| Careful, if your a "character" you won't last long in the GB set up, a set up that needs a few mongrels. Personally I think Lee Briers brightens up the telly, especially when interviewed.

Goldy could so easily be the ideal 'character' for superleague.... but he isn't very good at footy.
Ideally these 'characters' (as well as being larrikin types) I have previously mentioned have also been pretty good at their sports.

| Kevin Sinfield once made some toast and left crumbs in the butter then drove through a set of temporary lights at night whilst they were turning red.

| Quote ="Barry_McKenzie"Reading a thread all about the late great Alex 'Hurricane' Higgins over on the SinBin got me thinking.
Have we got any real 'characters' playing Rugby League these days?
Alex Higgins was probably the only bloke that could make a snoreathon 'sport' like snooker (whereby the aim is to hit a few coloured balls down holes on a table using a stick) interesting. Alex would think nothing of smashing all the balls down in record time whilst drinking beer, smoking like a train and relieving himself into one of the plant displays before being seen later staggering out of a nightclub at 3am with a couple of women on each arm.
Legend.
We have recently had people like Julian 'Poo in the shoe' O'Neill and Craig Gower throwing up some mildly amusing off field incidents......and of course Willie Mason and SBW... but thats about it. Even that selection look like boy scouts compared to past players like John 'Dallas' Donnelly' and Tommy Raudonikis.
All we seem to have these days are blokes like Kevin Sinfield... a man so boring he could send a glass eye to sleep.
Yes... I accept the game has become more professional.
But surely there must be some 'characters' left in our game???

I know what you're saying Barry, if only there was a Timmy Street-type in the game these days.

| Have a look at the Ryan Bailey threads. Seems to be a bit of mass delusion going on but apparently lots of fans hate him.

| It shouldnt be someone who everyone genuinely HATES... I'm thinking more of someone you secretly admire for being a great football player despite the fact you outwardly call him a tool.
Someone sort of along the lines of Andrew Johns... but with a bit of personaility.

I wouldn`t argue with that, you certainly can`t call him boring.
Briers,gobby but entertaining.
Rob Burrow,if only for him trying to lay out Lauaki.

Bonkers maybe.
Brilliant player?
I think not.
I was watching some soccer on telly the other day (Derby v Leeds?) and they interviewed Robbie Savage after the game. He is the sort of bloke I'm on about. They were booing him throughout the game but he loved it. And after the game in the post match interview he said he was off to do a phone in for radio 5 live and asked people to 'Bring it on'
Thats the kind of bloke we need in RL

I think that Russell Crowe would make a great Sean Long. Time to covert Longys interesting book into a film anyone?
