| So have Widnes failed to put out a side (no matter how uncompetitive) in any season (barring the war years maybe) since 1895?

You mean apart from the day after the 2007 grand final?
Whatever sins those in charge of Crusaders may have committed (and they seem to be many) they've not closed the club down, making all players and other staff redundant, the day after the season ended because they weren't successful enough.
If Widnes RLFC est 1895 is the current club, then that failure (six months before the licence applications) is a key part of their history. If you want to claim that Steve O'Connor's Widnes is separate from that failure, then you've got a club with a history that only goes back to early 2008. You can't have it both ways.

I now have strong suspicisions that Richard Lewis is amongst us. We know all of the above, don't worry this is the general feeling at Widnes.

I wasn't having a go at the general population of Widnes, or even Widnes fans. Just responding specifically to Redchemic.
fwiw, I'm heartened by and applaud the way the club has bounced back from October 2007. More strength to your elbow.

In response to the above, (and Smokey, Wadski et al) I know and fully understand that there have been new businesses formed to administer and run the club but for all intents and purposes it is the same Rugby League club.
The sport has not failed but the business has. However, I and many others fully believe that there will always be a Rugby Club in Widnes whatever happens to the club [iadministration[/i (suspect word to use in this instance)!!!

Simple question , how many times in it's 100 odd year history has Widnes gone into administration ?

We've only been in administration once.
We did move from being a members club to being a PLC with a board of directors and owners, instead of a committee voted in by club members. This is similar to what happened with the South Sydney Rabbitohs when Russell Crow took over.
The old set-up was no longer workable, but it was saved by the change. No administrator was involved in the process.

Once every 50 years or so. It's good to clear the decks every half century .
As to the other question of moving grounds, read this from the official site/ history section;
The early years
'The club was formed in 1873, under the name of Farnworth & Appleton. The name Widnes was adopted in 1876. The club adopted the nickname "Chemics" in 1888, after previously being known as the "Chemicals". The club played at a number of grounds before moving to the present site at Lowerhouse Lane in 1895.
In 1895, Widnes were founder members of the Northern Union which broke away from the rugby union to create the sport of rugby league. The first game was an away fixture at Canal Street, Runcorn which was lost 15-4.
During the early years, the club often struggled financially and often had to sell players to balance the books. The strength of junior rugby league in the area meant the club had a steady stream of local talent to offset the losses.'
Source - www.widnesvikings.co.uk/history.html
As you'll gather there were problems in the early days too but there has always been a collective will to see the game continue here.
I seem to recall reading that in the earliest days the ground was in the town centre just behind the main street (Albert Road) close to where the Wetherspoon Pub is now. Another site mentioned was up on Peelhouse Lane which is practically a stones throw from Wetherspoons but these were as a Rugby Union club.
The original Rugby club was formed by some members of the Widnes Cricket Club just around the corner from my gaff in Farnworth. Unsure if any Rugby was played on the oval in the cricket off season though.
We have been at the current site since the inception of the Northern Union in 1895.

The rugby club was formed in the autumn of 1875 as it happens. And the F&A cricket club folded in that off-season so they never had to share the ground as such.
First ground was behind where 'Spoons is now.
Then to a site where the Library now stands, then Peelhouse (just north of Millfield) then Widnes CC on Lowerhouse (behind the north stand of the current rugby stadium)
Then back to Peelhouse/Millfield, then back to Lowerhouse on the far side of Widnes CC (Squires Avenue area) in 1884 for 11 years. The first couple of NU games were played there in 1895 and the current site was christened with a game against Liversedge, 12 October 1895 and so is the third site the club has used on Lowerhouse Lane (or the fourth if you count the 3rd XV pitch on the Stewards Ave side of the road that was used briefly in the 1880s).
