instance out of millions of transactions.
Quote ="frank5613" thank god there is plenty of poverty struck people in England to exploit,'"
You'll have to explain that. Provident have done business with millions of customers over many years. Are you saying that every one of these people was exploited? How do you know? Who gave you access to the data and how did you reach this conclusion? Should all have been protected by you by preventing them from dealing with Provident? Isn't that a bit megalomaniac?
Do you even know what Provident does as a business?
If those who felt they needed to borrow money from Provident had been prevented by you from doing so, what alternative would you have offered them?

I too have worked with poor and vulnerable people.
I don't like what these companies do, I doubt many people on here do. But this company is better than going to a loan shark (I have met people who have been affected by this, and believe me, these companies are needed so that people never ever go down that route) which is probably why they are choosing to do it. The better way is for advice against going to companies like provident. I understand that desperate people do desperate things, and some nasty clever bugger at the top of provident knows this alot better than me. But ATEOTD, nothing illegal is happening, people still have the choice and this company has put some serious money into Rugby League, at a time where the game really needs it, especially us.
Btw, I see you really hate the vulnerable being preyed on. Do you think Kopzcak will do well for you this season?
Please note the wink, I'm not actually likening that to people in these dreadful situations
I was once in a field of sheep, but they chased after me. If I get the opportunity again I will wear a thick white wooly coat and try to blend in. If I do manage to follow them I'll try to observe their activity and report back to you. If you improve your knowledge of sheep behaviour, as I'm sure you are keen to do, then you may be able to one day practice this yourself. It's actually quite exciting to meet another enthusiast of sheep behavioural analysis. Would you have any interest in forming a group or society?

| Quote ="Ewwenorfolk"I was once in a field of sheep, but they chased after me.'"
I got chased off the top of Buckden Pike one Easter, in thick fog, by a flock of very beligerent herdwicks. And a scary experience it was too!
That was just after Pink Floyd had released "Animals", and I reckon the farmer had been playing "Sheep" to them a month or so earlier when they were down in the lambing shed... I had "bleating and babbling we fell on his neck with a scream" ringing in my ears until I finally vaulted the stile. Then remembered I had left my rucksack against the wall at the other side of the field...
And there may JUST be the odd idealist posting on these threads who would indeed behave no differently if it was HIS club involved. Somewhere. No, really... But I think most of us have a pretty good idea just how the tune of the others would change, as if by magic once they had mysteriously ascertained the true facts, if it was? Four legs good, two legs better, wot?
Good on the likes of Father Ted and Faxhali and Wheels and others who are prepared to be objective.

So now we have established you are a Cas fan, can we assume that you and your family boycotted all Castleford games last season due to their sponsor's questionable business ethics? Or are we seeing a classic case of double standards here?

An insolvency professional body released an article on "payday" loans and their popularity which reminded me of this thread.
Source R3 - Association of Business Recovery Professionals - www.r3.org.uk/index.cfm?page=111 ... fpage=1008
[i5 million British adults considering taking out a payday loan in the next six months
– One in four (26%) of 18-24 year olds likely to seek a payday loan
– 13% of GB adults have prioritised paying back these loans over essentials such as food
Since this time a year ago, there has been approximately a 50% increase on the number of GB adults who say they are likely to seek a payday loan in the next six months, up from 3.5 million individuals to 5 million today. The payday loan can no longer be regarded as a niche form of credit.[/i
Therefore, like it or not, Provident provide an essential product and get well remunerated for it. If they didn't do it then someone else would and it is a competitive (and regulated) market at the end of the day. There are plenty of other companies out there that i don't particularly like or intend to have anything to do with personally but i think it is a bit hypocritical to criticise the Bulls for their sponsorship deal.
